Abstract

Despite Karawang Regency’s strategic role as a major agricultural production center in West Java, recurring pest infestations and flooding have increasingly undermined farmers’ livelihoods. On the other hand, empirical studies examining livelihood resilience at the household level remain limited, particularly within a sustainable livelihood framework. This research addresses this gap by analyzing the resilience of agricultural livelihoods in Kutawaluya District using a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected from 55 farming households affected by pest attacks, plant diseases, flooding, and drought, and were complemented by qualitative insights to enrich contextual understanding. Livelihood resilience was assessed using the Livelihood Vulnerability Index (LVI) across key livelihood assets. The results indicate that the ecological dimension exhibits the highest vulnerability, with an LVI value of 0.9, reflecting severe exposure to environmental stressors. However, strong social capital among farming households emerges as a critical mitigating factor that enhances resilience under precarious conditions. This study contributes to the livelihood resilience theory by demonstrating the compensatory role of social capital in contexts of high ecological vulnerability. Practically, the findings provide evidence-based guidance for policymakers and extension services to strengthen social networks and collective action as part of sustainable livelihood strategies in flood- and pest-prone agricultural regions.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to determine the best forecasting model for annual rice production in Karawang Regency for the next five years, and to analyze the effect of harvested dry grain prices and rice prices on rice production. Methodology: quantitative method with a time series approach, secondary data from BPS were analyzed using Double Exponential Smoothing Holts, Double Exponential Smoothing Brown, and ARIMA. The Mean Squared Deviation (MSD) criterion was used to select the best forecasting model. The analysis of price effects was carried out using multiple linear regression. Results: The results showed that the Double Exponential Smoothing Brown method was the best forecasting model with the lowest MSD (186,055,731). The forecast showed an increase in annual rice production in Karawang Regency by 1.59% in the next five years, indicating a positive trend. Regression analysis indicated that the price of harvested dry grain had a negative effect (-176.041) on rice production, while the price of rice had a positive effect (19.504). Novelty: Offers a rice production forecasting model by comparing three time series methods and integrating them with the analysis of the influence of paddy and rice prices. Originality: This study provides guidance for policy makers in designing local food security. Conclusion: Forecasting rice production in the next 5 years shows a significant increase and influence of rice and paddy prices on rice production. Type of Research: Quantitative research.

Abstract

Agricultural activities involve farmer organizations that support farmers’ socioeconomic activities. Farmer economic organizations (KEPs) play a significant role in promoting community self-reliance and food security; however, in developing countries, the institutional framework for food security remains weak. This community faces challenges such as limited market access, necessitating development efforts to reach broader markets. The objective of this study is to formulate a development strategy for the KEP to support farmers’ welfare in Karawang Regency. The method used is quantitative descriptive. Informants were selected through purposive sampling, specifically the chairperson and secretary of this community. Data analysis employed quantitative descriptive analysis using a three-stage process for strategic planning formulation. The research results indicate that the strategy implemented by KEP Bina Jaya Tani is a growth-oriented strategy that optimizes its strengths and opportunities, namely: (1) Developing rice products using attractive packaging and a variety of rice types; (2) Increasing production capacity by leveraging easy access to raw materials from farmer groups; (3) Expanding the reach of premium rice products to the main rice markets in Karawang and surrounding areas; (4) Developing location-based digital marketing with attractive packaging; and (5) Integrating agricultural technology to efficiently improve product quality.
