Abstract

This study examines students’ performance in the TOEFL listening comprehension test, focusing on their strengths and weaknesses across three sections: short conversations (Part A), long conversations (Part B), and short talks (Part C). There are 45 students registered in the course “Aplikasi Pendidikan Bahasa dalam Pembelajaran PJOK” on the odd semester in the 2024/2025 academic year participated in this study. The participants are chosen because the course integrates TOEFL-based language instruction, as outlined in the semester learning plan (RPS), where one of the students’ difficulties is listening skills. A descriptive quantitative research design was conducted over a three-week study period, with listening tests administered weekly during three class meetings. The tests used questions adopted from standardized TOEFL practice materials, which were selected based on their alignment with the test's objectives and validated by experienced English instructors for relevance and difficulty. Data analysis discovered that students consistently performed best in Part C, with average scores increasing from 53% to 65% across three tests, while Part B presented the most significant challenges, with scores improving from 43% to 54%. Part A showed moderate performance, with scores rising from 49% to 60%. These results show that there is also an improvement on each part of the test, attributed to repeated exposure to the test format and the development of listening strategies. However, the persistent difficulty in Part B suggests the need for targeted instructional interventions to address challenges in extended dialogues. It can be concluded that the students demonstrated general improvement in TOEFL listening comprehension across all sections. The repeated exposure can be an effective strategy performance in TOEFL listening comprehension.

Abstract

Self-efficacy plays a crucial role in shaping students' motivation and performance, particularly in the context of learning a foreign language such as English. Guided by Bandura’s (1997) social cognitive theory, this study explores Indonesian university students’ self-efficacy beliefs in English learning, with a specific focus on the role of effort-related beliefs. This study aims to explore university students' self-efficacy in English learning by analyzing their beliefs and confidence levels toward their language learning abilities. The respondents consisted of 129 students enrolled in a compulsory General English course in Universitas Negeri Padang, selected from a population of 308 students using a simple random sampling technique. A questionnaire comprising 25 items based on a Likert scale was administered to measure students’ self-efficacy. The validity and reliability of the instrument were confirmed through Pearson Product-Moment correlation and Cronbach’s Alpha (? = 0.7926), indicating strong internal consistency. Data analysis revealed that the average self-efficacy score was 3.29, which falls into the moderate category. The highest-rated statement indicated students' belief that effort leads to improvement, while the lowest-rated item reflected a sense of helplessness regardless of effort. These results suggest that while students believe in their potential to succeed in English learning through hard work, some still struggle with negative self-perceptions. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing students' self-efficacy beliefs to enhance their learning outcomes. Educational interventions that foster self-awareness, goal-setting, and motivational strategies may contribute positively to increasing self-efficacy in language learning. This study contributes to the growth of the literature on EFL self-efficacy in Indonesia. It is suggested that the lecturers to support students’ confidence and autonomy in acquiring English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Physical fitness is essential for the physical and mental development of elementary school students. However, the rising trend of sedentary lifestyles has limited students’ participation in physical activities. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an outbound-based physical activity model in improving the physical fitness of elementary school students. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach was employed. The participants consisted of 100 elementary school students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using physical fitness tests, questionnaires, and observations, and analyzed using paired t-tests and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). The results revealed that students in the experimental group who participated in the outbound program showed a significant improvement in physical fitness compared to those in the control group who received conventional instruction (p < 0.05). Furthermore, students in the experimental group demonstrated higher levels of engagement and motivation toward physical activities. These findings suggest that the outbound-based physical activity model is an effective alternative approach to enhancing physical fitness in elementary school students, while also fostering improvements in social skills and motivation.

This type of research is descriptive. The population and sample of this study were 10 students in biology education semester II of Academic Year 018/2019. Data were collected using a motivational questionnaire consisting of 0 items. The data obtained is processed using simple linear correlation techniques. From the test r obtained by the price of the correlation coefficient r count = 0.3835 and r table = 0.320 then r count> r table means there is a positive and significant relationship of 0.3835. From the t test, it was obtained tcount = .49 and ttable = .02, it means tcount> ttable in the sense that there was a significant relationship between motivation and learning outcomes of biology education students at the university of mahaputra muhammad yamin in the subject of student development in the academic year 018/2019 on a 95% confidence level. The price of the determinant coefficient = 14.71% then the relationship of motivation with learning outcomes is very low. This means that student learning outcomes 14.71% is determined by motivation, the remaining 85.29% is determined by other factors.

Abstract

Problems: Most previous English for Specific Purposes (ESP) studies have focused on general language skills rather than the direct impact of vocabulary mastery on students’ ability to comprehend and physically execute training instructions in real-time sports contexts. This study offers a novel contribution by empirically examining how English vocabulary knowledge enhances understanding and practical performance during sports training sessions. Purpose: This study aims to examine the effect of English vocabulary mastery on the ability of sports students to understand and execute training instructions. Methods: A total of 20 students from a physical education program participated in this quantitative study using a paired sample experimental design. Two instruments were employed: a vocabulary test and a performance-based instruction comprehension test. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, a paired t-test, and simple linear regression. Results: The results showed that the average vocabulary score was 74.45 (SD = 11.71), while the average comprehension and execution score was 76.75 (SD = 11.52). The Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed that the data were normally distributed (p > 0.05). The paired t-test revealed a significant difference between vocabulary mastery and instruction performance, with t(19) = -14.04 and p < 0.001. The regression analysis further showed a strong and significant positive influence of vocabulary mastery on instruction performance (R² = 0.9025; p < 0.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that English vocabulary mastery is crucial in enabling students to comprehend and execute training instructions accurately. This study highlights the importance of integrating sport-specific English vocabulary training into physical education curricula to enhance students’ instructional comprehension and field performance.
