Abstract

The implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) method in the teaching of English at the junior high school level has proven to be beneficial and effective, as evidenced by the research findings. PBL focuses on the learning process itself by incorporating real-world issues and problems that are aligned with the school curriculum. This approach addresses various challenges that may arise during the learning process, such as lack of engagement, learning disabilities, language barriers, limited resources, and teacher-student relationships. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate perception of teachers regarding PBL and traditional method of teaching English at the junior high School level. The research design used was descriptive, and it involved data collection through interviews, as well as analysis. The data were gathered from various English teachers at different Junior High Schools in South Sumatra, with a total of 34 participants. A questionnaire was used to measure perception of teachers regarding both learning methods in teaching. The results showed a dominant preference for PBL as the selected method. Moreover, teachers also acknowledged a significant improvement in the learning outcomes of students. The contributions of PBL were twofold, 1) it promoted active learning by requiring students to take an active role during the learning process, and 2) it developed problem-solving skills by requiring the identification, analysis, and resolution of real-world problems.

Abstract

Objective of this study is to explore the culture shock experienced by Sudanese students studying at a university in Palembang, Indonesia, focusing on both students' psychological and sociocultural adaptation challenges and strategies when adapted to a new cultural environment. The method is qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through questionnaires and unstructured interviews to obtain a deeper exploration of students’ perspectives. As a result, the findings reveal that Sudanese students experienced the four stages of culture shock such as honeymoon, crisis, recovery, and adjustment. During the crisis stage, students reported difficulties related to language barriers, food, climate differences, and communication patterns with local students. Over time, in the recovery and adjustment stages, students gradually adapted by building social networks, improving language skills, and engaging in local cultural practices. Furthermore, this study offers novelty by integrating intercultural adaptation theories and exploring the under-researched experiences of African students in Indonesia by providing insights into how they enhance academic adaptability and sociocultural competence during classroom activities. The findings reveal that social adaptation strategies significantly improved students' English ability by encouraging actual language exposure, improving academic confidence, and promoting greater understanding and production of academic texts.

Abstract

Speaking remains a persistent challenge for Indonesian EFL learners, partly because classroom instruction often provides limited opportunities for meaningful oral practice. At the same time, students’ frequent engagement with short-form social media videos, particularly Instagram Reels, offers potential exposure to authentic, contextualized spoken English. This study investigated students’ engagement with English roleplay content on Instagram Reels and its perceived contribution to EFL speaking learning. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected from 32 eleventh-grade students in a bilingual class at a public senior high school through closed-ended and open-ended questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis to identify patterns in emotional, cognitive, and behavioral engagement, as well as perceived speaking-related benefits and challenges. The findings revealed that students demonstrated strong emotional engagement, reflected in enjoyment, interest, and reduced learning pressure, and high cognitive engagement, shown through efforts to understand, remember, and notice vocabulary, pronunciation, expressions, and contextual language use. Behavioral engagement was mainly reflected in frequent viewing and imitation, while direct interaction and original content creation remained limited due to low confidence and fear of public judgment. Students perceived English roleplay Reels as helpful for improving pronunciation, vocabulary exposure, fluency awareness, tone, expression, and comfort in speaking English. However, distraction from entertainment content, time management issues, technical constraints, and limited confidence in producing videos constrained its pedagogical value. These findings suggest that Instagram Reels can serve as a supplementary speaking resource when integrated with guided imitation, structured speaking tasks, feedback, and confidence-building activities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine Electrical Engineering students’ perceptions of essential English skills and the conceptualization of learning needs and goals within a journal-based ESP context related to academic and professional demands. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design involving 35 Electrical Engineering students enrolled in a one-semester English course. The learning process was structured into six meetings through group discussions and presentations based on English-language journal article texts aligned with the syllabus. Data were collected through interviews and a Likert-scale questionnaire to address the research questions. The results revealed that 80.7% of students participated in the English course to improve their English-speaking skills, although 48% still identified speaking as their primary learning difficulty. Journal article-based ESP learning functions as a pedagogical strategy that shapes students' perceptions of English learning needs and goals in alignment with academic and professional demands. These findings highlight the need to reconceptualize ESP curriculum design by positioning discipline-specific academic practices through reading activities. The findings also contribute to improving students’ English speaking and reading skills to support academic learning processes in higher education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the types and meanings of similes in sixteen selected Taylor Swift songs and explains their pedagogical implications for English literature teaching. It addresses the need to connect stylistic analysis of popular song lyrics with figurative-language instruction, literary interpretation, vocabulary development, and critical reading in English education. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design using stylistic, document-analysis, and text-oriented procedures. Thirty-eight simile units were identified through repeated reading and recorded in a coding sheet. The units were classified as open or closed similes, interpreted contextually, and organized into semantic categories through qualitative content and thematic analysis. The analysis identified thirty-eight similes. Closed similes dominated with thirty-three occurrences, whereas open similes occurred five times. Eleven semantic categories emerged: love, admiration, disappointment, surprise, memory, confusion, satisfaction, frustration, sincerity, social positioning, and enjoyment. The comparisons construct emotional imagery, narrative intimacy, evaluation, identity, and reflective meaning. The findings can support English literature, stylistics, figurative-language, reading, and vocabulary courses. Teachers may use selected lyrics as authentic literary materials for identifying comparative markers, distinguishing simile types, inferring shared features, interpreting emotional effects, discussing themes, and producing original figurative expressions through structured classroom activities. This study advances previous song-lyric research by integrating structural classification, semantic interpretation, and pedagogical application in one analytical framework. Rather than merely listing figurative-language types, it demonstrates how similes function as meaning-making devices and translates the findings into a scaffolded approach for teaching literary interpretation through culturally familiar popular texts.
