Abstract

This paper examines the role of goal adjustment (goal disengagement and goal re-engagement) as a moderator of maladaptive perfectionism and academic achievement in Indonesian gifted undergraduate students. This cross-sectional study employs a mixed-method sequential explanatory approach. On the quantitative stage, eighty-six undergraduates identified as gifted students completed Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Goal Adjustment Scale and self-reported GPA. On the qualitative stage, eight participants were selected from the quantitative stage to participate in a face to face interview. The result showed that maladaptive perfectionism negatively correlated with academic achievement. The interaction between maladaptive perfectionism and academic achievement moderated by goal disengagement show significant interaction, while goal re-engagement was not significant.

Abstract

An earthquake struck Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia in 2019, and Sigi Regency was one of the most affected areas. Based on a psychological perspective, studies were significant to understand how earthquakes impacted Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This study aimed to examine the effect of social support on CDSE (Career Decision Self-Efficacy). As many as 141 high school students as the earthquake victims in Sigi filled out the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale Short-Form (CDMSES-SF) and Adolescent Social Support Scale (ASSS). The data were analyzed using the multiple regression approach in IBM SPSS Software Version 23.00. The findings showed that teachers’ social support successfully enhanced CDSE. Also, CDSE was significantly affected by social support received from peers. On the other hand, this study confirmed that there was no significant effect of parents’ social support on CDSE. The results contributed to the career counseling program for high school students by taking into account teachers’ and peers’ social support.

Abstract

The junior high school major decision, influenced by personality and capacity, has a subsequent impact on the future careers of the students. This study aimed to identify the mediating role of planned happenstance in the relationship between proactive personality and career decision self-efficacy in junior high school students. As many as 140 junior high school students in Jabodetabek with an average age of 14 years participated in this study. They mainly consist of 9thgrade students (88 females and 52 males). This quantitative study used a non-experimental design, namely the cross-sectional study design. Three adapted measurement tools: career decision selfefficacy short form, proactive personality scale, and planned happenstance career inventory were used to collect the data. Data were analyzed using Haye’s regression techniques to test the mediation. The finding supports the hypothesis, that planned happenstance partially mediates the relationship between proactive personality and career decision self-efficacy. In other words, proactive personality could influence students’ planned happenstance, which ultimately could predict their level of selfefficacy in making career decisions. The implications of the results for the development and preparation for junior high school students are discussed.

Abstract

Making a career decision is one of the most complex development tasks faced by high school students who will graduate from school. Students need to believe that they would succeed in their effort to do the necessary tasks during the process of career decision-making. This belief is referred to as a career decision self-efficacy. This study examined the influence of parenting style on career decision self-efficacy through the mediation of proactive personality in senior high school students. A total of 949 participants were involved in this study. Data were collected using Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form, Parental Authority Questionnaire, and Proactive Personality Scale. Data were analyzed using the regression technique with the Macro Process from Hayes. The regression results show that fathers’ and mothers’ authoritative parenting directly affect career decision self-efficacy; fathers’ and mothers’ authoritarian parenting, as well as mother's permissive parenting, affect the career decision self-efficacy only through the mediation of proactive personality. Also, fathers’ permissive parenting did not have a significant effect on career decisions self-efficacy either directly or indirectly through a proactive personality. Therefore parents – both father and mother – need to involve in developing career decision self-efficacy of their children through parenting process, especially authoritative parenting.

Abstract

Behavior problems among children in Indonesia are still high. The number of children involved in legal problems shows that there are existing moral problems. A crucial component in morals is empathy. Family, as the primary system in a child's life, has a significant influence on the development of empathy in children. This research was conducted to analyze the effect of parenting style on empathy in children through family communication patterns in early childhood in Indonesia. As many as 233 parents of 6 - 8 years old children participated in this study. The Parental Authority Questionnaire-Revised (PAQ-R), Basic Empathy Scale - Parent Report (BES-PR) and Family Communication Patterns-Revised (FCP-R) were used to collect the data. The results of this study indicate that family communication patterns mediate the relationship between parenting style and empathy in children. Conversational communication pattern mediate the effect of both authoritative parenting and permissive parenting on child's empathy independently. Conformity communication pattern only mediate the influence of authoritarian parenting on empathy in children. The current findings add information about the understanding about parenting strategies and interactions as well as the role of the family in the development of empathy in children.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of picture in storybook reading to increase kindness in children. This research involved 31 children aged 5-6 years; they were taken from the kindergarten in Bandung as the participants. The intervention was done by reading eight picture books in eight days. The kindness was measured using a measurement instrument created by the researcher, in the form of nine coloured cards that described the behaviour of kindness. The measurement was also done by seeing through the kindness tree and observation sheets that filled out by the teacher. The data analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-rank test shows a significant difference in the average score of kindness (p<0,05) before and after picture storybook reading. Two weeks after the intervention, the improvement on all kindness behaviours with the post-test score is greater than pre-test score that still can be found. Observation through kindness tree and observational sheets shows the same result.

