Abstract

This research aimed to find out women’s language features that used by female characters in Bridgerton series and how expressions affect in women language. This research used Lakoff’s theory (1975) on women’s language features and Baker’s theory (2001) on semiotic channels. This research was using descriptive qualitative method and used note-taking as a technique to find the data. There were nine out of ten types of women language features used by female characters in Bridgerton Series. From ten women’s language features mentioned by Lakoff (1975), only nine women's language features appeared in Bridgerton series. Based on the research, lexical hedges or filler became the dominant type of women’s language features uttered in this drama, From ten women’s language features mentioned by Lakoff (1975), only nine women's language features appeared in Bridgerton series. They are lexical hedges or fillers (34), tag question (4), rising intonation on declaratives (16), empty adjectives (11), intensifiers (5), hypercorrect grammar (4), super polite forms (7), avoid to use strong or swear words (9), and emphatic stress (7). The lexical hedges or fillers feature is most often used by the female characters in this drama, because they need time to express their feelings so that the conversation keep going.

Abstract

Abstract. This study, titled Translation Shifts in The Crown Netflix Series, aims to identify various types of translation shifts and assess the functional equivalence of these shifts within the context of the Netflix series The Crown. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing ten episodes from one season as the primary data. Data collection focused on examining the translated texts accompanying each episode. The analysis is grounded in Catford's theory of translation shifts, which categorizes shifts into two main types: level and category shifts, further subdivided into structure, unit, class, and intra-system shifts. Additionally, the study applies Nida and Taber's functional equivalence theory, distinguishing between formal and dynamic equivalence. The findings reveal 100 level shifts and a significant occurrence of category shifts, with 120 structure shifts, 40 class shifts, 100 unit shifts, and 60 intra-system shifts. Formal equivalence emerged as the most frequently identified type among the translation shifts. The results provide critical global implications for translation practices in media, particularly highlighting the balance between preserving original meanings and adapting content for target audiences across different cultural and linguistic contexts. This research underscores the need for nuanced translation strategies in globally distributed media content. Keywords: Functional equivalence, Qualitative analysis, Translation shifts

Abstract

This research investigated the translation strategies used to translate Indonesian food menus into English at 5-star hotel restaurants in Bali. It also explored the use of cultural-specific items (CSIs) in these translations. The study employed a qualitative research method, gathering data from the official websites of six different 5-star restaurants in Bali. The primary theoretical framework was Beekman and Callow's "Lexical Equivalence When Things or Events Are Unknown in the Receptor Language" (1974). Additionally, Tang Yingmin's (1981) theory on Cultural-Specific Items (CSIs) was applied to identify and categorize the types of CSIs found in the translations. The findings indicated that the most frequently used translation approach was Equivalence by Modifying a Generic Word, followed by Equivalence by Cultural Substitution and Equivalence by Using a Loan Word. Among the CSIs, ingredients were the most commonly represented category, accounting for 35% of the total. Furthermore, the data revealed that translators not only translated the names of main dishes but also provided additional details about side dishes.

Abstract

This research investigates the translation strategies in the bilingual cookbook "Resep Masakan Indonesia di 5 Benua," focusing on Indonesian culinary terms translated into English. The study aims to identify translation techniques, apply Cultural-Specific Items (CSI), and evaluate functional equivalence between Bahasa Indonesia and English. Data were collected from the cookbook using a descriptive qualitative method. The analysis categorized translation techniques based on Newmark's (1998) Molina and Albir's (2002) framework, identified CSIs per Menu, and evaluated functional equivalence using Nida and Taber's theory. Data collection involved reading and categorizing recipes, noting translation techniques, and analyzing CSIs and functional equivalence. Results show Transference as the most dominant technique (53.57%), preserving original Indonesian terms for cultural authenticity. Literal Translation was used in 46.43% of cases for precise translations. Ingredients were the most frequent CSI (82.14%), emphasizing their importance in Indonesian cuisine. Functional equivalence analysis showed a higher use of Formal Equivalence (67.48%) over Dynamic Equivalence (32.52%), indicating a preference for maintaining original structure and terminology. This study highlights the importance of balancing accuracy and cultural adaptation in culinary Translation to maintain recipe authenticity while ensuring comprehensibility. The findings contribute to understanding translation strategies in culinary contexts, emphasizing the challenges and solutions in preserving cultural heritage through language.

