Abstract

The Mangupa ceremony is one of the most significant traditional rituals of the Mandailing community, rich in educational, moral, and spiritual values. This study aims to examine the educational values embedded in the Mangupa ceremony and their relevance to strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile within the context of character education. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through literature studies and analysis of cultural values reflected in the symbols, meanings, and rituals of the ceremony. The findings reveal that the Mangupa ceremony embodies several core educational values, including religious devotion and gratitude, respect for parents and tradition, independence and responsibility, love for nature and ecological awareness, as well as solidarity and mutual cooperation. These values represent moral and social principles that can shape students to become faithful, virtuous, independent, cooperative, critical-thinking, and globally minded individuals in accordance with the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile. The Mangupa tradition thus functions not only as a cultural ritual but also as an educational medium that instills spiritual, social, and ecological awareness. Therefore, preserving and integrating the values contained in the Mangupa ceremony into character education based on local wisdom is highly relevant to strengthening the cultural identity and moral integrity of Indonesia’s young generation.

Abstract

Pernikahan dini merupakan salah satu isu penting yang berdampak signifikan terhadap kesehatan reproduksi remaja, khususnya di kalangan perempuan. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa-siswi SMAN 1 Panyabungan mengenai dampak negatif pernikahan dini terhadap kesehatan fisik, mental, dan sosial. Metode yang digunakan meliputi penyuluhan interaktif, diskusi kelompok, dan penyebaran materi edukasi.Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa siswa-siswi memiliki peningkatan pemahaman tentang risiko pernikahan dini, termasuk gangguan kesehatan reproduksi, komplikasi kehamilan, serta dampak psikososial yang dapat menghambat perkembangan pribadi dan pendidikan. Partisipasi aktif siswa dalam diskusi juga mencerminkan minat mereka terhadap topik ini dan kesadaran akan pentingnya menunda pernikahan hingga usia matang.Melalui program ini, diharapkan terjadi perubahan perilaku dan pola pikir masyarakat di sekitar SMAN 1 Panyabungan untuk mendukung remaja dalam mencapai potensi maksimalnya sebelum memasuki jenjang pernikahan. Kegiatan ini juga merekomendasikan pendekatan berkelanjutan melalui kerjasama dengan pihak sekolah, orang tua, dan pemerintah setempat.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of participatory da'wah (Islamic outreach) based on the majelis taklim (Islamic study groups) as a catalyst for social transformation of Muslim families in Mandailing Natal Regency. The study used a qualitative approach with a multiple case study design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies at several active majelis taklim (Islamic study groups). Data were then analyzed using thematic and cross-case analysis. The results show that the majelis taklim developed a participatory da'wah model through da'wah bil-lisan (oral da'wah), da'wah bil-hal (oral da'wah), family economic empowerment programs, and the use of digital media. Active member participation was a key factor in the program's success. The resulting social transformation encompassed religious dimensions, family education, and family economics. A total of 91.2% of respondents experienced an increase in the quality of family worship, 78.6% experienced changes in parenting patterns to be more Islamic, and 64.3% experienced economic improvements through skills and entrepreneurship programs. This success was supported by strong social capital, support from religious and traditional leaders, and the cultural values ​​of Dalihan Na Tolu. This research produces the concept of Community-Based Participatory Da'wah (DPBK) as a da'wah model that integrates Islamic values, community empowerment, social capital, and local wisdom in encouraging social transformation of Muslim families.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyze the role of Bagas Godang and Sopo Godang as instruments for moral and value education among Mandailing youth in the effort to preserve local wisdom and shape the character of the next generation. The background of this research stems from the declining understanding of young generations toward the noble values of Mandailing customs, particularly those reflected in the social system and traditional architecture of these two structures. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders, community members, and youth, as well as analysis of various Mandailing cultural documents. The findings reveal that Bagas Godang and Sopo Godang are not merely historical buildings but also serve as social educational symbols rich in moral values such as mutual cooperation, deliberation, respect for elders, responsibility, and togetherness. Their role within the customary structure holds educational meaning that can be integrated into both formal and non-formal education systems as a medium for instilling national character. Thus, preserving the values embedded in Bagas Godang and Sopo Godang through value-based education is an essential step in maintaining the cultural identity of the Mandailing community and strengthening the moral foundation of the younger generation amid the challenges of globalization

