Abstract

Fishermen play a crucial role in the 2016 national action plan for terubuk. Accordingly, conducting a study on fishermen is imperative. The primary objective of this research is to discern the characteristics and knowledge of local fishermen pertaining to terubuk. The employed method involved conducting interviews with 30 fishermen who specialize in catching terubuk. The collected data underwent descriptive quantitative analysis. The research findings revealed that all respondents were within the productive age range, and those engaged in supplementary occupations outnumbered the Bengkalis minimum salary. Local respondents exhibited a commendable level of knowledge, demonstrating an ability to articulate scientific concepts accurately, although utilizing diverse linguistic styles. In conclusion, this study posits that fishermen perceive the necessity of exploring alternative livelihoods that leverage their local knowledge. The expectation is that this approach can not only augment fishermen's income but also contribute to terubuk conservation endeavors.

Abstract

Macrozoobentos are known as organisms that are sensitive to environmental changes, so they are widely used as biological indicators of a water. This study aims to determine the types of macrozoobenthos, the level of diversity, uniformity, and dominance of macrozoobenthos, including the family biotic index (FBI) to detect water quality in Dumai City. The method used was a survey with stations determined through the purposive sampling. Macrozoobenthos samples were collected using a line transect with a square transect and a core sampler. A total of 381 macrozoobentos individuals found in the waters of Dumai City consisted of 6 species from the Gastropods class (Nerita articulata, Chicoreus capucinus, Littorina scabra, Ellobium aurisjudae, Cerithidae quoyii, and Pugilina cochlidium); Bivalvia class: 1 family and 1 species (Polymesoda bengalensis). The highest macrozoobenthos density was found at Station 3 (125 ind/m2) and the lowest at station 1 (21 ind/m2). The Shannon-Wienner diversity index ranged between 1.17 and 1.52. The diversity index at all stations was relatively low, the macrozoobenthos uniformity index was high (0.654697-to 0.783512), and the dominance index was relatively low (0.234078-to 0.43574). The Shannon-Wienner Index and the dominance index are also relatively low. Further testing using the FBI showed differences in water quality: Station 1 was adequate, Station 2 was poor, while Station 3 was somewhat poor. Monitoring macrozoobenthos diversity can be helpful in detecting changes or disturbances in ecosystems. Keywords: bioindicator, diversity, Family Biotik Index, macrozoobenthos

Abstract

Larva represents the initial phase of a fish’s life after hatching from the egg. Studies on fish larvae aim to provide seasonal information, as well as identify spawning and nursery areas, especially economically important fish species, to support the sustainability of fishery resources. This study aimed to gather information on the abundance, diversity, and distribution of fish larvae in the waters of the Bali Strait. Sampling was carried out from August to November 2024, using a trawl net at five observation stations. The larval samples were preserved with 4% formalin and subsequently identified and counted using a microscope at the Capture Fisheries Laboratory of Marine and Fisheries Polytechnic of Jembrana. This study found 22 families of fish larvae, with abundance ranging from 38 to 433 individuals per 1000 m3. Spatially, the highest abundance was recorded at the Perancak station, followed by Tuwed, Sumbersari, Cupel, and Jimbaran. Temporarily, fish larvae with high abundance were found from September to November. The larval composition was dominated by the families Clupeidae, Gobiidae, Bramidae, and Carangidae. Shannon-Wiener Index (H') of fish larvae ranged from 0.64 to 2.18, indicating that the level of diversity and stability of the community was at a low–moderate level. The highest diversity was found at Tuwed station. The distribution of fish larvae is influenced by oceanographic characteristics, fish behavior, and the availability of natural food sources, such as plankton.

Abstract

The mangrove ecosystem along the coast of Bulaksetra, Pangandaran, West Java, plays a crucial role in mitigating potential tsunami disasters. However, over the last five years, the Bulaksetra mangrove ecosystem area has seen intensive operation of local shrimp ponds, which has negatively impacted the growth and health of the surrounding mangrove stands. This study aims to monitor the changes in mangrove cover from 2020 to 2024 within the Bulaksetra mangrove ecosystem using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. The methodology employed to determine the extent and condition of mangrove cover involves the analysis of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) processed using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The results indicate significant habitat degradation within the Bulaksetra mangrove ecosystem, evidenced by a 96.94% loss of the Dense canopy class by 2024. This shift in density class is characterized by a transition from the Dense class to the Sparse (54.37%) and Moderate (42.58%) classes, accompanied by a 5.18% decrease in the total mangrove area. Conversely, the area occupied by shrimp ponds has continuously expanded, with a growth rate reaching 1.31 hectares per year. The expansion of shrimp ponds demonstrates a negative correlation with mangrove cover in the Bulaksetra mangrove area during the 2020 – 2024 period.

Abstract

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a critical aspect of fishing vessel operations due to the high risk of workplace accidents in the maritime environment. Compliance with the provision and use of safety equipment plays a key role in preventing accidents among crew members. This study aims to evaluate OHS compliance on longline fishing vessels based on national regulations and international safety standards. A descriptive research method with an observational approach was applied through direct inspection of personal protective equipment, occupational health facilities, and onboard safety equipment. The assessment criteria were based on Law Number 1 of 1970 on Occupational Safety, Law Number 36 of 2009 on Health, Regulation of the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Number 8 of 2010, and the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention 1974. The results indicate that most safety equipment is available and implemented; however, several non-compliances with established standards were identified, particularly regarding head protection, first aid kit completeness, and the availability of liferafts. These findings highlight the need for improved supervision, full compliance with safety standards, and the strengthening of OHS culture to reduce occupational accident risks on fishing vessels.
