Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a global health problem that continues to increase, requiring safer and more effective alternative therapies. Bidara leaves have been known to have bioactive compounds that are useful as antioxidants, antimicrobials, and antidiabetics. This study aims to determine the potential of bidara leaf extract in lowering blood sugar in diabetic rats. This study is an experimental research with four treatments. This study includes the manufacture of bidara leaf extract through the maceration method, phytochemical screening, and testing of antidiabetic activity in STZ-induced animal models. Blood sugar levels were measured before and after the intervention. The results showed that (1) bidara leaf extract contains flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and quinones; (2) Giving extracts with various concentrations for 42 days can reduce blood glucose levels in rats; (3) Bidara leaf extract at a dose of 400 mg/ml showed higher activity than other doses. Thus, it can be concluded that 70% ethanol extract of bidara leaves can be used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCOVID-19 is infectious disease caused by new corona virus which affect respiratory system. Disinfecting home and working area has been recommended measure to overcome COVID-19. Disinfection contains chemical substance needed to kill microorganisms on inert surfaces. Though people are familiar with disinfectants, their inappropriate use may affect their efficacy in eliminating infectious agent. The objective of this community service was to provide knowledge for the public in Katapang Barat village, Sampang Regency about disinfectant to control the spread of COVID-19. This activity involved people in the 15-50 years old. Materials were presented in a poster and after giving information, discussion was done. Respondents were asked to fill out questionnaire with questions about selected topic before and after socialization. Most participants were woman and individuals aged 15-25 years. According to the posttest result, education increased respondent’s knowledge. Thus, this community service was well done and achieved the expected goal. Disinfeksi rumah maupun lingkungan kerja merupakan tindakan yang telah dianjurkan untuk mengatasi COVID-19. Desinfektan mengandung bahan kimia yang diperlukan untuk membunuh mikroorganisme di permukaan benda. Meskipun masyarakat telah familar dengan desinfektan, penggunaannya yang tidak tepat dapat berpengaruh pada efikasinya dalam mengeliminasi agen penyebab infeksi. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan memberikan pengetahuan masyarakat Desa Ketapang Barat Kabupaten Sampang tentang desinfektan dalam upaya mengontrol penularan COVID-19. Kegiatan melibatkan masyarakat dengan rentang usia 15-50 tahun. Materi disusun dalam bentuk poster dan setelah pemberian informasi, dilakukan diskusi dengan masyarakat. Peserta diminta mengisi kuesioner berisi pertanyaan sesuai topik sebelum dan sesudah sosialisasi. Sebagian besar peserta penyuluhan yang hadir adalah perempuan dan individu dengan usia 15-25 tahun. Sesuai dengan hasil posttest, penyuluhan dapat meningkatkan wawasan seluruh peserta. Secara umum, kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat terlaksana dengan lancar dan mencapai tujuan yang diharapkan.Kata Kunci: desinfektan, penggunaan, sosialisasi, virus corona

Abstract

Typhoid fever is a chronic disease caused by S. typhi bacterium. This disease can be transmitted via contaminated water or food, and close contact with an infected person. The symptomps of typhoid fever include high fever, stomach pain, headache, and constipation. Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus L.) leaves extract contain active compounds with antibacterial activity. This research aims to determine the inhibitory activity of jackfruit leaves extract against S. typhi. Jackfruit leaves were extracted by maceration using 70% ethanol as solvent. After that, organoleptic test, ethanol-free test and phytochemical screening of extract were carried out. Inhibitory activity of extract was conducted using well diffusion method, followed by determination of MIC and MBC. The results showed that jackfruit leaves extract contained flavonoid, tannins, saponin, and triterpenoid. Inhbitory activity of extract was found at concentration 20% (5.24 mm), 40% (6.78 mm), and concentration 60% (8.08 mm). The MIC value of extract was 12.5%. while the MBC could not be found. Abstract

