Abstract

This article delved into the interplay between hadiths related to rahn (pledge or collateral) and the prophetic maqashid within the framework of Islamic finance. Addressing the gaps in existing literature, the research employs qualitative methods, combining hadith criticism and Hassan Hanafi's hermeneutics framework. Three main themes emerge: the permissibility of rahn, the utilization of rahn property, and the prohibition of owning rahn property. Hadiths regarding the permissibility of rahn showcase Prophet Muhammad's practical application of Islamic principles in economic transactions, emphasizing justice, ethical business practices, and leadership involvement. Hadiths on the utilization of rahn property emphasize compensation, tolerance, and ethical treatment of animals, aligning with Islamic values in economic activities. The prohibition of owning rahn property hadith establishes fundamental principles of justice, equality, and the protection of individual rights in economic transactions. The article concluded that these hadiths not only serve as legal guidance but also embody prophetic maqashid, contributing to the broader goals of Islam to create a just and balanced society, particularly in economics and finance. The comprehensive framework provided by these hadiths offers valuable insights for both academics and practitioners navigating the evolving landscape of Islamic finance, addressing contemporary challenges while upholding Islamic values

Abstract

This study explores the strategic use of female teachers as ideological agents in Integrated Islamic Schools (IIS) within Early Childhood Education (ECE) institutions in Padang, Indonesia. It examines how gender roles are utilized to transmit ideological values to young students, raising concerns regarding ideological exploitation. The study is framed within the broader discourse of religious radicalism and gender instrumentalization in education, drawing upon the structuralist paradigm to assess institutional dynamics. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through questionnaires distributed to 43 female teachers across 11 IIS-ECE institutions and complemented by in-depth interviews with school leadership. The findings reveal that IIS intentionally recruits female teachers based on specific ideological criteria and integrates them into religious programs post-recruitment. Women are positioned as culturally acceptable figures to convey Islamic ideological values due to prevailing gender stereotypes and societal norms. This process, although appearing empowering, in fact conceals a mechanism of ideological exploitation that reproduces conservative religious identities in early education. The study concludes that women in IIS are simultaneously positioned as victims and agents within a structured ideological system, which has significant implications for understanding gender, power, and ideology in Islamic schooling. Future research is encouraged to adopt alternative paradigms that center women’s agency and rationality in such educational settings.

Abstract

This article aims to illustrate the power of Ramadan as a social space where the Muslim community can reproduce piety. Data were obtained through interviews, documentation, and surveys. The findings of this study highlight two important aspects that characteristically mark Ramadan as a social space. First, Ramadan has become a social arena for Muslims where piety and generosity suddenly emerge as identities continually contested by Muslims. Second, the sudden social patterns of piety and generosity observed among Muslims during Ramadan are shaped by the intersection of religion and local traditions such as padusan and balimau, nyadran and ziarah kubro, along with perlon unggahan and magengan. Therefore, with these findings, we assert that Ramadan not only functions as a social arena but also becomes a third space where society blends religion and tradition, simultaneously strengthening their identity and social status throughout the month of Ramadan

These Ulama have been instrumental in various aspects, including social, political, and religious realms. The article delves into the evolution of research publications related to the struggles of Ulama from 2010 to 2023.Methodology. The method employs a descriptive bibliometric analysis focused on the struggle of Ulama, using specific keywords like “Perjuangan” and “Ulama” on the Dimensions platform, within the timeframe of 2010 to 2023.Results and discussion. The results reveal fluctuations in the number of publications, ranging from a peak of 786 in 2018 to only 70 in 2023, with a significant spike in 2017. The research network involves three clusters of authors, highlighting diversity in the field. Overlay Visualization demonstrates strong author relationships, with some forming influential networks. The Indonesian Institute of Science had a notable impact on many writers. Density Visualization identifies active authors and Co-occurrence analysis reveals four keyword clusters, with “Islam” and “Indonesia” as primary foci. A trend shift occurred in 2020, with new keywords gaining prominence such as “Education, Women, Politic, and Law”. These data shows that research on the theme of the ulama's struggle still has many opportunities.Conclusions. The bibliometric analysis of ulama struggle research (2010-2023) provides information about publication fluctuations, close collaboration. Diversity, changing trends, and research potential that has not yet been fully explored regarding the struggles of ulama  is used to encourage and determine the focus for further research on the struggles of ulama.

Abstract

This article aims to introduce the Extended Case Method (ECM) as an approach to qualitative social research. As an approach, the ECM rooted in the ethnography approach in the anthropological tradition and developed in the sociological tradition research. With reference to Michael Buroway (1998) as a developer of ECM and some articles that used ECM as a method, this paper outlines the basic concepts of ECM, their advantages and infirmity, and the application of theories in social research by using ECM. As an extended case, there are four aspects that extend on ECM, namely intervention, processes, structuration, and reconstruction (theory). The advantage of ECM is their four extending. Rather than the infirmity of ECM rooted from their advantage, namely domination, silencing, objectification, and normalization. The use of theory in ECM was carried out from the beginning to the end of the study. Base on their characteristics, ECM very feasible to use to understanding borderless society and ambiguity of case study on research of social science in general, and ethnography especially.

Abstract

Christian students' involvement in the school Islamic programs such as wearing Muslim clothing, participating in the seven-minute Islamic sermon, and joining Islamic classes are often considered a compliance attitude. Instead, it is a process of self-adaptation because they attend a school within a Muslim majority environment.  Moreover, this camouflage represents their resistance to the school rules. This article discusses how Christian students in two state schools in Padang behave in the framework of Islamic customs. Based on the theories of Jean Baudrillard's simulacra and James C. Scott's resistance, the results of this study show that Christian students in two state schools in Padang tend to be obedient and interested in Islamic practices. For instance, they imitate the way Muslim students dress so that they look similar to Muslim students. This attitude pleases their Muslim teachers and fellow students. In addition, Minang people in their neighborhood also amaze and always refer to these Christian students€™ attitude as a model to be followed.
