Abstract

Abstract

The high activity in the coastal area of the Sunda Strait has led to an increase in waste, especially plastic waste, which takes a long time to decompose. This plastic waste problem also disrupts mangrove rehabilitation activities in Panimbang Jaya Village, so a step is needed to process plastic waste, one of which is into paving blocks. The objectives of this activity are 1) Conducting training and counseling related to the management of plastic waste into paving blocks, 2) Transferring technology for making paving blocks using stoves with alternative fuel used oil, 3) Strengthening community groups concerned with mangroves through alternative economic sources. The implementation of this community service activity uses participatory and collaborative methods with activity stages starting from preparation, implementation of training and evaluation in the form of independent paving block production. The target community for this activity is the community group concerned with mangroves in Panimbang Jaya Village (KOMPAKSI). The results obtained in this activity are the implementation of training on the use of plastic waste processing tools in a participatory manner by the target community. The target community gave a positive response in each activity to increase the benefits of the activities carried out. The conclusion of this community service activity is that the process of transferring technology for processing plastic waste into paving blocks went well so that it could increase community capacity and alternative economic sources.

Abstract

Blue swimming crab is one of the capture fisheries sector leading commodities in Banten Bay which is caught using gill nets and collapsible traps. The risk of lost fishing gears during operation is very high, both due to the bad weather and interactions with other fishing gear. The Abandoned, Lost or Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) contributes significantly to the abundance of marine plactics in the world which has a negative impact on the sustainability of fish resources, water quality and endangers the safety of navigation. Nevertheless, there have been no mitigation activities and efforts to reduce ALDFG in the Banten Bay. This study aims to identify the global causes of lost fishing gear derived from blue swimming crab fisheries in Banten Bay. Data were collected around the Archipelagic Fishing Port (PPN) of Karangantu in May-June 2022. In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 respondents who were selected purposively and the results were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that generally, the causes of lost gear were conflicts with other fishing gear which constitute 64%, whilst human errors during fishing operations and bad weather contributed 19% and 17%, respectively. Keywords: ALDFG, conflict, blue swimming crab, lost gear.

Abstract

The collapsible crab trap commonly used to harvest blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) in Banten Bay employs a 1.0-inch mesh wall, which restricts the escape of undersized crabs. To enhance size selectivity without compromising capture efficiency, a modified trap was developed featuring a 2.5-inch wall mesh and a yellow-colored entrance. Fishing trials were conducted in September 2024 and October 2025 in Banten Bay using trash fish as bait. Data collected included the carapace width and weight of the crabs, as well as the total weight of bycatch. A descriptive analysis and scoring method were applied to evaluate trap effectiveness. The design parameters used in the scoring analysis are the percentage of crab weight, the percentage of bycatch weight, the percentage of crabs legal crab, the percentage of undersize crabs, and the average carapace width of the crab. The t-test equal variance was conducted to compare whether there was an effect of differences in trap designs on the weight of the crab obtained. Results indicated that the modified trap achieved a high effectiveness score (total = 18). The modified trap produced 82% of the total catch weight from target crabs and only 18% from bycatch. The use of a yellow entrance combined with a 2.5-inch wall mesh significantly improved the catch proportion of marketable-sized crabs while reducing bycatch biomass. Key words: entrance color, fishing efficiency, selectivity, trap wall
