Abstract

The research was carried out to know the role played by teacher assistants in inclusive schools. The research method used for this study is a systematic review by capturing articles related to the research topic published between 2009-2019 through the electronic search engine Taylor and Francis Online. The initial search found 24 articles and then selected based on exclusive criteria, in which there were ten articles identified using thematic data analysis techniques. The results found that role of a teacher assistant is role pedagogic and non-pedagogic. Pedagogic roles include learning, giving assignments, helping students complete assignments, performing assignments, making IEP (individualized educational program), assessing and managing student behavior while non-pedagogic roles include emotional support, consulting, facilitating teachers, students, and parents. The results also show the importance of teacher assistants having competencies according to their educational background and building collaborative learning between classroom teachers and teacher assistants in the classroom. Limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Dyslexia is the most common specific learning disorder. Around 5% - 15% of elementary school students have dyslexia (APA,2013). Children with dyslexia might appear different at school and tend to get lower academic scores in comparison with theirpeers. Hence, this may increase the possibility for the children with dyslexia to have low self-esteem (Mash & Wolfe, 2016)because their peers’ opinions about them play an important role in affecting their self-esteem (Veenstra et al., 2007, dalamTaylor, Hume, & Welsh, 2010). The aim of this study is to give a representation about the effect of dyslexia to the self-esteemof elementary school students with the expectance to increase the awareness to detect and give early intervention to dyslexicchildren. The research method is literature review using articles obtained online from several databases. There were 5 selectedresearch articles with the criteria of the participants in the study aged between 6 – 12 years old, and the used the instrumentsto measure specific learning disorder and also self-esteem. The result of this literature review shows that dyslexia can affectthe self-esteem of elementary school students.

Abstract

This study is aimed to see the attitude towards person with disabilities of college students in Indonesia. Currently, the implementation of inclusive education has spread to the higher educational level. However, not all universities are ready to accept the presence of person with disabilities as campus residents. Various studies show different results regarding attitudes towards person with disabilities. This study used a quantitative approach with a questionnaire as a data collection tool. The questionnaire used were Multidimensional Attitudes toward Person with Disabilities (MAS). Analysis of attitude towards person with disabilities is seen as a single variable in this descriptive study. Participants in this study were college students in vocational or undergraduate program in Indonesia. The participants used in the data analysis were 530 people. The results showed that the attitude towards disabilities in Indonesia college students have positive attitudes (M1 = 3.36, M2 = 3.24, M3 = 3.63, M4 = 3.27). All components of the attitude shown by all respondents showed positive results. It is expected that college students show a positive attitude both cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally, and can accept persons with disabilities as part of the campus community and minimize discrimination that occurs in the campus area against persons with disabilities.

Abstract

When someone fails to achieve their potential, it is called underachievement. This phenomenon is predominantly observed for adolescent, particularly during the transition to middle school. This finding is observed because they are obligated to adapt to many internal and external changes. Several studies have confirmed that underachievement is caused by poor self-regulated learning skills. In this study, researchers adapted the Self-Regulation Empowerment Program (SREP) to help middle school student improve their self-regulation skills in learning. This program focuses on increasing the knowledge (cognitive domain) on self-regulated learning at the forethought phase by the means of SREP. This research adopts a single-case experimental design, particularly the A-B design. The analysis is performed by observing how well the participant performs in terms of success indicators, comparison between pretest and posttest scores, and qualitative analysis. Hence, the participant could achieve all success indicators in each session. This intervention program is effective in increasing knowledge on self-regulated learning at the forethought phase in empowerment and goal setting aspects. However, it is not effective in improving the time- management aspect. The procedures in this intervention can be adapted by parent and teachers to help the participant in improving their self-regulated learning ability.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of a Behavioral Skills Training program that aimed to improve the personal safety skills of a Down syndrome adolescent with mild intellectual disability. Personal safety was defined as an ability to recognize touch appropriateness, including four self- protective skills; resisting, removing, telling others, and reporting any inappropriate touch experienced. This single-subject design was administered over three days. The results demonstrated that the program was effective at improving the subject’s personal safety skills due to his achieving 97% of the maximum score. The subject was able to master the skills of recognizing, resisting, removing and telling others with a 100% score, while his reporting skill score was 83%. A repetition of this program has been recommended with a specific focus on developing reporting skills. To improve the program’s effectiveness further, in-situ training, training for test administrators, and the provision of reinforcements has been suggested.

Abstract

Abstract

The adaptation process for measurement of special needs student's social skills in inclusive primary schools was reported in this study. The Social Skills Improvement System was tested on 108 students aged 6-12 years. Social skills measurement include seven dimensions, that are empathy, cooperation, assertiveness, communication, self-control, participation, and responsibility. The adaptation process includes translation, back-translation, and expert judgment. Legibility tests then were conducted on 10 students with special needs. Reliability test shows that the measurement has an Alpha value of 0.833. Confirmatory Factor Analysis is done to see the loading factor of each item in the measuring instrument for students with special needs in inclusive primary schools. It was found that 24 items (three items with a loading factor below the good value is preserved) in the instrument had a factor loading ranging between 0.04-0.70 (RMSEA = 0.063, IFI = 0.89 and GFI = 0.80). Based on these results, it can be concluded that SSIS measuring instruments that have been adapted into Indonesian is valid and reliable to measure the social skill of special need primary students. The implications of the study findings are discussed for future research. Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of learning through animated video in increasing the knowledge and the behavioral intention of children aged 5-6 years towards children with disabilities. The effectiveness is then analyzed to see whether it can last for a certain period after the learning process. The results of data analysis showed that learning through animated video was quite effective in introducing disability because there was an increase in participants' scores on knowledge and behavioral intention toward people with disabilities. However, the results of data analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test show that there were no significant differences (p> 0.05), both in children's knowledge and behavioral intention toward people with disabilities, both before and after video screening. Two weeks after the intervention period, the results of data analysis also showed an insignificant result. A discussion of the results of the study and some recommendations for further research are written in the end.
