Abstract

Textile industry waste can pollute the aquatic environment because it contains dye contaminants with very stable properties that are difficult to degrade naturally. However, dye contaminants degradation can be carried out by photodegradation using ZnO-Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposite photocatalysts. This study aims to synthesize ZnO-Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposite through a sonochemical method. Then measure their photocatalytic activity in methylene blue degradation. The best ZnO-Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposite is made of ZnO:Fe3O4 mass ratio of 4:1 with a crystal size of 31.058 nm, a hexagonal crystal phase and a particle size of 173.23 nm. The ZnO-Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposites (4:1) provides optimum degradation capacity of methylene blue under halogen lamp irradiation of 99.56 mg/g at pH 13. Furthermore, the ZnO-Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposites had good stability in 10 cycles reaction with a degradation capacity of 99.24-99.75 mg/g. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by ZnO-Fe3O4 occurs through the formation of free radical species with hydroxyl radicals as the dominant species that play an important role in the degradation process. Abstract

Methylene blue is widely used in the textile industry and is difficult to degrade naturally because of its heterocyclic aromatic structure. One technique that can be used to degrade methylene blue is through a photocatalytic process using ZnO nanoparticles. This study aims to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles using Lidah mertua extract (Sansevieria trifasciata) as a capping agent by the sol-gel method, and determine the characteristics and stability of ZnO nanoparticles in methylene blue photodegradation. The synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles begins with drying Lidah mertua, grinding it, and then extracting it using distilled water. Furthermore, the extract was reacted with Zn(CH3COO)2.2H2O 0.15 M at pH 8. The extract was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and the ZnO nanoparticles were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) DRS, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Lidah mertua extract has OH (hydroxyl), CN, CH, and C=C functional groups. The obtained ZnO nanoparticles have a crystal size of 19.324 nm. The crystalline phase is hexagonal; the morphology is spherical, with a particle size of 79.153 nm and a band gap energy of 3.21 eV. ZnO nanoparticles exhibited a methylene blue decolorization of 98.50% through 43.41% by adsorption and 55.09% by photocatalytic mechanism. ZnO nanoparticles showed good stability for a three-cycle reaction. Copyright © 2023 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Abstract

A novel responsive visible light Cr-based MOF, Cr-PTC-HIna, was synthesized using the solvothermal method. Cr-PTC-HIna peaks were observed at 2θ = 9.04°, 12.71°, 14.88°, 25,48°, 27.72°, 28.97°, and 43.60° with a crystal size of 21 nm. Band gap energy achieved from the Cr-PTC HIna was 2.05 eV. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis obtained a 3D structural morphology of MOFs Cr-PTC-HIna with a cylindrical tube shape and a particle size of 251.45 nm. Cr-PTC-HIna gave the optimum methylene blue degradation at pH of 7 under 250 watts mercury lamp irradiation for 180 minutes with degradation capacity of 95.40 mg/g. Electron holes and hydroxyl radicals were found as the dominant species contributing to methylene blue degradation. Copyright © 2022 by Authors, Published by BCREC Group. Abstract

Methylene blue pollutants can be treated by photocatalytic methods using metal oxide-based semiconductor materials and metal organic framework (MOF). These two materials are often coupled into a composite to improve their physicochemical properties and catalytic activity. This research focuses on the synthesis of composites based on Cr-PTC MOF, ZnO, and Fe3O4 by the sonochemical method. The obtained composites were characterized and tested for catalytic activity in methylene blue pollutant degradation in an aqueous system under acidic conditions (pH = 5). Our investigation shows that the Cr-PTC@Fe3O4 composite possesses the lowest band gap energy of 1.86 eV and achieves the highest photocatalytic activity in methylene blue degradation at solution pH = 5, with a percent degradation of 84.36%. The sonochemical incorporation of Fe3O4 and Cr-PTC MOF is able to fabricate materials in a short time with better photocatalytic activity in degrading methylene blue than the single materials. Abstract

Methylene blue wastewater from the paper, clothing, and textile industries can adversely affect aquatic ecosystems if improperly treated. One method to treat methylene blue pollutants in sewage is through photocatalysis techniques using magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) nanoparticle-based semiconductors. The MgFe2O4 is effective for methylene blue degradation because it is stable in aqueous systems, inexpensive, and has good photocatalytic activity. This study aims to synthesize MgFe2O4 nanoparticles with pumpkin seed extract (Cucurbita moschata) as a capping agent through a hydrothermal method. Characterization results show that MgFe2O4 nanoparticles synthesized with the addition of 3 mL pumpkin seed extract have a crystal size of 3.87 nm, cubic spinel structure, average particle size of 29 nm, and band gap energy value of 1.94 eV. The MgFe2O4 nanoparticles produced optimum degradation efficiency under mercury lamp irradiation with a degradation capacity of 391.98 mg/g at pH 12. Abstract

Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet morphology possess unique surface characteristics, making them highly favourable for photocatalytic applications. This study synthesised Cu²⁺-based MOF nanosheets using a modified three-layer method. This approach is relatively simple, energy-efficient, and qualifies as a green synthesis method. The MOFs were prepared from copper(II) nitrate trihydrate (Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O) as the metal precursor and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H₂BDC) as the organic linker, aiming to evaluate their photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation. The resulting Cu-BDC nanosheets displayed characteristic FTIR absorption bands at 1501 and 1547 cm⁻¹ corresponding to symmetric and asymmetric C=O stretching, 1394 cm⁻¹ for C–O stretching, and peaks at 751 and 569 cm⁻¹ associated with Cu–O vibrations. The XRD analysis revealed four sharp peaks at 2θ values of 8.2°, 10.2°, 16.1°, and 34.1°, indicating good crystallinity with a calculated crystallite size of 22.03 nm, and the bandgap energy is 3.89 eV. Cu-BDC nanosheets exhibit a thin sheet morphology with elemental compositions of carbon 73.08%, oxygen 11.19%, and copper 15.73%. Cu-BDC nanosheets exhibit optimal degradation activity at pH 13, with an optimal catalyst dose of 5 mg and an initial dye concentration of 20 ppm, achieving a degradation capacity of 98.62 mg/g after 120 minutes of reaction.