Abstract

Kabupaten Gianyar khususnya di Desa Belega, Kecamatan Blahbatuh,  sebagai sentra penghasil kerajinan dari bambu, merupakan ciri khas dari desa ini, sehingga mendapat julukan Desa Bambu. Salah satu pengerajin bambu yang berasal dari desa tersebut adalah Bapak I Nyoman Sudiarta dengan spesifikasi produk adalah furniture seperti set kursi, roomdivider (sekat ruangan), hanger dan bale bambu. Terdapat beberapa permasalahan terkait dengan pengelolaan manajemen usaha dari usaha yang ditekuni dari tahun 2000an tersebut, yaitu belum melakukan pencatatan keuangan, belum memiliki sistem promosi untuk memasarkan produknya dan banyak peralatan produksi yang kondisinya sudah rusak. Jenis kegiatan yang dilakukan untuk membantu pengerajin adalah memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan pencatatan keuangan sederhana dan pemasaran serta pengadaan beberapa peralatan baru. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah meningkatkan pemahaman mitra terkait pencatatan keuangan usaha dan pemasaran, serta meningkatkan kapasitas produksi usahanya. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah terdapat peningkatan aset, omset usaha, jumlah produksi serta peningkatan jumlah tenaga kerja.

Abstract

Tukang banten atau disebut juga Sarathi banten adalah seseorang yang memiliki kewajiban serta tanggung jawab untuk mempersiapkan sarana persembahan terkait dengan upacara yang dilaksanakan oleh umat Hindu. Ibu Dewa Ayu Astiti adalah salah satu penjual banten sekaligus sebagai Sarathi atau tukang banten,  yang sudah ditekuni sejak  tahun 2012  berlokasi di desa Kapal, kecamatan Mengwi, kabupaten Badung, Terdapat beberapa permasalahan mitra terkait dengan pengelolaan manajemen usaha, yaitu belum melakukan pencatatan keuangan, belum memiliki sistem promosi untuk memasarkan produknya, dan lay out untuk menata banten belum teratur. Jenis kegiatan yang dilakukan untuk membantu Sarathi adalah memberikan pelatihan dan pendampingan pencatatan keuangan sederhana dan pendampingan dalam pemasaran produk serta membantu pengadaan sarana prasarana yang dibutuhkan. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah meningkatkan pemahaman mitra terkait pencatatan keuangan usaha dan pemasaran, serta meningkatkan kapasitas produksi usahanya. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah terdapat peningkatan aset, omset usaha, jumlah produksi serta peningkatan jumlah tenaga kerja.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian audiovisual (film) tidak hanya sebatas analisis tentang strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan ataupun ideologi yang diterapkan di film saja, tetapi juga mengenai makna yang terkandung di dalamnya serta bagaimana aspek makna tersebut dapat tersampaikan dengan baik melalui bahasa verbal dan nonverbal yang terdiri dari empat aspek yaitu: gambar, tulisan (teks alih bahasa), efek suara, dan ujaran secara sekaligus. Makna dikaji dari makna verbal dan makna tanda nonverbal untuk melihat bagaimana penyampaian makna dalam sebuah film kepada penonton secara utuh karena pada dasarnya bahasa verbal dan nonverbal memiliki keunikan tersendiri dalam proses penyampaian makna. Kajian ini secara tidak langsung juga menganalisis sinkronisasi bahasa verbal dan nonverbal dalam film tersebut. Adapun data penelitian yang dipilih adalah film dengan genre horor “Final Destination 5” karena ditemukan variasi bahasa nonverbal (gambar dan efek suara) dalam penyampaian makna kepada penonton, misalnya jika kematian datang maka akan tersirat tanda-tanda yang dapat dilihat penonton sebelum kejadian tragis terjadi. Penelitian ini diawali dengan menyimak film tersebut yang dilanjutkan dengan pengumpulan data melalui software video remaker AVS untuk mendapatkan teks alih bahasa secara detail serta digunakan teknik rekam layar untuk pengumpulan data aspek visual atau gambar. Hasil penelitian ini nantinya dapat berguna bagi para peneliti audiovisual (film) dalam menghasilkan sebuah kajian di bidang makna.

