Abstract

This study discusses the relationship between lyrics and melody in expressing emotional narratives in NIKI Zefanya’s selected songs, namely Backburner, Take a Chance With Me, and Oceans & Engines. The purpose of this study is to explain how lyrics and melody work together to show emotional meaning. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The data used are from the lyrics and musical elements of the three songs. This study uses lyrical analysis and musical semiotics to identify language and music features that express emotions. Results indicate that metaphor, hyperbole, and irony are the most frequently used figurative devices in the lyrics. Tonal variation, rhythm, and harmony further enhance the emotional expression conveyed in the songs. The combination of these elements creates a strong emotional connection between the songs and the listeners. This study gives a better understanding of how emotions are built through the combination of lyrics and melody in popular music.

Abstract

This article examines how slang shapes generational linguistic identity in Indonesia by comparing two media environments: MTV in the early 2000s and TikTok in the current digital era. Using sociolinguistic perspectives on media and youth identity, the study analyzes how each platform influences the creation, spread, and social meaning of slang. MTV, as a one-way broadcast medium, produced relatively stable slang tied to localized adaptations of global youth culture. In contrast, TikTok operates as a participatory, algorithm-driven space where slang changes quickly through abbreviation, blending, code-mixing, and sound alteration. These forms circulate virally and gain meaning through collective user practices. Despite differences in structure and pace, both eras show that slang functions as a marker of group belonging, humor, and generational distinction. The study demonstrates how shifting media infrastructures shape linguistic innovation and the ongoing negotiation of youth identity in Indonesian popular culture.

Abstract

This study investigates the grammatical functions and stylistic implications of inflectional morphemes in Owl City’s Ocean Eyes album (2009). Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research analyzes how these morphological markers contribute to the lyrical structure based on the framework of Fromkin, Rodman, and Hyams (2018). Data were collected from official song lyrics, resulting in 151 identified words containing inflectional affixes. The findings reveal a significantly uneven distribution: noun plural markers are the most dominant category (63.8%), followed by verb inflections (32.5%) and adjective inflections (approximately 4%). The high frequency of plural nouns creates the vast, concrete imagery characteristic of the "dream pop" genre. Additionally, the predominance of third-person singular -s and present participle -ing establishes a narrative tone of immediacy and continuous action. The study concludes that inflectional morphemes in Ocean Eyes function not only to maintain grammatical accuracy but also to construct the album's distinct vivid and surreal aesthetic.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of social media on the gender identity development of Generation Z, focusing on the opportunities and challenges these platforms present in shaping young people's understanding of gender. Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is the first generation to grow up in an era of pervasive digital connectivity, where social media platforms offer unprecedented spaces for self-expression and identity exploration. These platforms enable young people to engage with diverse gender identities, including non-binary and gender-fluid expressions, which are often marginalized in offline spaces. However, while social media provides opportunities for authentic self-expression, it also amplifies societal pressures to conform to idealized gender norms. The tension between digital empowerment and offline societal expectations creates a complex environment for Generation Z, where they must navigate conflicting gender narratives. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing documentary analysis of social media content and academic literature to identify key themes related to gender identity formation, societal pressures, and the intersectionality of gender with cultural, social, and psychological factors. The findings suggest that, while social media plays a critical role in empowering young people to explore diverse gender expressions, it also exposes them to identity conflicts and psychological challenges, particularly when offline societal norms resist these new identities. The study calls for greater support systems, both online and offline, to help young people navigate these complexities and embrace their gender identities freely and authentically.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the conversational implicatures in the movie Purple Hearts through maxim flouting. The study of implicature has become increasingly relevant in understanding how meaning is conveyed beyond literal expression, especially in audiovisual media where context and emotion play crucial roles. According to Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principle, effective communication is achieved when participants adhere to four conversational maxims: quantity, quality, manner, and relation (relevance). However, implicature arises when these maxims are deliberately or unintentionally not observed. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this research to analyze conversational implicatures in selected dialogues from the film. This research specifically focuses on the phenomenon of flouting maxims. Based on the research, the flouting of the Maxim of Relation was the most frequent, appearing in 4 out of 10 cases (40%). This was followed by the Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Quality, and Maxim of Manner, each occurring in 2 cases (20%). The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of pragmatic meaning and its implications for communication studies and film analysis.

