Abstract

This community service activity aims to provide differentiated learning training for elementary school teachers in Magelang Regency as an implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. This curriculum requires educators to provide learning that is tailored to the needs, interests and abilities of students. Partners in this activity are 32 teachers from SDN 1 Payaman and SDN Madusari. Most teachers do not understand in depth the concept of learning. The activity method consists of three main stages, namely preparation, implementation and evaluation. In the preparation stage, the team first analyzes training needs by conducting interviews with teachers. Then, at the implementation stage, activities include delivering material on the basics of differentiated learning, group discussions and micro-teaching practices. The evaluation results showed an increase in the average score from 43.33 on the pretest to 81.90 on the posttest. This training makes a positive contribution in preparing teachers to implement differentiated learning according to students' interests and needs so that students can develop competencies according to expectations.

Abstract

Language plays a central role in the teaching process because they connect, complement knowledge, and shape learners’ worldviews. When learning a language, textbooks play a very important role in conveying language input as well as shaping leaners’ knowledge of language structure and social roles. In Indonesia, English textbooks are expected to meet the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standards to supports communicative competence across educational level s. However, recent studies show that many high school English textbooks fail to meet the expected ECFR B1 level. Addressing this issue this study investigates how transitivity processes and participants are represented in the reading sections of Pathway to English textbook for SMA/MA Grade X with the aim of discovering how language structures facilitate students’ linguistics and cognitive development. Using descriptive qualitative method and discourse analysis grounded in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics theorized by Gerot and Wignell, the study analyzes 297 clauses from selected texts. It determines the process types of transitivity and explores participant roles in each process. The results reveal dominance of material processes (51.85%), which implies focus on physical activity and concrete events, followed by elational (29.97%), mental (7.74%), verbal (6.06%), existential (3.03%), and behavioral (1.35%) processes, none of the meteorological processes. Participant roles such as actors and goals mainly took place in material processes, while sensors and phenomena were common in mental processes. This distribution shows that although the textbook offers diversity in types of transitivity, it may fall short in offering balance to ensure diversified linguistic exposure. These findings offer suggestions for textbook developers and teachers to strengthen the expression of the process of transitivity, thus improving English instruction and enriching students’ linguistic and critical thinking skills in EFL context.

Abstract

Inspired by the approach of “Teaching Unplugged: Dogme in English Language Teaching” developed by Luke Meddings and Scott Thornbury, this theoretical research introduces and offers a conceptual design of teacher training intended to be relevant to novice Indonesian EFL teachers, especially those working at schools located in the most remote and disadvantaged areas of Indonesia. The training is designed based on the theoretical framework of the approach and critical reviews of several related empirical studies. This article, therefore, focuses on exploring the applications of the approach by examining some other research including the most recent ones about the approach, and investigating its relevance to the context of English education at the most disadvantaged schools in Indonesia. The practical stages and syllabus are also presented in the article so that both teachers as participants and teacher educators can easily follow and understand how the materials can be implemented in their teaching contexts. Considering the theoretical-based materials and well-planned activities that the training offers, novice EFL teachers, after completing the program, are expected to be able to improve their both language and pedagogical skills that are needed in their school contexts and in line with the recent curriculum, the Merdeka curriculum.

Abstract

The implementation of an English syllabus in higher education often reveals a gap between the planned curriculum and actual classroom practice. While this is a known issue, limited research has explored the specific challenges and strategies from the perspective of lecturers in the Indonesian university context. This study addresses this gap by investigating the difficulties lecturers face and the adaptive strategies they employ. This research utilised a qualitative descriptive method, gathering data through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations with English language lecturers from several Indonesian universities. The findings reveal that challenges in syllabus implementation are caused by both internal and external factors. The internal factor is the significant variation in students’ English proficiency level, which is often linked to students’ motivation gap and limited English language practice, leading to the needs for differentiated learning in the classroom. The external factor is the world rapid change, which requires teaching materials to remain relevant and updated. In addition, time constraints further complicate the implementation. To manage these, lecturers apply strategies such as differentiated teaching, strategic code-switching, material updates, and flexible time management. Importantly, lecturers perceive these adaptations not as a misalignment with the syllabus, but as a necessary and professional flexibility to meet students' needs. The study concludes that effective syllabus implementation is a dynamic process of adaptation rather than rigid adherence. A collaborative approach between syllabus designers and implementers, combined with continuous evaluation, is essential to ensure the syllabus remains a relevant and effective tool that can respond to diverse student needs.