The paitan plant (Tithonia diversifolia) contains alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins and phenolics which have the potential to prevent Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). This plant also has various insecticidal activities. In society, there are many mentions of the paitan plant, so people need to know the characteristics of this paitan plant. The aim of this research is to determine the morphological characterization and specific fragments of the paitan plant, as well as to determine the activity and effective concentration of the ethanol extract of paitan leaves as a repellent for the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Two types of methods were used, namely descriptive qualitative for observing morphology, specific fragments, pollen, and phytochemical screening, and experimental methods for mosquito repellent testing, and calculating the protective power of the ethanol extract of paitan leaves. The results obtained are flowers consisting of two shapes, namely ribbon flowers in the outer circle, infertile, and tube shapes in the inner circle. Stomata are anomocytic type, while trichomes are non-glandular multicellular type. Pollen characteristics, namely small size, colpate, number 3, aperture shaped trizonocolpate with echinate ornamentation. The screening results for the ethanol extract of paitan leaves were positive for containing metabolite compounds, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids and phenolics. The results of the mosquito repellent test showed that the higher the concentration of the extract, the fewer mosquitoes that landed. Calculation of protective power shows that the most effective concentration in repelling mosquitoes is 15%, namely 93.64%. The conclusion is that paitan (Tithonia diversifolia) leaf extract has potential activity as a repellent against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with the most effective concentration being 15%.

Abstract

Probiotics are live microorganisms that are widely used to help maintain a healthy digestive system. Some compounds secreted by these bacteria have a bactericidal effect on pathogenic and putrefactive bacteria. Various types of probiotic bacteria can be obtained from fermented foods and drinks. This research aims to characterize bacteria from rebon shrimp paste in Macajah Village, Tanjung Bumi District, Bangkalan Regency, East Java Province which have potential as probiotics and test their antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria. Bacteria were isolated using the Pour Plate technique using de Man Rogosa Sharpe Agar media. The bacterial isolates were then characterized by observing colony morphology, cells and biochemical properties. Next, antibacterial activity was tested using the well diffusion method. The results showed that the four bacteria obtained from the samples were gram positive, round and rod shaped, catalase negative, homofermentative, grew at a temperature of 37-45°C, survived at NaCl concentrations of 4 and 6.5%, low pH, and bile salts. According to the characterization results, three bacterial isolates belonged to the genus Enterococcus and one other isolate belonged to the genus Bacillus. Bacillus isolate is a potential probiotic candidate, because it has inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract

Obat yang berbentuk liquida atau obat cair merupakan obat yang banyak digunakan oleh anak – anak dan juga lansia atau pasien yang memiliki kesulitan untuk menelan obat padat. Obat ini dianggap lebih praktis dan tepat dalam dosis penggunaannya karena dilengkapi dengan sendok takar sehingga dosis yang dapat diberikan lebih variatif bergantung pada kondisi pasien. Sebuah survei yang dilakukan terhadap pasien yang sedang menunggu di ruang tunggu dokter menunjukkan bahwa 73 persen pasien menggunakan sendok makan atau sendok teh untuk mengukur dosis obat cair, bukan menggunakan sendok/mangkuk ukur yang biasanya diberikan bersama obat cair. Pengukuran menggunakan sendok makan atau sendok teh yang sangat tidak akurat dapat menyebabkan masalah, seperti terlalu banyak atau terlalu sedikitnya obat yang dikonsumsi. Untuk itu, penting sekali untuk memberikan edukasi kepada Masyarakat mengenai pentingnya menggunakan sendok atau gelas takar yang disediakan di dalam kemasan obat Ketika menggunakan obat cair. Pengabdian Masyarakat yang bekerja sama dengan Sekolah Islam Terpadu (SIT) Permata Ummat Trenggalek ini memberikan materi mengenai macam sediaan cair, cara penggunaan obat cair, cara membaca brosur obat cair, dan cara pemusnahan obat cair. Kegiatan pengabdian diawali dengan pre test dan diakhir dengan post test untuk mengukur pengetahuan Masyarakat sebelum dan sesudah mengikuti kegiatan pengmas. Dari hasil evaluasi pre dan post test didapatkan peningkatan pengetahuan peserta sebelum dan sesudah mengikuti kegiatan penyuluhan.

Abstract

Pluchea indica L. is a herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family that has been known to the public as fresh vegetables and traditional medicine since ancient times. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of beluntas leaves obtained from the extraction using 70% ethanol and ethyl acetate. The identification of phytochemical screening of beluntas leaves revealed the presence of flavonoids, tanninsand alkaloids. The test of antioxidant activity was performed using the DPPH method as free radical and vitamin C as a comparison.