Abstract

Parallel storytelling has become a prominent narrative mode in 21st-century cinema, reflecting a modern consciousness saturated with potentialities and choices. While existing scholarship has extensively mapped the structural mechanics (e.g., editing, montage) and cognitive effects (e.g., audience engagement) of narrative bifurcation, a significant gap remains in understanding how this form constructs a unified emotional coherence and fosters a specific subjective position for the viewer within divergent timelines. This study addresses this gap through a qualitative narrative analysis of the Netflix film Look Both Ways (2022). Employing an interdisciplinary framework that synthesizes narrative theory, affective studies, and social constructionism, the analysis reveals that the film’s dual narratives are not merely alternative realities but simultaneous emotional truths. The film achieves this through the meticulous integration of visual style (color palette, setting), narrative typography, and sound design, which function as a cohesive system of subjective cues. These elements guide the audience to navigate both timelines not as a dispassionate observer of branching paths, but as an empathetic participant in the protagonist’s holistic emotional journey. The study concludes that in Look Both Ways, bifurcation transcends its structural function to become an internalized emotional logic, offering a nuanced cinematic model for representing the lived experience of choice, anxiety, and self-discovery in contemporary life. This reframing contributes to film narrative theory by prioritizing phenomenological engagement over structural taxonomy. This study ultimately highlights that qualitative narrative analysis is the most appropriate method for examining how visual, auditory, and textual elements interrelate to produce emotional coherence across dual timelines, offering a more integrated understanding of parallel storytelling in contemporary film.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Language plays a central role in shaping and legitimizing professional identity across various social interactional contexts. This study aims to examine how the character Frank Abagnale Jr. constructs and sustains multiple professional identities through language use in the film Catch Me If You Can (2002). The analysis focuses on patterns of linguistic variation that emerge when the main character impersonates a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer, with particular attention to register management, speech style adaptation, and language functions within institutional settings. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach by analyzing selected dialogues transcribed from key scenes in the film. The analysis involves identifying lexical choices, levels of formality, interactional patterns, and communicative purposes that reflect the professional demands of each assumed role. The findings indicate that language use aligned with professional norms and expectations through the deployment of technical terminology, formal registers, and authoritative speech styles plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions of competence and gaining social recognition. These findings underscore that language functions as a primary performative resource in the construction of professional identity, in which membership and legitimacy within professional communities are interactionally achieved rather than solely determined by formal qualifications.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the role of derivational morphology in shaping diplomatic identity in President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the 80th United Nations General Debate. Despite extensive analysis of political discourse, the pragmatic function of derivational processes in diplomatic communication is still barely investigated. The study addresses this gap by identifying the types and communicative functions of derivational morphemes utilized in speech, elucidating how these forms facilitate Indonesia's diplomatic self-presentation. The research employs a descriptive qualitative methodology to evaluate the official transcript by Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, concentrating on representation, identity formation, and ideological positioning. The research identified 117 derivational forms, including nominalizations, adjectival derivatives, verbalizations, and prefixations. Nominal derivatives like humanity, prosperity, and equality conceptualize political issues as universal ethical ideals, but adjectival forms such as international, multilateral, and democratic situate Indonesia within global institutional standards. Verbal derivatives such as "strengthen" and "deepen" portray Indonesia as an active and progressive diplomatic entity, while negative prefixes like "injustice" and "irreparable" underscore an evaluative perspective and moral imperative. The study illustrates that derivational morphology serves as a strategic linguistic tool for constructing a principled, cooperative, and engaged diplomatic identity. The results enhance the expanding corpus of morpho-pragmatic and political discourse studies and provide a basis for comparative examinations in various international diplomatic settings.
