Learners’ dictionaries are often intended to assist students with distinct proficiency levels. However, few studies have shown how dictionaries with different intended users were compared. This paper aimed to compare and contrast adjective clauses in -er suffix occupation definitions in two online dictionaries. Data, consisting of 33 occupation words with the suffix -er, such as ‘barber’ and ‘waiter’, were collected from the online Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE) and the online Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD) using purposive sampling. The data were analysed using syntactic analysis, focusing on the components of adjective clauses. The results showed the head noun of the adjective clauses differed; LDOCE used pronouns most frequently (80.6%), while OALD used noun phrases only (100%). The relative pronoun ‘who’ was used more frequently in LDOCE (48.4%) and ‘whose’ in OALD (62.5%). Transitive verbs were used the most in LDOCE (48.4%), but in OALD, it was linking verbs (57.9%). The additional information that affected the length of the adjective clauses was longer in OALD compared to LDOCE. The study results provide pedagogical implications for English learning-teaching by utilizing online dictionaries. English teachers and learners are encouraged to integrate dictionaries into the learning-teaching activities.

The ability to use discourse markers (DMs) to create cohesion and coherence of a text is essential for EFL learners at the university level to express ideas and thoughts in various types of writing assignments, such as academic papers and reflections. Hence, this study attempted to shed more light on the use of DMs in academic and non-academic writings of Thai EFL learners. The main objective was to investigate the types, overall frequency, and differences, and similarities of discourse markers in both styles of writing. Sixty essays, consisting of 20 academic essays and 40 non-academic ones, were selected as the primary data. Academic essays were selected from the Critical Reading and Writing course of Xavier Learning Community (XLC), Thailand, while the non-academic ones were selected from the XLC English Newsletter. The data were analyzed based on Fraser’s taxonomy (2009). The results showed that 2.521 DMs distributed in five types, namely contrastive discourse, elaborative discourse, inferential discourse, temporal discourse, and spoken discourse markers, were identified in the 20 academic and 40 non-academic essays. The most frequently used DM was elaborative discourse markers (EDM), F=1,703. This study concluded that raising awareness of DMs would assist Thai EFL learners in producing an effective and coherent piece of writing.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the grammatical equivalence in the Indonesian translation of Robert Galbraith’s novel, The Cuckoo’s Calling. The translated version is titled Dekut Burung Kukuk, translated by Siska Yuanita. The theory used in this research is the translation theory by Baker (2018) where five grammatical categories were analyzed, namely, number, gender, person, tense and aspect, and voice. This is a qualitative study as it was conducted by analyzing the text of the books and comparing the source and target language. The results show that the Indonesian translation of ‘The Cuckoo’s Calling’ was mostly grammatically equivalent, meaning that all five grammatical categories appeared in the Indonesian version and were well adjusted. Some necessary changes were made due to the different natures of both languages and to improve the translation quality and clarity.

The paper investigated common grammatical errors produced by Indonesian university students of English as a foreign language when writing their undergraduate research proposals. Accordingly, an urgent research question to resolve was what common grammatical errors are made by the seventh semester students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University in writing Chapter One of their research proposals? To answer the research question, the researchers conducted a content analysis. The researchers analysed students’ research proposals, focusing on grammatical issues identified in the first chapter. Results showed that the errors were omission (content and grammatical morpheme), addition (double marking, regularization, and simple addition), misinformation (regularization errors, archi-forms, and alternating forms), misordering, parallelism and diction. The top three errors were successively omission (38.15 per cent), addition (21.97 per cent) and parallelism (18.5 per cent).

The development of language affects speech cultures and modes of communication. Politer terms were created to avoid misunderstanding. This phenomenon is called euphemism. Employing euphemisms while discussing sensitive topics can help people express their ideas politely. This present study aims to determine the types of euphemism used in a famous television series entitled Bridgerton. The research was conducted only on the first episode of the series. This qualitative research employed content analysis as the research methodology. The research findings showed six types of euphemism identified, namely substitution, litotes, metonym, hyperbole, synecdoche, and colour-based metaphor for x-phemism. Nevertheless, this research was only analyzing the first episode of the series. Hence, the results might have differed in other episodes. Future researchers who are interested in the same topic may find other types of euphemisms that this research cannot cover.

This paper investigated some factors influencing the use of code-switching in foreign/second language learning processes. Code-switching is related to the shift between the first and second languages done by the speakers in conversational contexts. Based on the theories of code-switching, second language learners frequently apply their first language when communicating with others in order to deliver the messages clearly, maintain group solidarity, and avoid unintended misunderstandings. Data were collected through a classroom survey and interviews with 12 English Education Master’s Program students of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Qualitative content analysis was applied to obtain clearer interpretations. The results showed the lecturers and students utilized code-switching more sensibly in the second language classroom context. Further, code-switching will be better to be implemented in informal social interactions rather than foreign/second language classroom settings since it will hamper EFL learners’ success in attaining more fruitful target language competencies.

Grammar is a crucial element in communication, especially in a second language, and without the organization of grammar, language exchange is intruded. This paper explored grammatical issues in students’ reflective writing. Data were collected from reflective writing products of a number of students belonging to a class of the English Education Master’s Program of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The collected data were analyzed to examine grammatical issues encountered by the students using Dulay, Burt, and Krashen’s (1982) surface strategy taxonomy, which covers omission, addition, misinformation, and misordering errors. Results showed there existed 41 errors in total and were distributed in the following categories: 23 errors of others (other types), six omission errors, five addition errors, four misinformation errors, and three misordering errors. It is expected that the findings can assist learners in overcoming grammatical issues so that they can improve their English grammar and writing skills.

A number of studies have shown that morphological awareness contributes to the improvement of the comprehension of student reading and vocabulary learning, interest in the importance of language acquisition and instruction of morphological awareness is increasing. This research emphasizes the use of morphological techniques used in reading comprehension to enhance the vocabulary awareness of prefixes and suffixes of students and to contribute to the development of vocabulary acquisition. This literature review was conducted to incorporate research results to assess whether such training led to increased understanding of reading and development of vocabulary. First, researchers need to collect relevant information related to morphological and teaching strategies in the teaching and learning process of English. Second, researchers can analyze data regarding the advantages and disadvantages of morphological strategies and instructions in the English teaching and learning process. Third, researchers identified the important role of morphological awareness that has been applied by students and the need to implement morphological strategies to help second language learners to acquire English language skills. Finally, learners can conclude some important things related to the application of morphology learning strategies to engage the teaching and learning process so that learners can achieve learning objectives regularly.

This article investigates the suffix –ing in The Book of Romans of The Holy Bible. This research belongs to a qualitative content with the use of descriptive design and distributional method to analyse gerunds, prepositions, and present participles as well as their functions as nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. The idea behind the distributional method is to identify morphemes through the distribution in various phrases or sentences. In this case, the data collected in this research was from The Holy Bible, specifically from The Book of Romans (Authorized King James Version) which contained 16 chapters. The Book of Romans consisted of various letters or epistles, written by the apostle Paul to the Christian church in Rome and aimed to give them direction, reassurance, and guidance. The results show that in a total of 115 words that the researchers found, 41 or 30% of them are gerunds functioning as nouns, 74 or 53% are present participles with 40 verbs, 3 adverbs, and 7 adjectives, as well as 24 or 17% prepositions.
