Abstract

Sufism is a spiritual dimension of Islam that grew out of the early Islamic tradition of asceticism, where the companions and followers of the Prophet lived simply to draw closer to God. This research explores the historical development of Sufism from the 3rd to the 6th centuries of the Islamic calender, focusing such as Hasan al-Basri, Rabi’ah al-Adawiyah, Al-Junaid al-Baghdadi and Al-Ghazali played significant roles in shaping Sufism, emphasizing a balance between spirituality and Islamic law. From the 6th to the 11th centuries, Sufism became institutionalized through various Sufi orders like Qadiriyya and Naqshabandiyya, which spread Islam to regions like the Indonesian archipelago. These orders effectively combined Islamic teachings with local cultures. While some criticized Sufism for deviating from Islamic law, reformers like Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi ensured its continued relevance. Today, Sufism offers spiritual solutions to modern challenges such as materialism and individualism, guiding Muslims toward a deeper connection with God. Sufi teachings not only purify the soul but also strengthen morality and promote social harmony.

Abstract

The study of Islam with an approach to Sufi mysticism focuses on the spiritual dimension of Islam, emphasizing the pursuit of closeness to God through inner experiences such as dhikr and meditation. Sufism offers an approach that differs from the legal and social aspects of Islam, prioritizing unity with God and the purification of the soul. This research explores the history of Sufism, mystical experiences like fana and baqa, and critiques of Sufi practices from both traditional and reformist scholars. Additionally, Sufism is examined in the context of contemporary Islamic society, connecting it with psychology and philosophy to balance rational and spiritual aspects. This journal aims to provide insights into Sufism’s contribution to character formation and spirituality among Muslims, as well as its relevance in a modern, materialistic world

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the educational values of ethical Sufism (Tasawuf Akhlaki) in the book Al-Hikam by Habib Abdullah Bin Alwi Al-Haddad. The study is motivated by the phenomenon of moral decline among Muslims, especially students. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library research method. Primary data are derived from the original Arabic text of Al-Hikam and its Indonesian translation, while secondary data are obtained from relevant scientific articles, journals, and books. The findings indicate that the ethical Sufism values in Al-Hikam encompass spiritual, moral, and social aspects that play a vital role in shaping individual character. The implementation of these values aligns with the objectives of Indonesia's National Education System as outlined in Law No. 20 of 2003, emphasizing the development of students into faithful, pious, morally upright, and skillful individuals. These Sufism values also support the creation of an educational environment that balances intellectual and spiritual aspects, contributing positively to the improvement of the young generation’s morality..

Abstract

The tafsir (Qur’anic commentary) is one of the essential tools for explaining and deepening the understanding of the teachings of the Qur’an within the community. Besides serving as a religious instrument, tafsir often reflects cultural richness by integrating Islamic aspects with local cultural values. This study aims to explore how the cultural identity of the Sundanese people is reflected in the Tafsir Raudhatul Irfan fi Ma’rifatil Qur’an, written by K.H. Ahmad Sanusi from Sukabumi. The research method used is descriptive-analytical with a qualitative approach. The findings of this study indicate that the cultural identity in the Tafsir Raudhatul Irfan is evident in several aspects of local wisdom, particularly in the field of language. The Sundanese language used in this tafsir is the daily language of the mufassir (commentator). Thus, the writing of this tafsir was primarily intended for the students in Islamic boarding schools and the Sundanese community who understand the language rather than for a broader audience. Furthermore, the cultural identity is also reflected in the writing system, where the mufassir utilizes the Pegon script to convey his tafsir. The Pegon script, which is a writing system that uses Arabic characters for the Sundanese, Javanese, and Madurese languages, is employed in this tafsir as a means to preserve and maintain local literary traditions while still conveying Islamic teachings.

