Abstract

The performance and characterization of biodegradable plastic from tapioca starch was studied. Modified the chitosan was one of the ingredients for produce the biodegradable plastics. The produced biodegradable polastic were thin sheet plastic, elastic and transparent. The biodegradable plastic performance had tensile strength between 2,26-3.73 Mpa, elongation ranges from 17.24 to 76.76%, and water absorption ranges from 30.81-268.9%. In antioxidant analyze, apples are wrapped in plastic and had significant mechanical properties changes on 8th day.Morphology scanning result showed that in the chitosan-polyNIPAM there were no cavities may caused high hydrophilicity in the biodegradable plastic.

Abstract

The use of biofoam is one of the ways to reduce plastic waste that pollutes the environment. In this research, we want to develop biofoam from sago starch as a basic ingredient with the addition of corn husk fiber filler and the addition of magnesium stearate which aims to improve mechanical characteristics, thermal, morphological, water absorption and biodegradabillity. Variations of corn husk fiber used were 45 g, 50 g, 55 g and 60 g, with variations in the concentration of NaOH solvent used for cellulose extraction were 3%, 5%, 7% and 9%. The mechanical characteristics (tensile strength) of the resulting biofoam range from 1.37 – 2.45 MPa. The chemical bonding of biofoam was seen through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and showed that biofoam is hydrophilic which binds to water so that it is easily degraded by soil. Thermal characteristics were tested through Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and showed a melting point of 410.68oC at 45 g of fiber and 5% NaOH and a melting point of 410.86oC at 55 g fiber and 5% NaOH. Thermal stability was analyzed through Thermal Gravimetry Analysis (TGA) and the most thermally stable biofoam was biofoam with 45 g of corn husk fiber and 5% NaOH. The surface morphology test using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) showed that the morphological structure of the corn husk fiber biofoam was uneven and there were bubbles on the surface of the biofoam. The water absorption test shows results between 5.72 – 14.43%. The lowest density test for biofoam is using 55 g fiber weight and 3% NaOH concentration, while the highest density is 60 g fiber weight and 9% NaOH concentration. The results of the biodegradability test showed that the biofoam decomposes completely within 40-45 days, the soil moisture factor greatly affects the rate of biodegradability.

Abstract

Degradable plastics may be employed as a substitute for conventional plastics in various commercial applications. Plastics made from starch and PVA-g-MAH are biodegradable. This research uses sago and jackfruit starch, a maleic anhydride compatibilizer, and PVA to make degradable plastics stronger. The research method consists of several stages, making sago starch and jackfruit seed starch, preparing degradable plastic synthesis, and testing the resulting degradable plastic. The test of mechanical characteristics of degradable plastics carried out is the tensile strength test of 4.41 Mpa - 6.02 MPa on sago starch-based degradable plastic with PVA-g-MAH, while the tensile strength of 6.86 - 8.43 MPa on jackfruit seed starch-based degradable plastic with PVA-g-MAH. The test shows that the compound is hydrophilic, meaning it binds to water and is easily degraded by soil. The DSC thermogram shows that the plastic samples degrade when heated, both thermogram peaks occur which indicate physical changes. The swelling value obtained in sago starch degradable plastic with PVA-g-MAH is (28.14-72.17%) while in jackfruit seed starch degradable plastic, the swelling obtained ranges from (25.91-84.72%) showing a good result. Sago starch and jackfruit seed starch degradable plastics degraded in 6-18 days using PVA-g-MAH. Sago starch and jackfruit seed starch-based plastics using PVA-g-MA meet the ASTM 6400 standard for biodegradable plastics. The plastic should be able to biodegrade up to 60% within six months or 90% within one year.

Abstract

The regency of Aceh Besar often experiences environmental issues. Environmental awareness has become a serious matter that needs to be cultivated through character education from an early age through the learning process. Based on this, this community service initiative collaborates with 5 Kindergartens (TK) in Aceh Besar using a observational study. In this regard, the partner's problem lies in the lack of representative learning media to develop environmental awareness in children. This community service aims to educate children about the value of environmental awareness, which will affect their present and future social lives. Therefore, this community service project designs, produces, and distributes educational products through Educational Play Tools (EPT), such as flashcards and coloring books, as media for environmental awareness education.

Abstract

Kueh Village, located in Aceh Besar District, is one of the centers of rattan handicrafts. However, the rattan production process in this village generates unmanaged solid and liquid waste, resulting in environmental pollution. This community service program aims to improve artisans' awareness and skills in waste management through the application of the Eco-Design concept. The implementation methods included socialization, training on waste processing, and the provision of supporting production equipment. The results showed that artisans successfully processed solid waste into new value-added products such as souvenirs, while liquid waste was minimized through safe storage and environmentally friendly dye alternatives. This program demonstrated a positive impact on artisan knowledge, environmental sustainability, and local economic enhancement.