Abstract

This article discusses the development of reading materials based on Mandailing folktales as a strategy to increase children's interest in literacy. Folktales are an important part of local culture, containing educational and moral values. However, children in the Mandailing region still have low interest in reading, which can hinder their literacy development. Through this community service, we strive to create reading materials that are engaging and relevant to the local culture, thereby capturing children's attention. This activity includes collecting and adapting Mandailing folktales, developing engaging reading materials, and conducting literacy workshops for children. By involving the local community, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of literacy and local culture. Results from this activity indicate that children are more enthusiastic about reading when the reading materials presented relate to stories they know and love. Furthermore, this activity provides an opportunity for parents and educators to play an active role in supporting children's reading interests. Thus, the development of reading materials based on Mandailing folklore serves not only as a tool to increase literacy interest but also as an effort to preserve local culture. It is hoped that this initiative can serve as a model for other regions in developing children's literacy through an approach based on local wisdom.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Domestic violence (DV) remains a persistent social and legal issue in Mandailing Natal Regency, Indonesia, where limited legal literacy and socio-cultural perceptions often hinder prevention efforts and discourage victims from seeking assistance. This community service program aimed to enhance community legal literacy, strengthen Islamic da'wah values in preventing domestic violence, and develop a sustainable community-based prevention mechanism in Panyabungan District. The program adopted a participatory approach through legal education sessions, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), case-based learning, and community mentoring involving 85 participants, including housewives, religious leaders, community leaders, village officials, and young women. Program effectiveness was evaluated using pre- and post-intervention assessments, participant observations, and discussion outcomes. The results indicated a 73% increase in participants' understanding of Law No. 23 of 2004 concerning the Elimination of Domestic Violence, a 68% improvement in their ability to identify early indicators of domestic violence, and the successful establishment of a Community-Based Domestic Violence Prevention Task Force. The integration of legal education with Islamic da'wah values also fostered a shift in community perceptions, recognizing domestic violence not merely as a private family matter but as a public social issue requiring collective responsibility and intervention. This integrated legal–religious empowerment model demonstrates the potential for strengthening community participation, improving legal awareness, and establishing sustainable domestic violence prevention mechanisms in rural communities.

Abstract

In the current era of digital media transformation, professional organizations play a decisive role in sustaining journalistic standards. This study investigates how the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Mandailing Natal branch shapes the professional competencies of its members through institutional practices. Drawing on qualitative case study methodology, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with eighteen informants, participatory observation, and documentary analysis over forty days at the PWI Mandailing Natal secretariat. Thematic analysis reveals that PWI contributes to competency development through four principal mechanisms: formal training programs including Journalist Competency Tests (UKW), professional networking and knowledge exchange, journalistic ethics enforcement and mediation, and advocacy for press freedom and journalist protection. Nevertheless, the organization confronts persistent structural challenges, including limited budgetary resources, uneven member participation, a pronounced generational digital skills divide, and the accelerating pace of media industry transformation. These findings underscore the central yet constrained role of local professional associations in building journalism capacity in non-metropolitan regions. The study recommends differentiated training, formalized mentoring schemes, strengthened institutional partnerships, and supportive public policy frameworks to enhance organizational effectiveness in sustaining professional journalism.

Abstract

The limited capacity to write books based on local wisdom in Mandailing Natal Regency presents a serious challenge to literacy development and cultural preservation. Despite its rich cultural heritage and strong traditional values, much of this local wisdom remains undocumented in professionally published books. Many community members, including educators, lack adequate skills in manuscript writing and publishing. This Community Partnership Program (PKM) aims to enhance the ability of teachers and the wider community in Mandailing Natal Regency to write and publish ISBN-registered books that focus on local wisdom and cultural heritage. The program provides participants with theoretical knowledge and practical skills covering the entire book-writing process, including idea development, data collection, manuscript writing, editing, layout design, publishing procedures, ISBN registration, copyright, and ethical writing. The training employed lectures, discussions, case studies, and hands-on practice supported by intensive mentoring from experienced facilitators. Conducted over four weeks, the program involved 60 participants, comprising students, university students, teachers, librarians, and literacy activists. The results showed meaningful outcomes: all participants produced draft manuscripts related to Mandailing Natal local wisdom, and 18 drafts met publication standards and were compiled into one ISBN-registered book. Evaluation results also revealed a 30% increase in average pretest and posttest scores, indicating an improvement in understanding and writing competence. Overall, the program makes a positive contribution to strengthening literacy and preserving local wisdom in the Mandailing Natal Regency.

Abstract

Pesantren merupakan lembaga pendidikan islam yang tertua dengan segala kekhassannya di Indonesia. Sebagai institusi pendidikan islam yang melahirkan kader-kader ulama pesantren juga diterpa isu negatif sebagai institusi yang bisa memunculkan paham radikalisme agama yang bisa menjadi ancaman bagi NKRI. Tulisan ini berupaya untuk menelaah tentang penerapan nilai-nilai multikuturalisme di pesantren dalam mengantisipasi radikalisme agama. Ada beberapa faktor yang membentuk itu Pertama, mengimplementasikan Islam ra?matan li’l-‘?lam?n melalui pola pengajaran, materi pembelajaran, yang pada akhirnya membentuk karakter santri yang inklusif, ramah, dan toleran. Toleransi disini tidak hanya pada tataran konseptual, melainkan juga pada teknik operasionalnya. Kedua, secara praksis warga pesantren mampu melakukan adaptasi sosial dalam bentuk komunikasi interaktif dengan masyarakat sehingga persepsi radikalisme yang selalu diidentikkan dengan pesantren bisa terbantahkan. simpulan dari kajian ini menekankan peran pesantren dalam membendung radikalisme, secara institusional harus responsif dan menekankan keimanan dan akhlak karimah. Pendidikan pesantren harus berbasis multikultural, termasuk di dalamnya pemahaman tentang realitas keberagamaan. Sebagai institusi pendidikan keagamaan yang mampu mengolah dan meramu segala kearifan lokal dalam wajah Islam Nusantara, pesantren diharapkan dapat membantah persepsi dunia tentang Islam yang selalu diidentikkan dengan agama teror dan kebencian.