Abstract

The understanding of religious texts in contemporary Muslim communities is often dominated by a rigid literal approach that overlooks the inner dimensions and social contexts. In facing the challenges of modernity, pluralism, and the complexities of urban life, an alternative interpretation that is more inclusive and flexible is needed. Ibn Arabi, a Sufi and Islamic philosopher, offers profound hermeneutics through the power of imagination, symbolism, ‘irfani epistemology, and his mystical system of knowledge. This study aims to explore Ibn Arabi’s hermeneutical concepts as an alternative religious interpretation relevant to contemporary urban Muslim communities. The method employed is a literature review using a hermeneutical approach, involving an in-depth analysis of Ibn Arabi’s major works, such as al-Futuhat al-Makiyyah and Fusus al-Hikam, along with modern interpretations of his intellectual legacy. The findings reveal that Ibn Arabi’s hermeneutics provide a strong foundation for understanding religious texts more holistically, integrating the inner and outer dimensions through methods such as ta’wil, kashf, and mushahadah. Ibn Arabi’s approach is relevant for urban communities as it bridges tradition and modernity, fostering a spiritual, inclusive, and contextual understanding of religion. His intellectual legacy not only addresses the challenges of modern religious interpretation but also opens up spaces for dialogue between Islamic traditions and contemporary societal needs.

Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to analyze the role of Nusantara ulama’s da’wah in promoting Islamic moderation as a response to global narratives that often marginalize peripheral Islamic traditions, as represented by the Blackwater symbol. Method - This research employs a qualitative approach using the library research method. Data were collected from various literature sources and analyzed descriptively and analytically. Result  -  The findings indicate that Nusantara ulama play a significant role in fostering Islamic moderation by integrating Islamic values with local wisdom. Nusantara Islam, characterized by its tolerance, inclusiveness, and flexibility, has proven to be a relevant model for Islamic moderation in global discourse. The narrative of Nusantara Islam addresses critiques of the marginalization of Southeast Asia as "peripheral Islam". It demonstrates that Islam can develop peacefully through processes of vernacularization and indigenization without losing its universal essence. Implication – This study underscores the importance of strengthening the study of Nusantara Islam in global discourse to offer an alternative to Islam's often conflictual and homogenizing narratives. Originality/Value - This research contributes by linking the da’wah of Nusantara ulama and the concept of Islamic moderation with critiques of global symbolism, such as Blackwater.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of cognitive psychology principles in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at Darussalam Early Childhood Education (PAUD). Using a qualitative approach with Focus Group Discussion (FGD) techniques involving teachers, parents, and psychologists, this research explores effective learning strategies based on children's cognitive development. The findings indicate that the application of visual and concrete media, direct experiential learning, and structured repetition significantly enhance children's attention, understanding, and memory of religious values. These approaches align with Piaget's cognitive development theory and information processing theory, which emphasize the importance of concrete experiences and repetition in early childhood learning. The study concludes that the integration of cognitive psychology principles into the PAI curriculum creates more meaningful and effective learning experiences. The research suggests the need for developing multimodal learning models and teacher training programs to optimize the implementation of cognitive psychology-based strategies in early childhood Islamic education.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing challenges of diversity in the global era, such as intolerance, radicalism, and humanitarian crises, which reveal a gap between the universal values of Islam, namely Karāmah al-Insān and Rahmatan lil‘Ālamīn, and the social practices of some communities, including in the context of Islamic Religious Education (IRE). To address these issues, this study uses a qualitative approach based on literature review through conceptual analysis, literature synthesis, and content analysis of recent scientific references discussing human values, religious moderation, and the reconstruction of IRE pedagogy. The results of the study show that transformative PAI can only be realized through a paradigm shift from a normative-doctrinal approach to a humanistic-transformative model that is dialogical, contextual, digitally literate, and action-based, with teachers as uswah ḥasanah and agents of change. This study confirms that the integration of the values of Karāmah al-Insān and Rahmatan lil 'Ālamīn into case-based curriculum and learning methodologies, reflective dialogue, digital literacy, and service learning can strengthen the humanistic orientation of PAI and serve as an effective strategy in countering narratives of extremism and fostering social piety oriented towards Maqāṣid al-Syarī‘ah..