Abstract

Adolescents undergo an important process that is deciding which career path will impact their future later. For vocational high school students, career decision making is not an easy task because there are many career choices, which is go to college, enter the workforce, or being entrepreneur. They have to be confident with themselves that they are able to make the right career decisions. This study aimed to examine the role of perceived parenting styles on career decision self-efficacy through mediation of trait emotional intelligence in vocational high school students. The respondents of the study were 702 students in 12th grade. The adapted Career Decision Self Efficacy – Short Form, Parental Authority Questionnaire, and Trait Emotional Questionnaire were used in this study. The data were analysed using Hayes’ PROCESS simple mediation model. Mediation analyses showed that trait emotional intelligence partially and positively mediated the effect of paternal and maternal authoritative parenting styles on career decision self-efficacy; trait emotional intelligence partially and negatively mediated the effect of paternal and maternal authoritarian parenting styles on career decision self-efficacy. The implication for further research is given on the end of study.

Abstract

Previous studies have shown that father plays an important role in children’s lives (Lamb, 2010). Father involvement has been found to promote independence, self control, and socialize gender role in early childhood children. This study aimed to obtain baseline data as the first stage of preparation of intervention program of father involvement as an intervention for father who had early childhood children. 54 fathers who had early children aged between 1 to 5 year olds were involved in this study. The design in this study was non-experimental research, one-shot study. The instrument was developed based on five aspects of father involvement (Pleck, 2010). The results of this study showed that father involvement in parenting for early childhood was moderate (M = 3.14). The control aspect of the father involvement reached the highest score (M = 3.31), while the lowest aspects of father involvement were in the aspect of positive involvement activities (M = 3.04) and process responsibility (M = 3.04). Based on this study, further research was necessary to develop a psychoeducation intervention program that optimalized father involvement in parenting for early childhood.

Abstract

This research presented the relationship between a child’s empathy and parents’ prejudice, which was mediated by parenting style. The purpose of this research was to determine whether parenting style could be a mediator between parents’ prejudice and child’s empathy and also what type of parenting style would be appropriate to increase empathy in children. The research respondents consisted of 233 parents who had children aged 6-8 years old and were measured using the Basic Empathy Scale-Parent Report (BES-PR), the Blatant Prejudice Scale, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire-Revised (PAQ-R). The data obtained were processed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression (Hayes process). The results show that parenting style can be a mediator between child’s empathy and parents’ prejudice. The parenting style that can increase empathy in children is authoritative parenting. It means that when parents have a low prejudice, they tend to apply authoritative parenting, and this has an effect on increasing empathy in children.

Abstract

The research examined whether the communication patterns in the family by conversation and conformity orientations served as mediators of the relation between children’s empathy and family income. The research was conducted to parents of children age six to eight years old as the participants (N = 233) in Jakarta, Indonesia. The parents’ completed parent’s questionnaire for children’s empathy, family income, and family communication pattern. The relation analyzed using PROCESS Hayes. The results that the family communication pattern partially mediated the children’s empathy and family income. This research result shows a couple of findings. First, the children who come from a low-income family with family conformity orientation have lower empathy. The second finding is that the children with the family who have family conversation orientation have higher empathy. This second finding works for both low and high incomes family. Besides, only conformity orientation is found to mediate the effect of family income on child’s empathy. This research finds there are connections between family environment and children’s behavior. Developing the children’s empathy going to be positive for their social-emotional outcomes in the future is paramount because the children learn to express and regulate their emotion in a positive way when they have higher empathy.
