Abstract

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to evaluate the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) module designed to strengthen sports injury management competence among prospective elementary school teachers. Methodology: The research employed a Research and Development design using the ADDIE model, with data collected through expert validation sheets, lecturer and student practicality questionnaires, and pretest–posttest learning outcome tests. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests, and N-Gain analysis with SPSS software. Main Findings: The results showed that the module achieved high expert validity (92%) and strong curriculum alignment (96%). Practicality evaluation indicated very good acceptance from students (88.2%) and lecturers (91.6%). Learning outcomes improved significantly from a pretest mean score of 63.5 to a posttest mean score of 84.2 (p < 0.05), supported by a moderate N-Gain value of 0.567. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study lies in the development of a PBL-based module specifically focused on sports injury management and first aid training for prospective teachers, supported by a multi-party evaluation approach involving experts, lecturers, and students, which provides a comprehensive assessment of the module’s feasibility and contributes to strengthening safety literacy in physical education contexts.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to map how the educational philosophies of constructivism, progressivism, pragmatism, and humanism shape pedagogical paradigms and teaching practices in elementary science education. It also seeks to develop an integrative conceptual framework that supports meaningful and student-centered science learning in 21st-century primary education. Methodology: This study employed a qualitative Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following PRISMA guidelines. Articles were retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases covering the 2015–2025 period. Ten peer-reviewed articles were selected after identification, screening, and eligibility stages. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and narrative synthesis supported by a structured data extraction instrument. Main Findings: Constructivism promotes active knowledge construction through inquiry-based approaches such as CIBSE. Progressivism emphasizes student-centered and adaptive learning environments supported by digital technology. Pragmatism integrates cultural and empirical knowledge through experiential reflection, while humanism supports holistic development by addressing affective and social dimensions. Effective science learning emerges from the interaction of these traditions rather than reliance on a single paradigm. Novelty/Originality of this study: The study synthesizes four philosophical traditions into a unified Integrative Philosophical Framework, which has rarely been explored in previous SLR studies. The findings encourage educators to adopt a reflective multi-philosophical approach. However, the review is limited by its small sample size and reliance on predominantly English-language sources. Future research should involve longitudinal mixed-methods studies across a broader range of educational contexts.

Abstract

Scientific literacy is a foundational competency for 21st-century learners, yet Indonesia consistently ranks among the lowest performers in international assessments such as PISA. This study aimed to examine the effect of ethnoscience-based pop-up books on the scientific literacy of Grade 4 students at SDN 37, Kabupaten Sorong, Southwest Papua. Employing a one-group pretest-posttest design with total sampling (n = 8), the study used an existing pop-up book integrating local Papuan ethnoscience knowledge, specifically traditional medicinal plants (Piper betle, Curcuma longa, and Zingiber officinale var. rubrum), into science content aligned with the national curriculum. Data were collected through a 20-item multiple-choice scientific literacy test based on three PISA indicators: (1) explaining phenomena scientifically, (2) evaluating and designing scientific inquiry, and (3) interpreting data and evidence. Instrument validity was confirmed by two science education experts, and data normality was verified using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Results demonstrated an increase in mean scores from 47.50 (pretest) to 78.13 (posttest), yielding an average N-gain of 0.58 (moderate category). A paired-sample t-test confirmed statistical significance (t = 10.32, df = 7, p < 0.001). These findings indicate that ethnoscience-based pop-up books demonstrated a moderate improvement in students' scientific literacy by bridging local cultural knowledge with formal scientific concepts, offering a non-digital pedagogical strategy for remote elementary schools in eastern Indonesia.
