Abstract

Introduction: Cleft lip and/or palate is a common congenital defect. Children with this condition often experience abnormalities in the anatomical and morphological structures of the oral cavity, which contribute to poor oral hygiene and a lack of interest in maintaining dental care. Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a prevalent dental health problem in patients with cleft lip and/or palate and is affected by factors such as sugary food consumption, oral hygiene habits, frequency and use of milk bottles, and parental socioeconomic status. This study aims to identify the risk factors for ECC in children with cleft lip and/or palate. Methods: This study employed descriptive research methods, using interviews with ECC risk factor questionnaires and purposive sampling based on Taro Yamane's formula, resulting in a sample of 91 parents of children diagnosed with cleft lip and/or palate. The questionnaires used in this research had undergone validity and reliability testing. The results were analyzed using frequency distribution. Results: The results of this research showed that most respondents had education level equivalent to junior high school or high school (51.65%). The respondents' average income was below 1.5 million as follows, accounting 47.25% of the sample.  All respondents (100%) demonstrated good knowledge of maintaining their children's oral hygiene. However, the majority of respondents provided sweet foods (51.65%) and sweet drinks (43.65%) to their children 1-3 times per day. Additionally, 49.45% of respondents reported giving milk to their children before sleep, and 45,05% indicated that their children sometimes fell asleep eating without brushing teeth. Conclusion: The risk factors for ECC in patients with cleft lip and/or palate include parental education and income, children's habit of sleeping after eating without brushing their teeth, frequency of sugary foods consumption, frequency of formula milk consumption, and the practice of giving milk to children before bedtime.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Basic Health Research 2013 showed Dental Caries Index in school age student in West Java was lower than the expected target, with occlusal surface as most affected part. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk status of dental caries in school age student by using cariogram analysis. Methods: Observational research. Study was conducted on 30 student aged 11-12 years with caries high risk on occlusal surfaces. Purposive sampling was taken from students of SDN Cikawari and SDN Mekarjaya Bandung Regency with high DMF-S index. Inclusion criteria: male and female, aged 11-12 years, good systemic health, SDN Mekarjaya and SDN Cikawari Bandung Regency students. Exclusion criteria: suffering from systemic disorder, currently in long-term antibiotic therapy, orthodontic appliance usage. Case history, eating habits and intake of fluoride, caries experience, salivary volume and buffering capacity of each sample was examined using cariogram examination method. Results: The cariogram analysis showed 43% chance of caries avoidance. Diet control was 23.3%, includes two factors: sugary foods and eating frequency. Bacteria control was 11.9% by evaluating both bacterial factors (the amount of plaque and the bacteria Streptococcus mutans). Vulnerability control was 14.4%, including caries prevention by the continuation of fluorine program and other conditions control that affect salivary secretions. Conclusion: Based on cariogram analysis found that all samples who had occlusal surfaces caries were at a high risk category, but still having moderate potential of avoiding new caries occurrence by controlling risk factors. Keywords: Cariogram analysis, Occlusal caries, Aged 11-12 years

Abstract

Introduction: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) experience neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by difficulties with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behavioral patterns. Brushing teeth is one of the behaviors that needs to be trained in children with ASD, and one effective method for this is Point-of-View Video Modeling (POVVM). This study aims to evaluate the changes in toothbrushing skills among children with Autism Spectrum Disorders following intervention using the POVVM method. Methods: This study used a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The subjects, selected using the total sampling method were 16 children with ASD from Special Educational Needs (SEN) School Bunda Bening Selakshahati, Bandung Regency, consisting of 15 boys and 1 girl. The study was conducted in 3 stages, first, a pretest was conducted to assess toothbrushing skills using an observation sheet, which was assessed by two caregivers; Next, an intervention was conducted using the POVVM video on toothbrushing behavior, shown twice daily for five days; Third, a posttest was conducted to assess toothbrushing skills after the intervention. Results: The highest pre-intervention frequency observed was for the rinsing skill (56.25%), whereas the highest post-intervention score was achieved in the skill of brushing the lower middle teeth (93.75%). The most substantial improvement was also noted in brushing the lower middle teeth, with an increase of 43.75%. The average of toothbrushing skills increased from 36.3% to 66.4%, so the change score is 30.1%. Conclusion: The toothbrushing skills of children with ASD improved following the POVVM intervention, progressing from the moderately skilled to the skilled category.
