Abstract

The National Schools Debating Championship (NSDC) is among the most popular debate competitions. Schools in Indonesia strive to prepare their best students for this prestigious competition. One high school in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, also prepares its students to participate in this prestigious event. To this end, the school formed an English Debate Club (EDC). However, the enthusiasm of EDC members in practising tends to be inconsistent, which impacts the effectiveness of their preparation. In response to this problem, a team of lecturer and students from the English Education Study Program, Palangka Raya University, implemented a coaching program to increase the enthusiasm, confidence, and debating skills of EDC members. The coaching activities were conducted in four sessions, covering motion analysis training, case studies, and debate practice, with guidance from an outstanding student representing the university in the National University Debating Championship (NUDC) at the national level. Qualitative questionnaire results indicated increased enthusiasm and self-confidence among EDC members during training sessions and improved understanding of debate strategies. This initiative demonstrates that coaching based on the direct experience of a high-achieving debater can serve as an effective strategy for developing debate clubs in secondary schools.Keywords: enthusiasm; coaching program; debate strategy; self-confidence; debate club Abstrak: National Schools Debating Championship (NSDC) merupakan salah satu kompetisi debat yang paling populer. Sekolah di Indonesia berusaha mempersiapkan potensi terbaiknya untuk mengikuti kompetisi bergengsi ini. Salah satu sekolah menengah atas di Palangka Raya, Kalimantan Tengah, juga mempersiapkan para siswanya untuk mengikuti ajang bergengsi tersebut. Untuk itu, sekolah membentuk English Debate Club (EDC). Namun, antusiasme anggota EDC dalam berlatih cenderung tidak konsisten, yang berdampak pada efektivitas persiapan mereka. Menanggapi permasalahan tersebut, tim dosen dan mahasiswa dari Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Palangka Raya melaksanakan program pendampingan guna meningkatkan antusiasme, percaya diri dan kemampuan debat para anggota EDC. Kegiatan pendampingan dilakukan dalam empat sesi pertemuan, yang mencakup pelatihan analisis mosi, pembedahan kasus, serta praktik debat, dengan bimbingan dari mahasiswa berprestasi yang pernah mewakili universitas dalam ajang National University Debating Championship (NUDC) tingkat nasional. Hasil survei menunjukkan peningkatan antusiasme dan kepercayaan diri anggota EDC dalam mengikuti latihan, serta pemahaman yang lebih baik terhadap strategi debat. Kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa pendampingan berbasis pengalaman langsung dari mahasiswa debat berprestasi dapat menjadi strategi efektif dalam membina klub debat di sekolah menengah.Kata kunci: antusiasme; program pendampingan; strategi debat; percaya diri; klub debat

Abstract

Program English Camp merupakan upaya strategis yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris melalui pendekatan pembelajaran yang terstruktur, kontekstual, relevan, dan interaktif. Program ini berangkat dari permasalahan rendahnya kesadaran siswa terhadap pentingnya penguasaan Bahasa Inggris, pengelolaan English Club  yang belum optimal, serta keterbatasan materi dan media pembelajaran yang menarik. Pelaksanaan English Camp dilakukan melalui lima tahapan, yaitu sosialisasi, pembelajaran berbasis modul Speak, Play, and Learn, integrasi teknologi melalui video dan kuis interaktif di LMS Canvas, pendampingan guru melalui co-teaching, serta keberlanjutan program melalui penyediaan perangkat pembelajaran. Hasil pelaksanaan menunjukkan bahwa 27 dari 29 siswa (93%) konsisten mengikuti rangkaian kegiatan dan mayoritas siswa aktif dan senang terlibat dalam sesi tanya jawab, diskusi dan permainan edukatif. Materi, aktivitas, dan media yang variatif serta integrasi unsur teknologi dan gamifikasi terbukti mampu menstimulasi motivasi siswa dengan gaya belajar yang beragam, sehingga menciptakan suasana belajar yang lebih menyenangkan, bermakna, dan memotivasi. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa English Camp efektif dalam meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa dan dapat menjadi strategi alternatif dalam mendukung keberlanjutan kegiatan ekstrakurikuler seperti English Club .

