Abstract

Some scholars have focused their attention on the process of democratization at the local level They argue that democracy at the local level will encourage the emergence of democracy at the national level Furthermore, neo-institutionalism approach is important in supporting transition to democracy at the local level. The approach has applied particular policies, such as decentralization and strengthening local parliament, local government capacity, political culture and civil society. This approach, however, did not work properly. The interests of political and economic players at the local level often hamper the work of neo-institutonalism approach.

Abstract

The research aimed to understand the process of political communication in the contestation of Mount Kelud between the Blitar and the Kediri Regency Government in regional autonomy era. Mediation and legal efforts have been carried out to resolve Mount Kelud dispute, but the Central Government has not decided the administrative boundaries of the two Regencies since 2003. The research took the perspective of Henri Lefebvre's space production, which stated that space produced in the community’s daily life (social space) and produced by power (political space). The study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The findings of the study revealed that the Kediri Regency Government has carried out cultural construction and communication through the “Larung Sesaji” in Kelud Mountain Festival. Meanwhile, Blitar Regency has not done similar activity; even if it has conducted the Sesani “Larung Intan.” The central government could consider the cultural space on Mount Kelud as a synthesis of social space and political space as an effort to resolve disputes over regional boundaries.

Abstract

In the early period of handling the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, the Indonesian government prioritized the economy and health sectors. This study argues that these government actions and policies are heavily influenced by discourse from the capitalist class. This study aims to discuss the articulation of several different discursive elements of the capitalist class in the early period of handling the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia and its impact on public policy. This study focuses on two capitalist classes, namely medical and non-medical capitalists. This study found that the discursive elements from the government on these two significant issues had in common with the discursive elements of these two capitalist classes. The discourse of public discipline over the use of medical products from medical capitalists had the same discursive elements as that of government discourse. Both of them articulated this discourse with the aim of public health, but theoretically, this is important to increase the accumulation of capital in the health industry in the future. Another group of capitalists, however, generally see this pandemic as a disaster and an obstacle to continue their capital accumulation. Therefore, the central discourse that was raised by this group was the economic impact of this pandemic. Although these two discourses are different, this study found that they are not contradictory but rather complementary. The discourse spread by the two capitalist classes influenced state policy in dealing with COVID-19 in Indonesia significantly. This study emphasizes the importance of the discourse articulation of the capitalist class in the politics of policymaking, especially in Indonesia.

Abstract

Balinese history records the existence of the puri as a center of power through a monarchy system led by a king (puri) from the early 10th century to the early 20th century. Puri in Bali also plays a role in various religious ceremonial rituals and traditional activities. The religious ideology of the puridoes not only play a role in the realm of religion, but has expanded into the cultural, social, economic and political realms. This study attempts to describe the relationship between the political religious of the puri and the community development program. The theory used to analyze is World Desecularization Theory and Patron-Client Theory. The research method used is a qualitative approach which is located in Gianyar Regency and is supported by data originating from books and journals. The results of the study found that the religious ideology of the puri had a positive relationship with the development progress of the community. Not infrequently regional development programs originate from these religious ideas. This research also explains the concept of puri political religios, in which religion in this case not only works to build an ideological ties, but more importantly religion is able to build social and economic ties for a society. This model of political religion indirectly maintains the political power of the puri in Bali.

Abstract

This study offers an in-depth comparative analysis of the voting behavior of the Madurese community in regional head elections, focusing on the differences between traditional voters influenced by kiai (Islamic scholars) and voters who tend to consider rational factors. This case study examines three main groups: the santri (religious students), the educated class, and the general public. The research is rooted in the central role of kiai within Madura's social and political structure, which has traditionally influenced election outcomes. However, recent corruption cases involving kiai who have served as regional heads raise questions about whether their influence remains or if there has been a shift in the community's voting behavior. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design, conducted in four regencies: Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep. Data were gathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with key informants from the three community groups, and documentation studies. Informants were selected based on their cultural involvement and experience in the election process. The findings indicate that although kiai continue to wield significant influence, especially among the santri, there is an emerging trend toward more rational voting behavior among the educated class and the general public. Factors such as candidate quality, vision and mission, and proposed programs are increasingly considered, particularly by students. Additionally, corruption cases involving kiai have led to more critical public perceptions of kiai in politics. This study identifies four voter typologies in Madura: rational, critical, traditional, and skeptical, highlighting the complexity of voting behavior in the region

Abstract

Introduction: : The fundamental theory posits that Islamic values encompass all human activities, including work ethics as an essential component of organizational behavior. However, today’s society is facing a decline in work ethics, necessitating readjustment. This study aims to bridge the gap by examining prior research on Islamic work ethics in Indonesia. Methods: A systematic literature review method was used to delve deeper into the development of research topics over the past decade (2014-2023) through a search of Scopus-indexed articles. After a screening process, the final sample, consisting of 38 articles, was processed for further analysis using meta synthesis approach to explore more specific understanding of Islamic work ethics by using Nvivo software. Results: The results showed that Islamic work ethics were affected by three main factors: community patterns, role of Islam, and organizational concept. The relationship between these three factors can encourage positive behavior in the workplace in Indonesia. Conclusion and suggestion: Islamic work ethics in Indonesia are not limited to religious value, but also the culture of the community. Mapping ideas of the three categories of Islamic work ethics in Indonesia can be useful for future empirical research to analyze the relationship among factors in shaping Islamic work ethics in Indonesia. The mapping ideas could also be implemented by organizations in daily business practices.
