Abstract

The existence of smallholder cattle farming in Payakumbuh was studied. The research was conducted to obtain profiles of farmer demographics, cattle farming management, and reproductive performance. A survey was conducted in five sub-districts in Payakumbuh by interviewing 50 cattle farmers and conducting direct field observation. Smallholder farmers in Payakumbuh are typically an average of 45.02 years old, commonly senior high school graduates, occupied in the agricultural field with their own cattle ownership, experienced for 18.1 years, involved in cattle farming for additional income, and commonly focused on Simental crossbred raising. Cattle management was mainly categorized as good, as represented by feeding management (application of routine forage and concentrate, twice daily feeding frequency, and ad libitum drinking water), rearing (intensive rearing and natural weaning), housing (permanent housing structures, individual housing systems, and draw well water sources), and health (regular deworming). Reproductive performance (20.4 months age at first mating, 1.55 service per conception, 14.63-month calving interval, and 3.96 months for re-mating after calving) is also close to the ideal standard. To sum up, the presence of smallholder farmers is significant and could serve as a reference for farmers in other areas of West Sumatra. Enhancing applied technology is necessary to upgrade their cattle farming scale.

Abstract

Indigofera plants have significant potential to enhance livestock productivity and agricultural sustainability. Community services on using Indigofera plants as supplementary livestock feed have been conducted in the 50 Kota District. This activity aims to increase farmers' knowledge about the benefits of Indigofera plants and their cultivation techniques. The method used involves forming a service team and meeting with farmer groups. The program included information on the benefits of Indigofera plants, cultivation techniques, maintenance, and harvesting. Practical field training was also provided to farmers. The program resulted in a positive response from farmers, who actively participate in the education activities. They understood the potential of Indigofera plants in improving livestock productivity. These plants are nutrient-rich and can be used as a high-quality feed source. They are using Indigofera as supplementary livestock feed, which has a high potential to support healthy and efficient livestock production. This activity is a crucial step in promoting sustainable agriculture and livestock farming.

Abstract

Ashar Farm is one of the goat farming businesses in Payakumbuh City that has shown low progress. The population of Ashar Farm goats continued to decrease due to the death of sick goats or the slaughter of paralyzed goats. This phenomenon was due to farmers' need for knowledge in goat-raising management, especially health management. Goat long hoove was one of the causes of goat's feet leg disruption, which can cause infection, paralysis, and reduce the goat's productivity. This activity aimed to increase knowledge and coach farmers' skills in raising and maintaining goat health through hooves trimming training. This activity was carried out in several steps, i.e., preparation, counseling, training, and evaluation. The counseling method used was delivering material to the farmers about good farming practices and interactive discussions with farmers. Goat hooves trimming used simple equipment, which was easy to obtain nearby the farm. The activity was carried out according to the planning, and farmers participated well and enthusiastically, as seen from the many questions asked to the Team. Farmers have improved goat-raising management so that goats' health is maintained and their productivity increases. The evaluation results showed that farmers had adopted the information and knowledge conveyed by the Team during the implementation of activities, as seen from the rise in farmers' knowledge and skills. Farmers have skilled in hoove-trimming and apply it to their goats. They have also improved goat farming management so that the health of their goats is maintained and productivity increases.

Abstract

The community service program aims to improve the productivity of cattle farming in the Cendana farmer group in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra. The program focuses on raising awareness about the importance of providing minerals as a crucial component of animal feed. Minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium play a significant role in the growth and health of cattle. The program results reflect an improvement in farmers' understanding of the role of minerals in animal nutrition. It is expected that they will be able to enhance cattle productivity by ensuring the fulfillment of mineral requirements in their feed. This program has the potential to support sustainable farming efforts by preventing mineral deficiencies in cattle. The training imparted theoretical knowledge and taught proper mineral selection, correct dosages, and cattle's health and productivity benefits. This program encourages livestock owners to apply their newfound knowledge in their day-to-day farming practices. This community service program has the potential to significantly improve the quality and well-being of farmers in the region and support the overall growth of the livestock sector.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the reproductive performance of adult female buffaloes on smallholder farms in Akabiluru Subdistrict, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra. The method used was a survey through direct observation and structured interviews using questionnaires. Respondents were selected by purposive sampling, namely farmers with adult female buffaloes that have given birth at least twice, with 66 people with 71 female buffaloes.  The parameters observed included age at first mating, service per conception (S/C), age at first calving, and calving interval. Data were analyzed descriptively by calculating the average, standard deviation, and percent. The results showed that the age at first mating (33.17±7.84 months) and S/C (1.62±0.85) were within the optimal range. However, the age at first calving (46.17±10.36 months) and calving interval (23.46±7.03 months) were not optimal. Efforts are needed to improve farmers' reproductive management skills, feed quality, and technical training to improve buffalo reproductive performance and farmer welfare in Akabiluru Subdistrict.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the correlation between practical sentence mastery and learning activities with paragraph writing ability. The research method uses the correlation method. Data has collected after all the events in question directly. The technique used in collecting data is a test and questionnaire technique. The research data analysis technique uses a simple and multiple correlation coefficient statistical formulae. Based on the results of research conducted at SD 01 Ujung Gunung Ilir Menggala Tulang Bawang, it is known that learning activities and practical sentence mastery are very significant indicators and determinants of the ability to write paragraphs. It can be seen the results of the study show that the relationship between effective sentence mastery with the ability to write paragraphs can be seen from the value of the regression coefficient of 0.7599 or 75.99%. This value indicates that every 1 per cent increase in learning activity will increase the ability to write paragraphs by 75.99%, assuming other factors do not change. The relationship between effective sentence mastery and paragraph writing ability can be seen from the zero-order correlation coefficient of 0.8299 or 82.99%.