Abstract

This study investigates Indonesian EFL teachers’ perceptions and implementation of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in rural Central Kalimantan. Using a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews, it explores how teachers integrate content, pedagogy, and technology in their classroom practices. The findings show that teachers demonstrate strong confidence in content and technological knowledge, adapting instruction to students’ needs and displaying positive attitudes toward technology integration. However, challenges persist in pedagogical domains, particularly in fostering collaboration, and are compounded by infrastructural limitations, digital inequities, and restrictive institutional policies. This study highlights rural teachers’ adaptive strategies under constrained conditions, expanding TPACK beyond urban settings. The implications call for teacher training that emphasizes pedagogically grounded and context-sensitive approaches, and for policies that strengthen rural digital infrastructure and promote equitable access. Future research should broaden the extent to a broader rural context, include learner perspectives, and examine teachers’ sustainable TPACK development.

Abstract

Developing reading habits is part of empowering education; therefore, reading habits should be instilled from an early age. However, not all children can experience facilities such as reading various types of reading books that suit their interests and preferences, as is the case with children in orphanages. As a response, this community service plays a part in increasing children’s interest in reading. The program we proposed, namely Reading Corner, took place at Imanuel Orphanage in Palangka. The program was carried out by assessing the needs, designing the Reading Corner, and implementing it. Reading Corner serves as a facility for extensive reading at home. Reading Corner allows the children to read various types of books based on their preferences. The result of this program indicated that the children looked enthusiastic about the books as they chose and borrowed the book to read. The closer children are to the books, the more often they will use their time to access and read the books. In line with that, it is expected that the literacy level of Indonesian will increase. Keywords: reading corner; reading interest; reading habit Mengembangkan budaya membaca merupakan bentuk dari penyelenggaraan pendidikan, maka dari itu budaya membaca harus ditanamkan sejak dini pada anak. Namun, tidak semua anak dapat merasakan fasilitas seperti membaca aneka jenis buku bacaan yang sesuai minatnya, seperti halnya anak-anak di panti asuhan. Maka dari itu, kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan minat baca pada anak di Panti Asuhan Imanuel Palangka Raya. Program yang dilaksanakan adalah dengan menyediakan fasilitas Reading Corner atau pojok baca. Adapun tahapan kegiatan mencakup pendataan kebutuhan, perancangan, dan pelaksanaan. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk menghadirkan Reading Corner di panti asuhan guna memberikan akses kepada anak-anak untuk membaca aneka jenis buku yang menarik dan sesuai dengan minat mereka. Respon anak-anak terhadap Reading Corner sangat positif. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari antusiasme mereka dalam memilih dan meminjam buku bacaan. Diharapakan, semakin dekat anak dengan buku-buku bacaan, maka mereka akan lebih sering menggunakan waktunya untuk mengakses dan membaca buku-buku tersebut. Sejalan dengan itu, kami mengharapkan agar tingkat literasi anak-anak Indonesia semakin meningkat.Kata kunci: kebiasaan membaca; minat baca; pojok baca; Reading Corner

Abstract

Vocational High School (SMK) is one of the most popular choices for students in Indonesia due to its focus on work preparation for students. Therefore, students need to be equipped with knowledge and abilities that are relevant to their department. To fulfill this, all subjects, including English, are designed to support their knowledge in their future field of work. In this case, the researchers examined student perceptions towards English General Purposes (EGP) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) as well as the methods applied by teachers in ESP learning. In addition, this study also analyzed students’ aspirations related to their study program or outside the study program. This research employed quantitative approach. The Participant of this research was 102 students from class XI of Skin and Hair Beauty Department and also XI Fashion Design and Production Department of SMK Negeri 3 Palangka Raya. The results show that students agree that EGP (67.36%) and ESP (74.93%) can support their future careers. This is also supported by the ESP learning method from teachers at 75.65%. For career aspirations, 50.73% of VHS students have career aspirations related to their study program. While 56.72% have career aspirations outside their study program.

Abstract

Penguasaan kosakata merupakan dasar penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di tingkat sekolah dasar. Namun, siswa SDN 1 Pulau Mambulau masih menghadapi kendala dalam memahami dan mengingat kosakata akibat metode pembelajaran yang monoton. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa melalui penerapan permainan Spelling Bee sebagai bentuk Game-Based Learning (GBL). Metode yang digunakan adalah Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) yang melibatkan siswa secara aktif dalam proses pembelajaran. Kegiatan dilaksanakan selama tiga kali pertemuan dengan tahapan pengenalan alfabet, pengenalan kosakata benda di kelas, dan pelaksanaan permainan Spelling Bee. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan rata-rata nilai siswa dari 34,38 pada pre-test menjadi 74,38 pada post-test, serta peningkatan motivasi, keaktifan, dan kepercayaan diri siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa metode permainan Spelling Bee efektif dalam memperkuat penguasaan kosakata sekaligus menciptakan suasana belajar yang menyenangkan dan interaktif bagi siswa sekolah dasar.
