Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the competence of elementary school teachers in teaching Javanese script through training and mentoring activities in Sarongan Village, Banyuwangi. The program was motivated by the limited mastery of Javanese script among teachers, the lack of effective teaching methods, and the declining interest of students in learning traditional scripts. The implementation consisted of two main stages: (1) theoretical and practical sessions delivered face-to-face, covering Javanese script writing and teaching techniques, and (2) mentoring sessions conducted online to guide teachers in applying the knowledge directly in their classrooms. The methods used included lectures, drills, assignments, discussions, and performance-based assessments. The results showed that teachers’ understanding and teaching skills improved significantly, with 70% of participants being able to conduct Javanese script lessons according to proper writing rules. Participants’ responses indicated high satisfaction and increased motivation to integrate Javanese script into their teaching practices. The program not only strengthened the teachers’ capacity but also contributed to the preservation of local cultural heritage in formal education. The output of this program included a training video, media publications, an article, and an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) registration. These results highlight the importance of continuous capacity building for teachers in remote areas to ensure sustainable cultural education and community empowerment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of e-modules designed with a step-by-step exercise model in supporting student activities in learning Tembang Macapat. The research was conducted using classroom action research involving five main learning activities, including notation practice and vocal exercises. Observations were made over two learning days. Results showed that students initially focused heavily on complex tasks, while simpler tasks were completed more gradually. On the second day, student performance became more balanced and efficient, indicating adaptation to the structured e-module design. Activity 4 showed increased engagement, reflecting deeper cognitive involvement. The findings suggest that structured e-modules can improve learning efficiency and student independence in traditional music education. This study contributes to the integration of local cultural content into digital learning tools and offers a practical model for designing adaptive and culturally responsive learning resources in arts education.

Abstract

Studies examining the personality structure of main characters in Javanese children's literature remain limited, particularly in revealing the psychological values embedded in children's stories. The study aims to analyze the main character’s personality in the wacan bocah Penulis Cilik and Nggawe Kebun Sayur by S. Wahyuni Adi, using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic approach, which encompasses three elements of personality: the id, the ego, and the superego. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach, employing data collection techniques such as literature reviews and documentation. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The data used included dialogue, narration, and character actions. The study's findings indicate that the id element is evident in the characters’ desires, such as their aspirations and their need to achieve self-satisfaction. The ego element reflects the characters’ ability to adapt to social situations. The superego element is evident through the influence of values related to discipline, ethics, and social responsibility. These findings indicate that S. Wahyuni Adi’s work not only offers stories for entertainment but also explores complex psychological dynamics relevant to children’s literature research. This study contributes to the development of literary psychology studies, particularly regarding the formation of children’s characters in Javanese-language literature.

Abstract

The preservation of Indonesian cultural identity among migrant communities has become increasingly important in the era of globalization. Indonesian students enrolled in non-formal education programs abroad often experience limited access to cultural learning, particularly regional cultural heritage. This community engagement program aimed to strengthen Javanese cultural literacy among Indonesian students in Kuala Lumpur and Johor, Malaysia, through participatory cultural education activities. The program involved students from non-formal educational institutions, Indonesian migrant communities, and cultural organizations in Malaysia. Activities were conducted through lectures, demonstrations, guided practices, cultural performances, and collaborative learning focusing on Javanese language, Javanese script, traditional songs, etiquette (unggah-ungguh basa), and karawitan. Data were collected through participatory observation, documentation, attendance records, and reflective evaluations. The results demonstrated increased participant engagement, improved understanding of Javanese cultural practices, stronger appreciation toward traditional arts, and enhanced awareness of Indonesian cultural identity. Approximately 85% of participants actively engaged in cultural practices, while 78% demonstrated improved understanding of Javanese language etiquette and cultural expressions after the program. The initiative also generated sustainable institutional collaboration between Universitas Negeri Surabaya, Indonesian community organizations, and higher education institutions in Malaysia. The novelty of this program lies in integrating cultural diplomacy, community empowerment, and heritage-based education within Indonesian diaspora communities abroad. The findings indicate that community-based cultural engagement can effectively contribute to cultural preservation, intercultural understanding, and international educational networking.
