Abstract

Proficient reading comprehension is a fundamental pillar of language acquisition and academic excellence, empowering students to extract meaning from a diverse array of texts and nurturing essential critical thinking skills. This qualitative investigation delves into students' perceptions and utilization of reading strategies, employing comprehensive in-depth interviews and focused group discussions with tenth-grade high school students. Employing a phenomenological research framework, the study delves into how students actively employ a range of strategies, the rationale underlying their choice of specific techniques, and their evaluations of the efficacy of these strategies in bolstering reading comprehension. The findings underscore the dynamic nature of strategy preference and utilization among students. Participants exhibit a diverse spectrum of preferences, embracing strategies such as visualization, questioning, summarization, and forging connections based on their unique learning styles and contextual exigencies. These strategies emerge as cognitive tools that not only facilitate profound interaction with the text but also contribute to comprehension and the retention of knowledge. Remarkably, participants showcase metacognitive awareness, thoughtfully reflecting on their strategic decisions and adapting these strategies in consonance with the complexity of the text. The exploration further unveils the influence of cultural and linguistic factors on strategy selection. Participants hailing from various backgrounds emphasize how their cultural heritage and language proficiency mould their approach to reading. Additionally, discernible patterns in strategy preferences across demographic variables, including age, gender, and language proficiency, are identified, thereby offering nuanced insights into the interplay between personal attributes and strategic engagement. Ultimately, this research enriches our comprehension of reading comprehension strategies by illuminating the intricate interplay of individual characteristics, cultural contexts, and strategic deployment.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the types of teacher talk and their meanings in dealing with diverse students. This research aimed to explore several fundamental aspects that occurred in classroom interaction. They are: 1) the types of teacher talk; 2) the most dominant and least performed type of teacher talk; and 3) the contribution of teacher talk to supporting learning. This research was a case study with the participation of three English teachers. The data had been collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. In examining the utterances uttered by all teachers, video recordings were utilised throughout the learning process. The result of the video transcription was then analysed using Moskowitz’s FLINT system to categorise the type of teacher talk. The result was then cross-checked with the interview and questionnaire to support the validity of the data. The study's findings demonstrated that during the teaching and learning process, teachers used nearly every kind of teacher discourse. Joking was the least frequent sort of speech, while asking questions was the most frequent. Through their utterances during the session, the teacher also provided support to the students who transferred from situations where English was not their first or second language. Teachers facing comparable situations may find it helpful to consider the study's implications and outcomes while trying to boost student engagement, which in turn encourages students to participate more actively in the learning process. Abstract

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the Beelinguapp application in improving EFL students' reading comprehension of narrative texts at SMKN I Cirebon and to determine the benefits of implementing this technology in the learning process. English language skills are crucial both globally and within the Indonesian education system. EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners often struggle with reading comprehension, a critical skill that involves various cognitive processes and understanding the meaning of texts. Narrative texts, which are engaging and rich in moral values, are favored by students. This research use a quantitative approach was employed using an experimental method with a pretest-posttest design and questionnaires. The study sample consisted of 60 students from Class X TEI 1 - TEI 4, selected through random sampling. Data collection techniques included a pretest, posttest, and questionnaire administered to the experimental group. The results indicated a significant improvement in reading comprehension, with a t-value of 8.029, which is greater than the t-table value of 2.022 (Sig. 2-Tailed = 0.000 < 0.05). Thus, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, confirming that Beelinguapp positively and significantly impacts reading comprehension of narrative texts. Additionally, student feedback from questionnaires revealed cognitive improvements in learning outcomes, particularly in reading comprehension, after the application of the Beelinguapp in the learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the EXCHIL Model (Experience-Based Contextual Hybrid Learning) in improving the speaking skills of students in the English Language Education Study Program at Institut Prima Bangsa. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design with a descriptive approach, the study involved 52 students. Quantitative data were obtained through questionnaires and pre-test–post-test scores, while qualitative data were collected from observations and in-depth interviews with three students. The main challenges identified were limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and speaking anxiety. Results showed a substantial improvement in students’ speaking performance, with the average pre-test score of 66.2 to 82.4 in the post-test. The score distribution also shifted positively, as more students achieved scores in the 75–85 range, while fewer scored below 70. Qualitative findings revealed enhanced fluency, confidence, and willingness to speak after the implementation of the model. These findings suggest that integrating experiential, contextual, and hybrid elements can foster student-centered language learning adaptable to diverse digital environments. Overall, the results highlight the potential of the EXCHIL Model for advancing 21st-century EFL pedagogy.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges of teaching English, specifically listening comprehension, at MA Alhijrah Cimaung. Conventional teaching methods often fail to engage students effectively, leading to disinterest and a gap between learning objectives and achievement. To address this, the study explores the integration of technology, specifically the Powtoon app, as an innovative solution to improve the learning process. The research reveals a significant improvement in listening comprehension for students using Powtoon compared to those in the control group using traditional methods. While the effect size is relatively small, this finding provides concrete evidence of Powtoon's potential in enhancing English language learning at the high school level. Incorporating Powtoon into the curriculum at MA Alhijrah Cimaung can greatly benefit students' understanding of narrative text. The study recommends further integration of technology in English language teaching and suggests conducting additional research to explore the impact of technology on student learning. These efforts aim to enhance educational practices and improve the overall quality of education in schools.
