Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategy of translating English slang based on TikTok content by fifth semester students of English Education Department Universitas Islam Madura. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through a translation worksheet and semi-structured interviews with 23 students. Ten slang words from TikTok were chosen as translation material. The results showed that the most dominant strategy used was equivalence, where students tended to choose the appropriate meaning in the target culture, such as translating "you bet" to "pasti" or "oke", and "slay" to "memukau". Other strategies such as adaptation, expansion, and free translation are also used according to context. However, mistakes are still found, especially when students translate literally, such as "pick me" into "choosing me", which causes the meaning is not right. From the results of the interview, the main obstacles in translating slang are idioms and cultural references, as well as the cultural distance between the source language and the target.  This research shows the importance of cultural awareness and bilingual ability to translate slang contextually and effectively.

Abstract

This study examines the sociolinguistic phenomenon of parbhâsan alos, a variation of Madurese language that reflects respect, politeness, and cultural attitudes among santri putri of Islamic Boarding School. Although a number of studies have discussed Madurese language in general, studies that specifically explore the role of language as a reflection of cultural attitudes in the Islamic boarding school environment, especially among santri putri, are still very limited. This study aims to understand how language variations are used as a reflection of social and cultural values in everyday life in the Islamic boarding school environment. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study design. Data were collected through non- participant observation, documentation, and field notes for two weeks. The results of the study indicate that bhâsa èngghi-bhunten is used when interacting with the caretaker of islamic boarding school, ustadz, and administrators of the Islamic boarding school; bhâsa engghi-enten is used in conversations between santri putri; while the bhâsa enjâ’-iyâ is used when interacting with younger people. The use of this language variation is influenced by the rules of the Islamic boarding school which require the use of polite and polite Madurese language in everyday life. For example, when one of a santri putri answer the call of the ustadz by saying, "Èngghi, ka'dinto Ustadz?" (“Yes, what's wrong Ustadz?”). while lowering the head and bowing slightly, a form of respect that reflects politeness verbally and nonverbally. This finding shows that language in islamic boarding school not only functions as a means of communication, but also as a medium for cultural transmission that forms an identity based on respect and maintains the traditional hierarchical structure in Islamic education.

Abstract

This study explores the sociolinguistic phenomenon of language variation among Indonesian teenagers influenced by the online multiplayer game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation and surveys involving 15 teenagers aged 15–25 from Pamekasan, East Java. Guided by Labov’s Variationist Sociolinguistics theory, the research investigates three core issues: (1) the types of language variations that emerge within the Mobile Legends community, (2) the influence of the game on teenagers’ linguistic behavior, and (3) the impact of these variations on their social interactions. Findings reveal that Mobile Legends creates a distinctive linguistic environment characterized by gaming-specific jargon, slang, code-switching, and situational register shifts. These linguistic features reflect a hybrid style shaped by both global digital language and local vernacular practices. Importantly, this language extends beyond the gaming context, permeating daily conversations among peer groups. The use of in-game language serves not only for strategic communication but also as a marker of group identity and belonging. However, the study also identifies potential concerns, such as the normalization of vulgar language and a decline in formal communication norms. Additionally, linguistic variation in gaming contexts contributes to the formation of social hierarchies, reinforces group solidarity, and can lead to exclusionary practices toward non-gamers. These findings highlight the need for educational stakeholders to consider the impact of digital culture on adolescent language development, particularly within the Indonesian context.

Abstract

: The phenomenon of reduplication in the Madurese language is essential for enriching vocabulary and facilitating nuanced communication. This research explores the sociolinguistic and cross-linguistic aspects of reduplication in Madurese, emphasizing its diverse meanings and its interplay with other linguistic components. Our analysis seeks to reveal the ways in which reduplication influences cultural and social interactions among speakers of Madurese. Employing a qualitative methodology, data was collected through observations and interviews with native speakers. A comparative sociolinguistic approach was utilized to examine reduplication in Madurese in relation to analogous patterns in Javanese and Indonesian, underscoring the impact of contextual, cultural, and linguistic factors on meaning. The results demonstrate that reduplication in Madurese fulfills various functions, including the expression of plurality, intensity, and emotional nuances. Reduplicated nouns typically denote plurality, whereas adjectives indicate intensification, showcasing functions that differ from those in Javanese and Indonesian. This research enhances our comprehension of the multifaceted role of reduplication in Madurese, illustrating its contribution to linguistic identity and cultural representation. These results highlight the significance of studying reduplication to grasp the processes of meaning-making within sociolinguistic frameworks.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research aimed to improve the narrative writing skills of tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Pademawu through the implementation of the Fractured Story model. The study involved 28 students and was conducted over two cycles following the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected using pretests, posttests, observations, and documentation. In the pretest, none of the students achieved the minimum passing score of 75, with an average score of only 45.00. After the first cycle, the average score increased to 69.11, with 28.57% of students reaching the minimum criteria. In the second cycle, all students passed, achieving an average score of 95.89. This shows a total improvement of 50.89 points or 113.09% from the pretest. The results indicate that the Fractured Story model effectively enhanced students’ writing performance, motivation, creativity, and critical thinking. By reconstructing well-known stories into new and imaginative narratives, students developed a better understanding of narrative structure and gained more confidence in expressing their ideas. The model also made learning more engaging and meaningful, as it encouraged students to connect the content with their own experiences and imagination. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Fractured Story model is an effective approach to improve students’ ability in writing narrative texts in English language learning.
