ABSTRACT Language plays a central role in shaping and legitimizing professional identity across various social interactional contexts. This study aims to examine how the character Frank Abagnale Jr. constructs and sustains multiple professional identities through language use in the film Catch Me If You Can (2002). The analysis focuses on patterns of linguistic variation that emerge when the main character impersonates a pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer, with particular attention to register management, speech style adaptation, and language functions within institutional settings. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach by analyzing selected dialogues transcribed from key scenes in the film. The analysis involves identifying lexical choices, levels of formality, interactional patterns, and communicative purposes that reflect the professional demands of each assumed role. The findings indicate that language use aligned with professional norms and expectations through the deployment of technical terminology, formal registers, and authoritative speech styles plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions of competence and gaining social recognition. These findings underscore that language functions as a primary performative resource in the construction of professional identity, in which membership and legitimacy within professional communities are interactionally achieved rather than solely determined by formal qualifications. ABSTRAK Bahasa memiliki peran sentral dalam membentuk serta melegitimasi identitas profesional dalam berbagai situasi interaksi sosial. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji bagaimana tokoh Frank Abagnale Jr. membangun dan mempertahankan beragam identitas profesional melalui penggunaan bahasa dalam film Catch Me If You Can (2002). Kajian difokuskan pada praktik variasi bahasa yang muncul ketika tokoh utama menyamar sebagai pilot, dokter, dan pengacara, dengan menyoroti pengelolaan register, penyesuaian gaya tutur, serta fungsi bahasa dalam konteks institusional. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan menganalisis dialog-dialog terpilih yang ditranskripsikan dari adegan penting dalam film. Analisis dilakukan melalui identifikasi pilihan leksikal, tingkat formalitas, pola interaksi, dan tujuan komunikatif yang mencerminkan tuntutan profesional masing-masing peran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan bahasa yang selaras dengan norma dan ekspektasi profesi tertentu melalui pemanfaatan istilah teknis, register formal, dan gaya tutur berotoritas berperan penting dalam membangun persepsi kompetensi dan memperoleh pengakuan sosial. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa bahasa berfungsi sebagai perangkat performatif utama dalam konstruksi identitas profesional, di mana keanggotaan dan legitimasi dalam komunitas profesional dibentuk secara interaksional, bukan semata-mata ditentukan oleh kualifikasi formal.

Penelitian ini mengkaji representasi makna kebebasan dan kematian dalam buku puisi Kertas Basah karya Dea Anugrah. Puisi sebagai bentuk sastra yang padat dan simbolik sering menjadi medium untuk mengekspresikan krisis eksistensial dan ketegangan sosial-politik. Dalam Kertas Basah, kebebasan digambarkan sebagai kondisi yang rapuh dan terkungkung, sementara kematian muncul sebagai motif yang merefleksikan keputusasaan, perlawanan, dan pencarian otonomi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pembacaan dekat (close reading). Analisis dilakukan melalui pendekatan struktural dan semiotik, khususnya teori semiotika puisi Michael Riffaterre serta perspektif eksistensialisme Jean-Paul Sartre dan Martin Heidegger. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kebebasan dan kematian tidak diposisikan sebagai tema yang terpisah, melainkan saling berkaitan, di mana kematian sering dimaknai sebagai bentuk kebebasan terakhir ketika tekanan sosial, psikologis, dan politis tidak lagi tertahankan. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memperkaya kajian sastra Indonesia kontemporer, khususnya dalam memahami suara puitik dan kritik eksistensial Dea Anugrah.

This study aimed to develop and validate an AI-Enhanced Multimodal Authentic Assessment model for evaluating EFL students' speaking skills, addressing the limitations of conventional, subjective methods. Employing a mixed-methods approach with a qualitative-dominant design, the research involved 35 university students from a Communication and Language study program. Data were collected through authentic video-based speaking tasks, AI-assisted linguistic analysis (using Google Speech-to-Text and a ChatGPT-based evaluator), detailed multimodal rubric assessments, and student perception questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted through three procedures: multimodal performance analysis using a validated rubric, comparative analysis of AI-generated linguistic metrics, and thematic analysis of questionnaire responses. Quantitative data from AI metrics and Likert-scale questionnaire items were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that multimodal assessment effectively captured verbal, prosodic, visual, and gestural aspects of performance. Concurrently, AI excelled at objectively analyzing micro-linguistic features such as pronunciation, speech rate, and vocabulary. The integration of human and AI evaluation created a comprehensive hybrid model that provided richer, more informative feedback. Furthermore, students expressed positive perceptions regarding the clarity and usefulness of the AI-generated feedback. The study concludes that this integrated assessment model is highly relevant for 21st-century pedagogy and enhances the accuracy and quality of oral performance evaluation. The implications suggest that educators can adopt this framework to create more objective, efficient, and holistic speaking assessments, ultimately fostering better learning outcomes.

This study examines the tension between social duty and personal desire in My Policeman (2022), focusing on how individual identity is shaped and constrained by systemic social pressure. The analysis addresses three central issues: the mechanisms of identity suppression experienced by Tom Burgess, the influence of moral and societal norms on personal choice, and the broader ideological implications of these conflicts. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study draws upon Feminist Literary Criticism, Queer Theory, and the Sociology of Literature to interpret the film’s narrative and character dynamics. The findings reveal that patriarchal expectations limit Marion’s autonomy, while heteronormative institutions compel Tom to repress his sexual identity, effectively criminalizing his private self. Rather than portraying social expectations merely as cultural pressures, the film presents the legal and moral framework of 1950s Britain as an active “policing force” that regulates private emotions and desires. This perspective offers a deeper understanding of how desire becomes socially monitored and ideologically controlled. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that these restrictive structures not only suppress personal freedom but also fracture emotional integrity and undermine authentic human relationships.

