Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease that invades the hard tissues of the teeth. Dental caries is among the most common oral manifestations in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interactions, communication difficulties, and restricted repetitive behavior. ASD children have a higher risk of dental caries due to their difficulty maintaining good oral hygiene and poor diet, such as having a high preference for cariogenic foods. This study aims to analyze the association between cariogenic foods consumption frequency and the occurrence of dental caries in ASD children. Methods: Quantitative study was performed with a cross-sectional design and total sampling techniques on 15 ASD children. Data analysis using Spearman Rank test. Results: This study found (66,7%) of ASD children had low levels of cariogenic foods consumption. Respectively, the ASD children’s deft and DMFT indices were (3.3) and (4.4). A significant value between the frequency of consumption of cariogenic foods and DMFT/deft was (0.297). The level of relationship between the frequency of consumption of cariogenic foods with DMFT/deft is (0.289), indicating a low association. Conclusions: There is no association between cariogenic foods consumption frequency and the occurrence of dental caries in children with ASD. The average indices of DMFT and deft of ASD children are at moderate levels. ASD children have low levels of cariogenic food consumption frequency. Keywords: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Cariogenic Foods, Dental Caries.

Abstract

Parents dental knowledge and awareness are the basis of the formation for supporting or unsupportive habits for the childrens dental growth. Bad oral habit is a normal condition in the beginning of childrens life, but it should be informed that this may continue exceeding the normal stage of growth and result in abnormality in the dento facial structure, such as malocclusion. It is highly suggested that parents to be alert in preventing malocclusion caused by the continuing bad oral habit. This study, therefore, aims to identify the correlation between parents dental knowledge and the malocclusion condition on children with bad oral habit. Data are treated with correlation analysis with 100 samples of children at the age of 8 to 10 years old with bad oral habits who visit the dental clinic at Public Health Center District of Pancoran (Puskesmas Kecamatan Pancoran). Samples are drawn using the accidental purposive sampling technique from oral clinical observations and questionnaire handed to the parents. Statistic test used in this study is bivariat analysis with chi square test. The results show that the majority of the parents have an adequate knowledge (46%) on oral bad habits and malocclusion. Most of the children suffer from severe malocclusion (71%), while the rest are free from the condition. It can be concluded from the findings that there is no correlation between parents knowledge and awareness on their childrens bad oral habits and the malocclusion condition. Keywords: dental knowledge, malocclusion, bad oral habits

Abstract

Introduction: The Twin Block appliance is widely recognized as an effective treatment for Class II malocclusion in growing children. While cephalometric analysis software, including AI-based tools, is a well-established diagnostic aid, its integration into treatment planning enhances diagnostic precision and progress monitoring. This case report aims to highlight the management of a child with Class II malocclusion and mouth breathing using a Twin Block appliance, assisted by AI-driven software for cephalometric analysis to enhance treatment outcomes. Case Report: A 10-year-old boy presented with forward-positioned teeth and low self-confidence. Clinical examination revealed Class II malocclusion characterized by upper incisor protrusion and mandibular retrusion. The water-retention test confirmed mouth breathing. AI-driven cephalometric analysis using WebCeph showed an SNB angle of 75.59° and an ANB angle of 6.77°. The patient underwent nine months of Twin Block therapy with monthly adjustments. Conclusion: Twin Block therapy in this case was ineffective in achieving skeletal growth modification, likely due to factors such as treatment timing, skeletal maturity, or appliance design. AI-driven software for cephalometric analysis proved valuable for monitoring but should be viewed as a diagnostic tool rather than a determinant of treatment success.
