Abstract

Kata Kunci: Odontologi forensik; Pemindai intraoral; Estimasi usia; Penentuan jenis kelamin; Kedokteran gigi digital ABSTRACTBackgrounds: Forensic odontology plays a crucial role in human identification, especially in estimating age and determining gender. Traditional methods such as radiographic imaging and dental casts have been widely applied, yet they present limitations regarding precision, consistency, and practicality in complex forensic scenarios. The rapid development of digital dentistry has introduced intraoral scanners (IOS) as a promising alternative, capable of generating highly accurate three-dimensional dental datasets. Objectives: This review aims to explore the contribution of intraoral scanners to forensic odontology, with emphasis on their use in age and gender estimation. Methods: A narrative review was performed by searching PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect for publications from 2016 to 2024. Keywords included “intraoral scanner,” “digital impression,” “forensic odontology,” “age estimation,” and “sex determination.”. Results: Findings from the literature indicate that intraoral scanners can deliver precise and consistent digital representations of dental and palatal anatomy. Reported forensic uses include analyzing sexual dimorphism in palatal rugae and dental arch forms, along with identifying age-related indicators such as eruption patterns and occlusal wear. Key advantages compared with conventional approaches include enhanced accuracy, non-invasive recording, and reliable long-term digital archiving. However, limitations persist, including restricted sample sizes, differences among scanner systems, and the absence of unified forensic guidelines. Conclusions: Intraoral scanners show considerable promise for supporting age and gender estimation in forensic odontology. Current evidence suggests they may improve precision and consistency relative to traditional techniques, yet broader studies and standardized procedures are required to solidify their forensic applicability.  Keywords: Forensic odontology; Intraoral scanner; Age estimation; Sex determination; Digital dentistry.

Abstract

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent chronic diseases, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. In Desa Randegansari, East Java, low awareness and poor oral hygiene contribute significantly to its high incidence. This community service program aimed to improve oral hygiene knowledge among adult residents in Desa Randegansari through a single-session education using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The session focused on key preventive topics, including the frequency and technique of toothbrushing, appropriate brushing duration, the effects of sugary foods, and common risk factors for dental caries. Before and after the session, participants completed a standardized questionnaire to assess changes in knowledge. Participants completed a questionnaire before and after the session. Results showed increased knowledge, particularly in brushing frequency (47.37% to 68.42%) and duration (36.84% to 63.16%), though understanding of the effects of sugar consumption declined slightly (89.47% to 73.68%). The number of participants answering all questions correctly rose from 0% to 21.05%. The results showed a notable increase in the number of correct responses after the session, indicating that even a single educational intervention can significantly enhance public awareness and understanding of oral health. This program highlights the effectiveness of a participatory, context-based educational model designed for rural populations with limited access to dental care. This approach helped rural communities build on existing knowledge while learning healthier habits. It proves that small, focused efforts can lead to meaningful improvements in public health awareness.

Abstract

Forensic odontology plays an important role in the identification of individuals, particularly in situations where other identification methods are no longer applicable. Conservative dentistry generates comprehensive clinical data, including restorations, radiographic images, and treatment history, which have the potential to support forensic identification processes. This study aims to analyze the role of conservative dental records in supporting forensic odontological identification from a public health perspective. The method used is a narrative review based on scientific literature published between 2020 and 2026 that is relevant to the topic. The results indicate that dental records serve as reliable and individualized antemortem data, contributing significantly to the accuracy of identification, especially in mass disaster scenarios. However, their utilization remains limited due to challenges such as lack of standardization, inconsistent documentation quality, and absence of integrated database systems. Advances in digital dentistry and artificial intelligence offer opportunities to improve the efficiency and accuracy of identification processes, although ethical and regulatory aspects must be carefully considered. In conclusion, strengthening the quality, standardization, and integration of dental records is essential to support effective forensic identification systems and public health frameworks.

Abstract

Digital transformation in the health sector has accelerated cross platform data exchange, while at the same time increasing the risks of privacy violations and patient information leakage. Law Number 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection and Law Number 17 of 2023 on Health emphasize the importance of secure and accountable medical data governance in Indonesia. This article aims to analyze the adequacy of legal protection for patient health data, with particular attention to regulatory coherence and existing normative gaps in the implementation of these two laws, as well as their relationship with the principles of medical ethics. This study applies a normative legal research method using a statutory approach, a conceptual approach, and a comparative approach. The statutory approach examines relevant legislation governing health data protection, while the conceptual approach explores ethical principles such as patient autonomy, confidentiality, and accountability. The comparative approach draws lessons from international regulatory practices to provide broader context. The findings indicate that although patient health data protection is explicitly regulated, significant gaps remain in practice, particularly regarding security standards, system interoperability, and the quality of digital consent. These weaknesses may undermine patient trust and increase legal and ethical risks. Therefore, this study recommends the implementation of Data Protection Impact Assessments, independent audits, and the integration of digital ethics into health professional education to strengthen accountability and sustain public trust, following best practices adopted in the European Union and the United States

