Abstract

Along with the advancement of modern times and technology, the metal sector plays a critical role in sustaining present growth. The industry's increased competitiveness has hampered the development of numerous small-scale metal casting industries. A crucible made of local graphite can only be used not more than ten melting cycles. This research aims to examine the influence of firing temperature on the density, porosity, impact strength, and macrostructure of graphite, kaolin and castable cement crucible materials. This research applies experiment method at various firing temperature, i.e. 850 °C, 900 °C, 950 °C, 1000 °C and 1050 °C. The crucible materials are made of graphite, kaolin, and castable cement. The firing process employs a heating rate of 5 °C/min and a holding time 2 hours. The results show that firing temperature influences the density, porosity, impact strength and macrostructure of crucible. The highest density at 1.86 grams/cm3 was obtained at the firing temperature of 1050 °C. The lowest porosity value of 41% was attained at firing temperature of 1050 °C. However, this value was still below the crucible index criterion. The highest impact strength of 0.003249 Joule/mm2 occurred for firing temperature of 1050 °C.

Abstract

Cow's milk provides essential human nutrients, including calcium, protein, and minerals. However, it is highly susceptible to bacterial contamination, which leads to rapid spoilage. Pasteurization is the most common method to process cow's milk, effectively reducing microbial levels. However, some heat-resistant bacteria can survive the pasteurization process, limiting its effectiveness in ensuring long-term milk safety. This study investigates the use of chemical engineering technology by combining pasteurization and UV-C radiation methods, either sequentially or simultaneously, to improve the effectiveness of milk sterilization. The use of combined techniques aims to leverage the strengths of both processes, achieving superior microbial reduction and extending milk shelf life. Different operating temperatures and radiation durations were tested to identify optimal processing conditions. The findings revealed that this combined approach achieved a significant bacterial reduction of 99.95%, decreasing the microbial count from an initial 1.9 × 10⁶ cfu/mL to 7.0 × 10² cfu/mL. Moreover, the shelf life of the milk was extended to five months, demonstrating the effectiveness of the hybrid method. The study also monitored the milk's acidity (pH) throughout the process, which remained within optimal conditions of 6.5 to 6.8. This indicates that the combined treatment does not compromise milk quality. Integrating pasteurization with germicidal UV-C radiation offers a promising alternative for milk sterilization, improving microbial control and significantly increasing the shelf life of cow's milk. The results suggest that this dual-method approach could be a valuable advancement in dairy processing, enhancing both safety and efficiency in the production and preservation of milk.

Abstract

To minimize potential health hazards, there is awareness to avoid asbestos fibers in brake pads. Therefore, this study aims to produce composite brake pads using Elaeocarpus ganitrus seed powder as a substitute for asbestos. The composition of Elaeocarpus ganitrus seed powder was varied from 8%, 10%, and 12% by weight. The properties of the brake pads, including their morphology, physical characteristics, mechanical performance, and wear behavior, were thoroughly investigated and analyzed. The experimental results showed a positive correlation between the addition of 12% by weight of Elaeocarpus ganitrus and the increase in the density and hardness of the resulting sample. In addition, wear resistance increases with increasing percentage of Elaeocarpus ganitrus. Samples containing 12% by weight of Elaeocarpus ganitrus seed powder gave better properties compared to other composite samples. The research findings indicate that Elaeocarpus ganitrus particles can be an alternative to asbestos in the manufacture of brake pads.
