Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the quality of idiom translation in a novel entitled “Landline” by Rainbow Rowell. By referring to Nababan’s Translation Quality Assessment model (2012), this study assessed the idioms’ translation according to the degree of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The data analyzed in this study include the idioms and Indonesian translations, as well as the assessment result made by three expert assessors. Those idioms were identified and grouped based on the classification adapted from Palmer (1981). There are 37 idioms found, which consist of 2 idioms that can undergo syntactic changes, 10 idioms with syntactic limitation, 10 frozen idioms, 5 partial idioms, and 10 phrasal verbs. The findings show that the Indonesian translation of those idioms generally has a high-quality level, especially those which were translated into equivalent idioms in the target language. Paraphrasing also plays a major role as a translation strategy used by the translator. However, this strategy may sometimes lead to distortion of the original message in the target language.

Abstract

Abstract

Journalistic text plays an important role in information transfer such as the latest events, issues, or problems from parts of the world. With the rapid development of digital platforms, journalistic can be accessed easily through the internet, which arouses the need for translation as a means to bridge understanding between languages. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate students’ strategies and errors in journalistic text translation. By referring to translation strategies adapted from Newmark (1988), Hoed (2006), Baker (2011), the target text was analyzed based on several strategies including transference, calque, naturalization, accepted translation, paraphrase, modulation, transposition, cultural equivalence, addition, omission, and explication. Based on the translation quality assessment model adapted from Nababan et al. (2012), the translations made by the students have decent quality for accuracy and a medium level of competence in producing acceptable translations. However, the translation products have a high degree of readability which means they are easy to understand. Based on the classification proposed by Sukur et al. (2020), the finding shows that the errors made by the students in translating journalistic texts include a lack of cultural background knowledge, situation concordance, use of unsuitable words to the context, and failure to understand speech act. With some suggestions to overcome those challenges, this study is expected to provide pedagogical insight for translation courses regarding the practice of journalistic translation.

Abstract

This research article provides an examination of the challenges faced by students during the composition of procedure texts. It aims to uncover factors influencing students' proficiency. Utilizing thematic analysis, we analyzed students' written texts and conducted interviews with junior high school English teachers and students, providing a holistic perspective.   Four significant areas of difficulty were identified: minimal word and phrase variations, lack of clarity and precision, ignorance of writing mechanisms, and challenges with grammar and spelling. These challenges provided insights into the recurring patterns of students"™ writing. Factors contributing to these difficulties included motivational factors, language environment, language proficiency, and formal presentation aspects. Student motivation to write and seek comments was hindered by low intrinsic motivation. Students' writing talents were also shaped by language exposure and proficiency, which varied by background and experience. Additionally, formal presentation characteristics and technology-based teaching strategy restrictions underlined the need for improved infrastructure to accommodate various and engaging teaching methods. In conclusion, the research sheds light on the intricate landscape of students' struggles in composing texts and underscores the urgency of providing tailored teaching strategies to address these challenges effectively while also keeping the influencing factors in consideration.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by EFL students in translating cooking recipes. It was conducted on sixth-semester students from class B in the translation course. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with thematic analysis to identify and interpret key patterns within the data. Data collection was carried out through a triangulation approach, combining mixed-method questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed four main themes and one additional theme related to the students’ difficulties: (1) vocabulary-related challenges, (2) grammar and equivalence issues, (3) translation quality and self-confidence, (4) limited exposure and cultural context, and (5) translation methods and procedures as an additional theme. These challenges reflect the complexity of translating procedural texts, especially recipes, which often include culturally bound terms, specific measurements, and imperative instructions. The study concludes that translating recipes presents significant linguistic and contextual challenges for EFL students. It suggests the need for more targeted strategies and exposure to authentic materials in translation to help students improve their translation and overcome practical difficulties in translating specialized texts like recipes.

Abstract

The prevalence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in this modern era has been one of the major interests in translation studies. The ability of AI to produce human-like translations has become an ongoing discussion among scholars. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the utility of AI in providing alternatives for journalistic text translation results made by English Department students of Universitas Palangka Raya during a Translation Course. Given the communicative nature of journalistic texts, this study explores how culturally distinctive features, such as idioms, collocations, traditional language nuances, and organization names, are translated from Indonesian into English. By referring to translation strategies adapted from Newmark (1988), Hoed (2006), and Baker (2011), translation results made by students are compared with those generated by AI technology, i.e. DeepL and ChatGPT. Since creativity is one of the key characteristics of human translation, this study examines whether AI systems can be reliable tools for demonstrating the same creativity level. Translation creativity in this study refers to the ability to select the most effective strategies and wording to produce better translation versions of those culturally distinctive features. This study is expected to shed light on the evolving role of AI in the field of translation.

Abstract

This study aims to design a culturally-based English textbook for Performing Arts Education students. The research applies Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to the ADDIE framework to improve English competence and local culture appreciation. A needs analysis of 36 students found that 82.35% have basic English skills and low speaking confidence. Multimedia elements, culturally relevant themes, and practical ways integrating English learning to artistic surroundings were popular with students. Experts validated content relevancy and linguistic accuracy but suggested simplifying idioms and adding cultural examples for accessibility. Two chapters' initial trials were moderately effective, scoring 3.39 for relevance and 3.89 for clarity. Changes improved cultural integration and interactivity. Two trials with six amended chapters showed considerable gains in clarity and relevance, scoring 4.53 and 4.17, respectively. Contextual vocabulary, realistic grammar exercises, and local-global cultural balance impressed students. The study found that CRP and CLIL in ESP materials improve English and cultural awareness. Long-term effects and digital tools for accessibility and interaction should be further explored.
