Abstract

Islamization has been one of the dominant discourses in the Ponorogo region, shaping various aspects of social and cultural life. The traditional art of Reyog Ponorogo represents a local cultural practice that cannot be separated from this discourse. This study aims to examine the influence of Islamization discourse on the traditions of Reyog Ponorogo. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach and a critical paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman. Michel Foucault’s discourse theory (1926–1984) serves as the primary analytical framework. The findings reveal that Islamization discourse in Ponorogo has significantly transformed the values embedded in Reyog Ponorogo and shaped public perceptions of traditional culture. This transformation is evident in the modification of song lyrics, costume design, ritual offerings, and the gemblak tradition. Furthermore, Islamization has influenced how Reyog Ponorogo is practiced within the broader context of cultural development and preservation. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of shifting cultural identity in Ponorogo and demonstrates the relevance of Foucault’s theory in analyzing the dynamics of religious discourse. The originality of this research lies in its application of Foucault’s discourse theory to the transformation of Reyog Ponorogo, a perspective that has not been systematically explored in previous studies.

Abstract

In articulating the visual elements of Keris we will find the concept of symbols, each of which corresponds to the typology of signs. The relationships among the trichotomy signs associated with the codes represent the horizon of the Javanese society regarding the Keris culture. All the Keris signs establish the abstracts relationship model that never has any function before being associated with the code. Principally, people who become the message recipient can perform decoding act by associating the signs with certain conventions. The expression articulation through the Keris elements is a symbol in the typology of signs. The Javanese society’s response or appreciation concerning the invented conventions needs to be investigated to conversely understand the system of signs production. The word kris, as an example, is semiotically classified into other words; keris, dhuhung, dhuwung, curiga, wangkingan, duwung, curiga, and katga, all of which refers to the same sign, which is the tipped stabbing weapons and covered in scabbard. This study found the cultural event of the ideological masking which represents certain period i.e. the deconstructive meanings on the luk of keris (kemba and rengkol) illustrated the ideological transformation from Hinduism to Islamic era.

In order to arrive at an in-depth interpretation, the following theoretical knowledge is used: sociocultural, sociolinguistic, capitalism, hegemony, hegemonic, and hermeneutic as a strategic method for understanding texts whose meaning must be interpreted. The results of the study indicate: there are forms of oratorical, deliberative, consultative, casual, intimate registers. The function of the register is to act as an instrument of conative and emotive manipulation to influence, weaken, subdue, and restrain hegemonic control or domination. The register has a symbolic meaning of feudalism relations in the form of a phenomenon in the arena of sociocultural communication practices influenced by the discourse on capitalist cultural domination.

Abstract

The film "Imperfect" (2019) is an Indonesian film that tells the story of the pressure in women's lives related to their body shape. A woman's body that does not conform to developing standards will be pressured to conform to existing standards. Symbolic violence that occurs against women is happening nowadays, and society considers beauty to have an ideal physique, regardless of one's qualities, but women who have an ideal physique are more valued and more attractive. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data collection technique used is observation on imperfect films. To answer this problem, the researcher uses the theoretical approach of critical discourse analysis and symbolic violence from Pierre Bourdieu. The results showed that; 1) discourse about women who have an ideal body, have white skin, are tall, and have straight hair are always considered as women who deserve attention and always get their own privileges; 2) Discourse related to the standard of beauty for women has developed and can lead to symbolic violence because women who do not meet the standards of beauty set above will always be marginalized and compared as a form of symbolic violence.

Abstract

Character Building of Streetscape through Buildings, Pedestrians and Public Art in the R.E. Martadinata Corridor, SurakartaA visual study of the streetscape character of Jalan R.E. Martadinata examines how this main commercial corridor in the Pasar Gede Surakarta area shapes spatial experience through its visual elements. Using a qualitative case study approach, the analysis focused on buildings, roads, sidewalks, urban elements, and public art. Results show the corridor's visual character is formed by the continuity of two-story shop house facades, where approximately 50–55% of second-floor facades retain their original form, creating strong visual rhythm. Conversely, ground floors have undergone intensive commercial modifications, producing heterogeneous visual variations. Sidewalks function as active visual spaces, particularly after the 2012 revitalization introducing 12 Chinese zodiac motifs and Javanese roof symbols. Public art—including lanterns, coin ornaments, and festival decorations—serves as marker elements reinforcing area identity. Overall, the streetscape's visual character results from interactions between tradition, modernization, and cultural expression.
