Abstract

This study explores the construction of meaning through verbal and non-verbal signs in the Dior Sauvage advertisement featuring Johnny Depp. The research is grounded in Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, which examines meaning at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The study addresses how linguistic and visual elements within the advertisement construct and reinforce representations of masculinity. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the data were collected from selected scenes focusing on verbal signs, such as brand naming and lexical choices, as well as non-verbal signs, including color, setting, costume, and body language. The findings reveal that the advertisement constructs masculinity through signs associated with strength, mystery, freedom, and independence. At the mythological level, the advertisement reinforces an ideological representation of ideal masculinity as dominant, emotionally restrained, and deeply connected to nature. The study concludes that meaning in advertising is not naturally inherent but socially and culturally produced through interconnected systems of signs that shape audience perceptions and ideological understanding.

Abstract

Mastering a foreign language requires not only linguistic skills but also the development of intercultural competence. This study aims to analyze the use of the German children's novel entitled Emil und die Detektive by Erich Kästner as a medium for developing students' intercultural competence in German language learning in Indonesia. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with thematic analysis of literary works. Data in the form of narratives, dialogues, and character actions were collected through listening and note-taking, then analyzed using literary analysis with reference to Michael Byram's Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) framework. Data validity was strengthened through triangulation of sources and theories. The results of the study indicate that the novel Emil und die Detektive embodies values of intercultural understanding, such as independence, solidarity, honesty, vigilance, and equal relations between children and adults. These values have the potential to be integrated into German language learning through discussion activities, interpretive writing, and literary appreciation. Therefore, language learning is not only oriented towards linguistic mastery but also contributes to the development of empathy, interpretation skills, cross-cultural interaction, and critical cultural awareness in line with Byram's ICC model.

Abstract

This thesis examines what are the impacts of climate change on nature as portrayed in the young adult novel Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. The focus of this research is to find out the impact of sudden climate change caused by the “Moon Crush” incident. Ecocriticism is applied as the primary theoretical framework, particularly Greg Garrard’s ecocriticism concept of “Apocalypse”. A qualitative method is applied, using the novel as the main data source and other relevant sources as the secondary data. As a result of the research, the writers found that Life As We Knew It effectively illustrates the potential real-life outcomes of a “Moon Crush,” showing a strong connection to scientific data. This research concludes that the moon has a significant influence on the Earth; if the moon were to leave its orbit, the Earth would experience disasters such as massive tsunamis and extreme climate changes. The impacts of climate change depicted in this novel include drastic temperature drops, crop failures, and resource scarcity. The writers emphasize that humans and nature are mutually dependent. Humans rely on nature for their survival, while nature is affected by human activities, which can either harm or help maintain the balance of the ecosystem.
