Abstract

Transactional sex has been recognized as a significant element hindering the reduction of drug usage in Papua, Indonesia. The national objective for drug usage reduction was established at 1.67% for 2024; nevertheless, this target remains unfulfilled. This research investigated the correlation between transactional sex and substance abuse among female and adolescent prisoners in Papua Province. A case-control approach was utilized, employing primary data gathered from May to September 2023 at the Special Correctional Institution for Juveniles (LPKA) and the Women’s Correctional Institution (LPP) in Papua. The research population consisted of 85 offenders incarcerated from 2021 to 2023. A total of 26 cases (drug users) and 59 controls (non-users) were included using total sampling, in a 1:2 ratio. Data were gathered using a modified version of the Rapid Survey Questionnaire on Injecting Drug User Behavior (SCP Penasun). Analysis was conducted using STATA version 14, employing multivariate logistic regression to identify related factors. In all, 30.6% of participants were identified as drug users according to case-control selection, rather than as an estimation of population-level prevalence. Inmates who indicated participation in transactional sex exhibited increased odds of drug acquisition (adjusted OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 0.46–5.39) after controlling for work status, past-year drug usage, and duration of use. The findings suggest a possible trend of heightened drug acquisition among inmates engaged in transactional sex, although the correlation remains ambiguous. Consequently, integrated therapies targeting both substance use and sexual risk behaviors are crucial in custodial environments.

Abstract

Abstract

Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) remains a health problem found in tropical countries, especially Indonesia, where humidity supports the development of worm parasites. This study aimed to determine the relationship between personal hygiene and worm infections among students of SD Negeri Inpres 1 Apo, Jayapura City. This analytical observational study used a cross-sectional design with a population of 167 and a sample of 97 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Inclusion criteria were fifth and sixth grade students willing to participate and submit faecal samples; absent or sick students were excluded. Data were collected using questionnaires and faecal examinations through the direct method at the Jayapura Health Polytechnic Laboratory. Data were analysed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test (α < 0.05). Results showed that most respondents were 11 years old (45.4%), female (55.7%), class VI B students (24%), and 47.4% tested positive helminth infection. Bivariate analysis found no significant relationship between knowledge, handwashing, footwear use, nail hygiene, snack hygiene, or defecation habits and helminth infection (p > 0.05). Although no significant association was found, good personal hygiene remains essential to prevent STH. Education from schools and parents is crucial to improve children’s hygiene practices.

Abstract

As one of the Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), Low Back Pain (LBP) is the most prevalent case and a serious problem experienced by both developed and developing countries such as Indonesia. This pain is not only felt by adults but also by university students. This study aims to examine the prevalence and risk factors influencing the occurrence of LBP. The research method used a cross-sectional design with binary logistic regression tests. Data collection was carried out through direct measurements and surveys using questionnaires among students of the Public Health Department at Cenderawasih University, Papua Province, Indonesia. The results of this study showed that the prevalence of LBP complaints among students was 74%, and only one variable significantly influenced the occurrence of LBP, which was Gender, with a p-value of 0.019 and an Odds Ratio of 2.201 (95% CI: 1.136-4.263). Other variables such as the way of carrying a bag and the weight of the bag were nearly significant, both receiving a p-value of 0.090, with an Odds ratio of 1.668 for the way of carrying the bag and 1.645 for the weight of the bag. This study is expected to serve as a basis for future research to assess the influence of other variables on the incidence of LBP.