Abstract

The title of this research is Translation Strategies of English Idiomatic Expression in Elemental: Force of Nature movie. This research aimed at discuss about types of idiomatic expression and strategies used by the translator to translate “Elemental: Force of Nature” movie subtitle. The method used in the research was descriptive qualitative method. This study was carried out on fifteen idioms found in the subtitle Elemental: Forces of Nature movie. These idioms were analyzed using McCharty and O’Dell’s (2011) types of idioms theory and Baker’s (1992) strategies for translating idioms. The result of this research showed that: Firstly, there are five types of idioms found in the subtitle. However, idiom type prepositional phrases were the most used idiom types. There are 5 prepositional phrases, 4 idioms type verb + object, 2 compound idiom, 2 simile and 2 whole clause and sentence whereas the idioms types of binomials and trinomial was documented as non-applicable types of idioms. The researcher found all the types of idiomatic translation strategy, they are 2 translation using similar meaning and form, 2 translation similar meaning but dissimilar form, 1 translation by paraphrase and 1 translation by omission.

Abstract

The paper investigates the Balinese swear word kleng and its variations used by teenagers in Denpasar. They use this word in various types whose functions differ depending on the context of the situation. Basically, kleng is a swear word used to insult others or show anger. However, some people can use this word to show intimacy toward others and humour. This study investigates variations of the word kleng and its flexibility used by the young generation in Denpasar based on linguistic anthropology. This research is descriptive research through a qualitative approach. The data were collected from conversations of the young generation in several coffee shops in Denpasar. Besides, the social media platforms, namely Instagram and Tiktok, were also used as secondary data. Based on the results, this research found several variations of the word kleng, including naskleng, kle, klieng, klie, nanas klengkeng leci, and klek. These variations reflect psychological, social, and linguistic functions. This research underscores language's importance in reflecting evolving cultures, feelings, and social dynamics, offering insights into an ever-changing society.

Abstract

Examines the film "The Big 4" Indonesia, outlining insights from the cultural perspective and the use of taboo words within the Indonesian context that most other research studies have ignored in their focus on Western movies and media. This study classifies taboo words into comprehensive divisions of form and functions based on established theories of sociolinguistic views by Wardhaugh (2006) and Batistella (2005). In this light, the following study unveiled a critical understanding of their use and perception within the Indonesian media. Further, the multilingual nature of the research highlights the existence of these tabooed words in Indonesian and English, Spanish, Hokkien, and Javanese languages, thus establishing the diversity of language use in Indonesian movies. The data were recorded through documentation by watching the film over Netflix, while taking notes during viewing of all expressions used with taboo words. Based on the data collection, there are 50 forms of taboo words found and used in the Indonesian film 'The Big 4' they are categorized into 17 data related to sex, 5 data related to death, 2 data related to excretion, 6 data related to bodily function; 7 data related to animals; 3 data related to cultural matters; and 10 data related to epithet. Then, the functions of using taboo words in the Indonesian film 'The Big 4' by Timo Tjahjanto are to draw attention to oneself, show contempt, be provocative, and mock authority. Almost all the players do all of them. In addition, implications of the findings point to other aspects that need further investigations on code-mixing, code-switching, and figurative language in Indonesian movies, which would open new research windows and urge more general analyses on the variation of languages in digital and media contexts. These unique features enhance our knowledge about the use of taboo language in Indonesian cinema and its broader implications.