This study examines the representation of mental health in Chase Atlantic’s lyrics through emotional, psychological, and cultural dimensions, with a particular focus on its implications for literature teaching, critical reading, and cultural awareness in English Language Teaching (ELT). While previous studies have primarily explored the psychological effects of music on listeners, limited attention has been given to the representation of mental health in alternative R&B lyrics and its educational relevance. Using qualitative content analysis grounded in cultural representation theory, this study analyzes four songs “Consume”, “Swim”, “Stuckinmybrain”, and “Heaven and Back”. To identify recurring themes and symbolic representations of mental health. The findings reveal four dominant themes: emotional vulnerability, self-destruction and escapism, internal conflict and overthinking, and emotional resilience, reflecting the complexity of youth experiences related to anxiety, identify formation, and emotional struggle. The findings suggest that music functions not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a potential pedagogical resource for supporting crtitical literacy, cultural awareness, and reflective discussion in educational settings. This study highlights the relevance of Chase Atlantic’s lyrics as contemporary texts that may be utilized in ELT and literature classrooms to encourage engagement with issues related to mental health and cultural representation.

FKMT (Forum Komunikasi Majelis Taklim) merupakan komponen masyarakat sudah berkembang luas di masyarakat. Mereka merupakan komunitas yang menjadi bagian dari masyarakat bersifat spiritualitas dan pendidikan. Dengan begitu, tujuan utama pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah memberikan pelatihan bahasa Inggris bagi anggota FKMT. Adapun hasil dari pengadian masyarakat adalah pengabdian masyarakat ini juga mengembangkan metode pembelajaran persuasif dengan pendekatan train for trainer.. Pengabdian masyarakat berbasis riset juga menerapkan komponen pembelajaran andragogi berbasis komunitas. Pengabdian masyarakat ini juga berusaha mengembangkan komponen pembelajaran andragogi berbasis riset dan empiris yang sudah teruji karena sudah dipraktekkan.

This study examines the role of derivational morphology in shaping diplomatic identity in President Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the 80th United Nations General Debate. Despite extensive analysis of political discourse, the pragmatic function of derivational processes in diplomatic communication is still barely investigated. The study addresses this gap by identifying the types and communicative functions of derivational morphemes utilized in speech, elucidating how these forms facilitate Indonesia's diplomatic self-presentation. The research employs a descriptive qualitative methodology to evaluate the official transcript by Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, concentrating on representation, identity formation, and ideological positioning. The research identified 117 derivational forms, including nominalizations, adjectival derivatives, verbalizations, and prefixations. Nominal derivatives like humanity, prosperity, and equality conceptualize political issues as universal ethical ideals, but adjectival forms such as international, multilateral, and democratic situate Indonesia within global institutional standards. Verbal derivatives such as "strengthen" and "deepen" portray Indonesia as an active and progressive diplomatic entity, while negative prefixes like "injustice" and "irreparable" underscore an evaluative perspective and moral imperative. The study illustrates that derivational morphology serves as a strategic linguistic tool for constructing a principled, cooperative, and engaged diplomatic identity. The results enhance the expanding corpus of morpho-pragmatic and political discourse studies and provide a basis for comparative examinations in various international diplomatic settings.

The title of this study is "The Use of Request Strategy in the Movie Leave The World Behind by Sam Esmail." The purpose of this study is to analyze how characters in the movie make requests or ask someone to do something. The analysis is based on Trosborg's request theory using a descriptive qualitative approach. This study collected 18 data from dialogues in the movie. The analysis found that there are six request strategies used by the characters. The most frequently used strategy is the hint strategy, which allows characters to express their desires implicitly, avoiding the impression of being forceful or offending the listener. Besides the hint strategy, other identified strategies include questioning the hearer’s ability or willingness, statements of the speaker’s wishes and desires, statements of the speaker’s need and demands, statements of obligations and necessities, as well as the use of imperatives. The findings show that the variation in request strategies reflects the social dynamics and relationships among the characters, influenced by the specific context and communication objectives within the movie.

Reading is an essential skill in English language learning, particularly for vocational high school students who are expected to develop adequate English proficiency to support their academic and future professional needs. However, many students still experience difficulties in reading English texts due to limited reading habits, lack of interest, and low self-confidence. This study aims to investigate the use of short stories in improving students’ English reading skills at Private Vocational High School and to examine the role of learning creativity and self-confidence in supporting their reading performance. Data were collected through individual reading tests to assess students’ ability to understand and read English short-story texts. The findings indicate that several students still experienced difficulties in reading English fluently, mainly due to limited reading practice and low interest in English. The results also show that learning creativity and self-confidence contribute to students’ reading performance. Students with higher learning creativity and stronger self-confidence tended to demonstrate better focus, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension when reading English texts. Therefore, the use of short stories can provide an engaging learning medium to support the development of students’ reading skills while encouraging creativity and self-confidence in the English learning process.
