Abstract

The socialization of feminine hygiene practices for Generation Z adolescent girls is a crucial step in improving their health and well-being. The "Slay Your Day: The Secret of Adolescent Feminine Hygiene" program was held on August 23, 2024, at SMK Fatimah Mamuju, attended by 50 female students from grades X to XII. Using an interactive lecture method, the speakers from St. Fatimah Mamuju Institute of Health and Business delivered comprehensive materials covering basic menstrual knowledge, the safe use of hygiene products, and the importance of maintaining mental health during menstruation. The participants demonstrated high enthusiasm, actively engaging in discussions, and asking critical questions. This socialization successfully increased the awareness and knowledge of adolescent girls about feminine hygiene, empowering them to take better care of their health. The program addressed the issues of lack of knowledge and access to hygiene products and helped reduce the stigma surrounding menstruation. The participants are expected to become agents of change, spreading knowledge to their peers and families, thereby contributing to improved feminine hygiene practices in their communities.

Abstract

This study reveals the serious challenges faced by the community in Lebani Village, particularly in the Nipa-Nipa Selatan hamlet, regarding household waste and garbage management. The lack of adequate waste disposal facilities often leads to indiscriminate dumping of trash, creating environmental and public health issues. To address this problem, the study proposes solutions focusing on enhancing household waste management literacy. The research methodology involved the active participation of students from the ST Fatimah Mamuju Institute of Health and Business during their Field Learning Practice (PBL), enabling data collection from the Posko V of Lebani Village, particularly the Nipa-Nipa hamlet, in December 2022. The findings reveal that the Lebani Village community tends to use waste management strategies involving temporary storage and disposal into rivers or the sea. However, this method is limited in capacity and efficiency and potentially pollutes the water, leading to blockages. Based on these findings, the study highlights the need for innovative strategies in waste management to achieve better efficiency and promote recycling. In conclusion, the government needs to pay special attention and support environmentally friendly waste management programs in Lebani Village. Enhancing household waste management literacy is also a key step in changing community behavior towards waste management. Thus, this research provides a framework for addressing waste management issues in rural villages, with the hope of improving overall environmental quality and community welfare.

Abstract

Maternal mortality is an indicator that shows the welfare of women in a country is not guaranteed. The urgency of maternal and child health has been on the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals. This means that maternal mortality must be immediately reduced to 70 per 100,000 live births. The purpose of this study was to examine the epidemiology and underlying causes of postpartum hemorrhage in women. The study was designed in the form of a cohort study using 14 female respondents who were patients at Mitra Manakarra Mamuju Hospital. The study was conducted in July–December 2023. The results found that factors of education, parity, history of anemia, and birth spacing are risk factors for bleeding. Causes of bleeding in postpartum respondents include placental retention, uterine atony, and birth canal tears. It is therefore important to prevent bleeding by treating anemia at birth, spacing births between 2 and 5 years, and increasing maternal knowledge.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a contraceptive education pocket book for the fishing community of Pitusingguh. The research employed a developmental approach, involving needs analysis, expert validation, and limited trials. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and questionnaires, and then analyzed using descriptive and content analysis techniques. The results showed that the developed pocket book effectively addressed the unique needs of the coastal community, with expert validation scores averaging above 4 out of 5 for accuracy, content relevance, and visual appeal. Limited trials with 15 coastal women revealed high levels of comprehension and information relevance (average scores of 4 and 4.5 out of 5, respectively). The study found that incorporating cultural sensitivity, integrating community-based health services, and implementing behavior change communication strategies were crucial in creating an acceptable and relevant educational tool. The pocket book shows potential for improving knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding contraceptive use among the Pitusingguh fishing community, although further content adjustments are recommended to accommodate various education levels.

Abstract

Literacy in self-breast examination (SADARI) still lacks attention from the community. Urban women in marginal communities even have limited access to health information. As a result, early detection of breast cancer remains a significant challenge for them. This study aims to obtain an overview of SADARI literacy among urban women in marginal communities. The study was conducted using a descriptive quantitative approach with a random sampling technique. The respondents were 79 women from the Az Zahra fisherman community in Ujung Tanah District, Makassar. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire sheet and observations consisting of 20 questions. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics using Excel. The early cancer detection variables used are self-breast examination (SADARI) and clinical breast examination (SADANIS). The results of this study indicate that SADARI literacy among urban women in marginal communities is still low. There are five indicators measured in this study, with the results showing respondents who have a good understanding of the purpose of SADARI (27%), the benefits of SADARI (11%), how to perform SADARI (7%), the appropriate time to perform SADARI (13%), and the signs found and the appropriate time to perform SADANIS (23%). This research can be a reference for the government to promote the socialization of early breast cancer detection that reaches marginal communities.

Abstract

In Bugis-Makassar families with a patriarchal cultural system, men are the backbone of the family and women only work in the domestic realm. The main problem faced by widows and divorcees of coastal fishers is the dual role that requires them to take care of the household and children as well as earn a living for the needs of the family. This dual function requires a widow to have a strategy and carry out these two roles simultaneously. This study aims to find out how the strategies for making a living for widows of coastal fishers in improving the family economy. This study uses a qualitative approach with case study method. The data collection technique uses a purposive sampling for determining the informant and conducting in-depth interview technique with eight widows consisting of four widows and four divorcees. We also observed the daily activities of the informants. Meanwhile, the interview process was carried out using semi-structured interviews about how the strategy for earning a living was carried out so that it could support the family economy. The study found social capital-based livelihood strategies for poor fishers. They often interpret the strategy as a way or an alternative to a situation. In this case, the widow or divorcee of a coastal fisher is part of the community. Widows and divorcees who work in more than one type of work make their association with others as a form of social capital. Thus, they can provide support to each other as aform of social security and  social capital to support the family.

Abstract

Background: Challenges in adolescent reproductive health, particularly the adolescent reproductive health triad (sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and substance abuse), are a global health concern. Traditional health education approaches are unable to address the learning preferences of Generation Z, who are digital natives. This requires culturally responsive and technology-based interventions. Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of local wisdom-based digital storytelling in improving adolescents' knowledge and attitudes towards the reproductive triad. Method: A quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design with a mixed-methods approach was used in this study. Adolescent girls were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (digital storytelling integrating Sipakatau-Sipakainge values) or a control group (conventional lecture and discussion). The study was conducted from August to September 2025 at two schools: SMP Negeri 3 Makassar and SD Pabundukan, Gowa Regency. Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to the reproductive health triad were measured using a validated questionnaire. Qualitative data was collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. Data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics, with N-Gain scores calculated for effectiveness comparisons. Results: Digital storytelling demonstrated superior effectiveness with high N-Gain scores for HIV knowledge (0.71) and substance abuse (1.00) compared to conventional methods, which showed moderate to low scores (0.30 and 0.25). Sexuality knowledge achieved a moderate increase (0.50 vs. 0.33). Qualitative findings revealed a 76% preference for visual and interactive learning modalities. The digital approach demonstrated consistent effectiveness across all domains with no low scores, while conventional methods showed deficits in substance abuse education. Conclusion: Digital storytelling based on local wisdom significantly outperformed conventional health education in addressing adolescent reproductive health challenges among Generation Z learners.   Keywords: Adolescents; Attitudes; Digital Storytelling; Knowledge; Local Wisdom; Reproductive Health.   Pendahluan: Tantangan kesehatan reproduksi remaja, khususnya triad kesehatan reproduksi remaja (masalah seksualitas, HIV/AIDS, dan penyalahgunaan zat), menjadi perhatian kesehatan global.
