Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve vocational students’ competence in metal casting by introducing LPG-fueled furnaces and UNNES crucibles fabricated from evaporation boat waste. The partner, SMK Negeri 2 Kudus, faced two main challenges: limited utilization of aluminum scrap from automotive practice and the absence of affordable, durable crucibles for repeated casting activities. The program applied a structured approach consisting of socialization, training, mentoring, and evaluation. Activities included theoretical instruction, pretest–posttest assessment, and hands-on workshops involving furnace operation, crucible utilization, mold preparation, and aluminum casting. Results demonstrated significant improvements: the average pretest score of 4.85 increased to 9.0 in the posttest, reflecting an 85.57% gain in competence. Qualitative observations showed that students developed greater confidence, teamwork, and adherence to safety standards. Beyond competence improvement, the innovation provided a cost-effective and sustainable solution for recycling aluminum scrap and reducing dependence on expensive imported crucibles. The program effectively integrated research-based technology into vocational education and aligned with the Teaching Factory model. This collaboration between university and school can serve as a replicable model for other vocational institutions seeking to strengthen practical skills, sustainability, and industry relevance.

Abstract

Wonogiri Regency, Central Java, is famous for its large number of residents who work as breeders, especially sheep/goat breeders. The feed for goats/sheep breeders in Wonogiri district is sourced from weeds. However, the enumeration was still done manually using a sickle, so the enumeration process was ineffective because it required more time and effort. Through this community service scheme, the process of making a machine for chopping weeds is carried out which will later be used as fodder for goats/sheep, especially in the Wonogiri area. The machine is driven by an electric motor and there is a chopping knife which is designed to be more effective. The results of this community service program show that the increase in sheep feed production increased from 200 kg/day before using the machine to 350 kg/day or an increase of up to 75% when compared to without the chopping machine.

Abstract

This research aims to design a decomposing blade, sieving system, and test machine products. The method for completing coconut fiber processing machines consists of three stages, namely the design and production process stages, as well as machine product testing. This research produces the following data, namely the design of the untangling knife which is a combination of the functions of the coir untangling knife for random and woven results. Calculation of the equilibrium moment on the shaft obtained a value of 𝑅𝑉𝐵 is 28.68 N and the reaction at point A was 𝑅𝑉𝐴 is 28.32 N, with the diameter of the shaft used in the coconut fiber sieving machine transmission system being Ø28 mm. Fiber uniformity is obtained from twice decomposition processes, whereas the level of fiber/powder uniformity is influenced by the long sieving process time and also the high rotational speed of the sieve.

Abstract

Motorcycle piston waste, made from aluminum, is often poorly managed despite its advantages in corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity. This study aims to enhance the economic value of piston waste through recycling using the sand casting method. The melting process was conducted at a temperature of 843°C, followed by casting into sand molds. The recycled product is intended for use as a ship propeller component. Tests performed included Vickers hardness testing and microstructural analysis to evaluate the mechanical properties and material characteristics. The results showed that the recycled material exhibited an average hardness of 77.2 kg/mm², consistent with standard aluminum hardness. Microstructural analysis revealed the presence of porosity which may affect mechanical strength; however, this porosity did not reduce the material's resistance to mechanical damage and provided good toughness. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that motorcycle piston waste recycled by sand casting at 843 °C has potential for use in manufacturing high-value components such as ship propellers, considering the hardness quality and microstructural characteristics of the material.

Abstract

Surface roughness is a critical indicator of machining quality, directly affecting the functional performance and service life of manufactured components. This study aims to optimize the surface roughness of AISI 1045 steel by varying parameters (cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut) using Taguchi L9 orthogonal array. Experiments were conducted on a FANUC 0i-Mate CNC lathe using Al-TiN-coated VNMG inserts. Moreover, the surface roughness was measured in accordance with ISO standards. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed the depth of cut was the most influential factor (45.21%), followed by cutting speed and feed rate. The Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio was identified as optimal surface roughness of 0.323 µm (N5 grade) at the parameter, with a cutting speed of 240 mm/min, a feed rate of 0.2 mm/rev, and a depth of cut of 0.6 mm. The novelty of this study is the demonstration that Taguchi's design and ANOVA combined can achieve reliable optimization results with considerably reduced experimental effort and offer practical industrial deployment, including for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Abstract

The gear sprocket is a transmission system component that operates under repeated torsional and frictional loads, making its surface susceptible to wear. To improve wear resistance, a treatment is required to harden the surface layer without significantly altering its dimensions. This study aims to evaluate the effect of combining ice-water quenching and varying shot peening pressures on the surface hardness and microstructural changes of a medium carbon steel gear sprocket. The specimens were austenitized at 850 °C for 15 minutes and rapidly cooled using ice water. Subsequent shot peening was performed for 20 minutes using 0.6 mm diameter steel shots at pressures of 5, 6, 7, and 8 bar. Surface hardness was measured using the Vickers (HV) method, and microstructural observations were conducted with an optical microscope after 2% Nital etching to identify phase transformations. The results show that ice-water quenching increased the surface hardness from 199 HV to 329 HV, representing an increase of approximately 65% over the untreated condition. The combination of quenching and shot peening further enhanced hardness to 404 HV, 454 HV, 487 HV, and 552 HV at 5, 6, 7, and 8 bar, respectively, with the maximum improvement reaching 177% compared to the untreated specimen. Microstructural analysis revealed fine martensitic structures on the quenched surface and a plastically deformed layer produced by shot impacts. Therefore, the combination of ice-water quenching and shot peening effectively enhances surface hardness and refines the microstructure of gear sprockets, indicating its potential application in improving the transmission components wear resistance.