Abstract

Tooth wear is a progressive loss of dental hard tissue commonly associated with parafunctional activities such as bruxism and clenching. In badminton athletes, physiological and psychological stress during training and competition may increase sleep bruxism activity, thereby accelerating occlusal surface wear and disrupting the stomatognathic system. The use of night guard or occlusal splint has been recommended as a conservative therapy to stabilize occlusal force distribution, reduce destructive tooth contact and decrease masticatory muscle hyperactivity during bruxism episodes. This literature review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach to evaluate the effectiveness of night guard use in reducing tooth wear and to examine its implications for focus and concentration in badminton athletes within the field of sports dentistry. Literature searches were performed through PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar for articles published between 2020 and 2025. The findings indicate that night guards are effective in reducing bruxism activity, minimizing excessive occlusal load and providing protective effects on enamel and dentin. Occlusal stabilization may also influence neuromuscular function and athletic performance readiness. However, evidence regarding its direct effects on athletes’ focus and concentration remains limited and requires further investigation. Keywords – Bruxism, Night Guard, Tooth Wear.

Abstract

Oral and dental health remain important public health issues because they directly affect overall well-being and quality of life. Community-based Puskesmas play a crucial role in promoting preventive oral health habits within the community. This study explored levels of knowledge, attitudes, and daily practices regarding oral health among community members at Pegirian Puskesmas. A descriptive study was conducted with 50 participants who took part in an oral health education activity. The analysis revealed that most participants possessed good knowledge and held very positive attitudes toward oral health; however, these attitudes were not always reflected in their everyday practices. The primary challenge identified was the disparity between what people know and how they apply it in their daily lives. For this reason, health education was delivered with an emphasis on strengthening behaviour and providing practical guidance. The results indicated that attitudes were the strongest aspect, followed by knowledge, while oral health practices remained the weakest. In conclusion, oral health promotion efforts should not only aim to increase knowledge and improve attitudes but also place greater focus on behaviour-based approaches to achieve lasting oral health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Carious lesions remain one of the most prevalent chronic oral diseases and continue to represent a major indication for operative intervention in conservative dentistry. Variability in diagnostic interpretation and treatment thresholds may compromise long-term outcomes when lesion activity and patient-related risk factors are not systematically considered. Contemporary clinical practice increasingly emphasises risk-based management strategies to enhance biological preservation and improve restorative predictability. Purpose: This evidence-informed review aims to examine current concepts and clinical implications of risk-based diagnostic assessment and treatment planning in the management of carious lesions within conservative dentistry. Reviews: The literature indicates that integration of lesion activity evaluation, individualised caries risk profiling, structured diagnostic systems, and adjunct digital technologies contributes to more consistent and minimally invasive treatment decisions. Risk-oriented approaches support preservation of remineralizable tissues, reduce unnecessary operative procedures, and enhance restoration longevity when combined with preventive reinforcement. Contemporary frameworks encourage a shift from procedure-centred intervention toward patient-centred disease control based on susceptibility and biological criteria. Conclusion: Risk-based management provides a rational and biologically grounded foundation for treating carious lesions in conservative dentistry. Incorporation of individualised risk assessment and lesion activity evaluation into routine clinical protocols strengthens treatment predictability, promotes tissue preservation, and supports sustainable restorative outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Social media has become a dominant platform for healthcare communication and promotion, particularly in aesthetic dentistry, where visual treatment outcomes are frequently shared. Patient photographs, procedural videos, and testimonials are widely used to attract public attention. However, traditional informed consent was primarily developed for clinical decision making and may not fully address the ethical implications of digital publication, including permanent online visibility, algorithm-driven dissemination, and potential secondary commercial use. Purpose: This literature review aims to analyze the ethical challenges associated with obtaining informed consent for patient-related social media content and to evaluate whether existing consent practices adequately protect patient autonomy, privacy, and professional integrity in digital environments. Reviews: Conventional informed consent emphasizes disclosure, comprehension, voluntariness, competence, and authorization. In the context of social media, additional concerns arise. Patients may experience subtle pressure to agree due to trust in the practitioner or fear of affecting their care relationship. Risk explanations often overlook long term digital exposure, uncontrolled redistribution, identity recognition despite anonymization, and reuse of content for marketing purposes. These issues create ethical tension between respect for autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, justice and professional responsibility. Current regulatory guidance in many settings does not clearly distinguish between clinical consent and consent for public digital dissemination. Conclusion: Existing informed consent models are insufficient to address the complexities of patient-related content on social media. A digitally adapted and transparent consent framework is essential to ensure voluntary participation, clear risk disclosure, and stronger protection of patient privacy in contemporary healthcare promotion.
