Abstract

Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) can help reduce poverty by offering small loans to people who cannot get bank loans due to lack of collateral. However, in Indonesia, access to microfinance institutions is unequally distributed, as shown by the establishment of MFIs in Indonesia, which covers only 22 out of 34 provinces. This condition limits their impact on poverty reduction. This study examines how access to MFIs and the loans they provide affect poverty rates in Indonesia, using cross-sectional data from 22 provinces between 2016 and 2022. The results show that access to MFIs and the loans they provide do not significantly reduce poverty. This is due to poor infrastructure, low-quality MFI services, and insufficient loan amounts. The study also found that education lowers poverty, unemployment increases it, and agriculture helps reduce it. To improve poverty reduction, the government should improve infrastructure and extend MFI coverage to more provinces. Additionally, MFIs should increase their loan amounts to make a bigger impact.

Abstract

This study explores the economic, educational, and infrastructural challenges in Srigonco Village, Bantur District, Malang Regency, Indonesia. The village's dependence on agriculture makes it economically vulnerable, while limited educational opportunities and inadequate infrastructure further hinder development. The study emphasises the critical role of financial literacy in empowering residents to make informed financial decisions and better utilise financial services. By implementing Training of Trainers (ToT) programs, the village can enhance financial management skills and promote economic resilience. Improved financial literacy is expected to lead to increased asset ownership, participation in productive activities, and long-term economic stability, ultimately improving the quality of life for the community.

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of younger workers towards older workers in Srigonco Village, Malang Regency, Indonesia, amid a demographic shift characterised by a growing aging population. The research examines factors influencing older workers' re-entry into the labour market and the retirement preparedness of younger workers. Findings indicate a dual perception: while many younger workers value older employees for their experience and agricultural knowledge, they simultaneously express concerns about older workers' adaptability to new technologies and physical limitations. Specifically, 62.5% of respondents recognise that financial necessity drives many older workers to remain in the workforce, highlighting significant economic challenges. Moreover, 53.13% agree that older workers face discrimination and biases, which can hinder their employment opportunities. This research underscores the urgent need for inclusive labour market policies that accommodate the unique challenges faced by older workers while fostering collaboration between generations. Despite limitations in sample diversity and potential biases in self-reported data, the study emphasises the importance of intergenerational knowledge transfer for economic sustainability. Future research should adopt longitudinal and qualitative methods to gain deeper insights into the evolving dynamics between older and younger workers, focusing on effective policy interventions to improve employment outcomes for all age groups.

Abstract

Households need to have certain characteristics related to the ideal household size and educational attainment that allow them to accumulate wealth as a financial buffer for a period of low income. Investigation to discover those characteristics should be aimed at household classes as different classes may show various responses to the change of factors, hence, this also implies government’s interventions should be carefully aimed at different classes. In this paper, I use a quantile regression approach to measure the impact of household size and educational level on household net wealth in Indonesia. The findings show the positive and significant effect of the variable of household size in low deciles but a negative and significant effect in high deciles while the education aspect has a positive and significant effect on household net wealth with a stronger effect found in higher deciles.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of social media services on business turnover of MSMEs in Balikpapan City, with the mediating variable of customer engagement. This study uses quantitative approach with cross-sectional design and path analysis method. The research population includes MSMEs in the food and beverage sector in Balikpapan, with a total sample of 258 MSMEs taken randomly. Data collection was conducted through a Likert scale-based questionnaire, and data analysis technique using path analysis. The results show that social media services have a significant influence on customer engagement and business turnover of MSMEs. In addition, customer engagement significantly mediates the effect of social media services on turnover. This means that the use of social media can increase customer engagement which leads to an increase in business turnover. The significance of value in the Sobel test shows that the mediating effect of customer engagement in this relationship is quite strong. The conclusion from this study is that customer engagement plays an important role in strengthening the impact of social media services on MSME business performance. Thus, MSMEs in Balikpapan are suggested to utilize social media more interactively in order to increase customer engagement, which in turn will lead to increased business turnover.

Abstract

Sustainable agricultural management is very important in facing climate change and natural resource degradation. Carbon footprint as a carbon emission measurement tool can help reduce the environmental impact of farming activities, especially in greenhouse management. This study aims to develop a carbon footprint-based smart eco-retail model to build sustainable greenhouse management while developing agricultural skills for inmates at Ngajum Malang Prison. Smart eco retail is a retail concept that integrates digital technology with environmentally friendly principles to support efficient and sustainable distribution of agricultural products. This model prioritizes carbon footprint measurement and management as an effort to reduce carbon emissions throughout the production and distribution chain. In addition to environmental aspects, this model also focuses on empowering inmates through modern agricultural skills training that supports the principle of sustainability. The research method uses a Research and Development (R&D) approach with stages of needs analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation at Ngajum Prison. Training and implementation of the model involved the active participation of inmates as the main subjects. The results of the study indicate that carbon footprint-based smart eco retail can create more environmentally friendly and efficient greenhouse management. Inmates have succeeded in improving agricultural skills integrated with green technology. This model provides dual benefits, namely improving the quality of farm products and social empowerment of residents. The study recommends the development of a broader model with the integration of more advanced digital technology to optimize greenhouse management in various institutions.

Abstract

Padusan Village, located in the Mojokerto district, has been identified as having significant potential for beetroot processing. In response to this opportunity, a community service team embarked on a project to empower local women by providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to produce a variety of beetroot-based processed products. These products included beetroot tepung, crackers, cheese sticks, and wedang wuluh drinks. Throughout the initiative, the women were closely supported by students specializing in catering, who guided them through each step of the production process, from familiarizing them with the ingredients to mastering the art of dough preparation. They demonstrated remarkable progress in their understanding of food processing techniques and showed enthusiasm in exploring the diverse culinary possibilities offered by beetroot. Looking ahead, future community service endeavors aim to further empower these women by facilitating the transition to large-scale production and providing assistance in developing effective marketing strategies. By leveraging their newfound skills and tapping into potential market demand, the women of Padusan Village can enhance their economic prospects and contribute to the growth and prosperity of their community.

Abstract

Bandar Kidul Ikat Weaving Tourism Village in Kediri is one of the areas with quality traditional weaving products that have high cultural value in Kediri. Although Pokdarwis has been formed to develop tourism, there are still challenges. This study aims to analyze the implementation of strategies by Pokdarwis and design a new strategy based on community development to increase the income of local communities. The research approach used mixed methods with SWOT analysis to identify internal and external conditions, and QSPM to determine priority strategies. The results showed that the current strategy implemented by Pokdarwis as the tourism manager is still not optimal due to obstacles. The SWOT analysis identified that the main strengths of Bandar Kidul Ikat Weaving Tourism are high product quality and unique motifs. However, weaknesses such as limited capital, less effective marketing, and lack of artisan regeneration pose significant challenges. The QSPM results state that, the main recommended strategy is one of the WO (weakness-opportunity) strategies with the highest TAS (Total Attractiveness) score of 8.645. The strategy involves and collaborates with several parties to increase public awareness of the value of weaving art, improve promoting ikat weaving, and expand the market.
