Abstract

In the post-pandemic era, teachers must have digital literacy skills to effectively teach and engage with their students in a virtual or hybrid learning environment. One problem with digital literacy and teachers in the post-pandemic era is that not all teachers may have the necessary skills and training to use technology for teaching and learning effectively. Building on these findings, this study aimed to investigate the digital literacy competence of English teachers and address the problems and challenges they face in the post-pandemic era. This study was conducted using a qualitative method with a descriptive analysis approach. The study was conducted in Bogor city, with data collected through a questionnaire administered from 25 English teachers in several senior high schools. The results suggest that most teachers have a high level of digital literacy in using technology to support learning, possibly due to the increasing emphasis on technology integration in education and the availability of professional development opportunities. However, there is still room for improvement in areas such as digital assessment, identifying credible sources, and recognizing risks associated with using digital tools safely. The findings also suggest that teachers with different levels of digital literacy have varying levels of understanding in areas such as copyright laws and collaboration.

Abstract

The title of this study is "The Use of Request Strategy in the Movie Leave The World Behind by Sam Esmail." The purpose of this study is to analyze how characters in the movie make requests or ask someone to do something. The analysis is based on Trosborg's request theory using a descriptive qualitative approach. This study collected 18 data from dialogues in the movie. The analysis found that there are six request strategies used by the characters. The most frequently used strategy is the hint strategy, which allows characters to express their desires implicitly, avoiding the impression of being forceful or offending the listener. Besides the hint strategy, other identified strategies include questioning the hearer’s ability or willingness, statements of the speaker’s wishes and desires, statements of the speaker’s need and demands, statements of obligations and necessities, as well as the use of imperatives. The findings show that the variation in request strategies reflects the social dynamics and relationships among the characters, influenced by the specific context and communication objectives within the movie.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges and strategies employed in translating idiomatic expressions from English to Indonesian in the animated film Inside Out 2. It analyzes both official subtitles and fan-made subtitles to identify the types of idioms used and the translation strategies applied. A corpus of idiomatic expressions was collected and analyzed using a qualitative research approach. The findings reveal that various translation strategies, including literal translation, paraphrasing, and cultural substitution, were employed to translate idiomatic expressions into Indonesian. However, the effectiveness of these strategies varied, with some strategies resulting in more accurate and culturally appropriate translations than others. The study concludes that successful translation of idiomatic expressions requires a deep understanding of the source and target languages, cultural nuances, and the intended meaning of the original text.

Abstract

This research analyzes the illocutionary acts of Adam Clay, the protagonist in The Beekeeper (2024), through the lens of John Searle’s Speech Act Theory. The objective is to explore how these acts contribute to character development and thematic elements of justice, revenge, and morality. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis methodology, dialogues from critical scenes were transcribed and categorized into Searle’s classifications: assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. The findings reveal a predominance of assertive acts (30 occurrences, 30%), followed by directives (25 instances, 25%), commissives (20 instances, 20%), expressives (15 instances, 15%), and declaratives (10 instances, 10%). This distribution underscores Clay’s assertive control and emotional complexity, enhancing the film's thematic richness. In conclusion, the study highlights the pivotal role of language as a narrative device in The Beekeeper, demonstrating how illocutionary acts encapsulate the protagonist's motivations and ethical dilemmas. This research contributes to the understanding of pragmatic analysis in cinematic contexts and sets a foundation for future investigations into the interplay between language and character development in film.
