Abstract

The growth of population will increase clean water demand. One of several way that can be done is by treating wastewater and reuse it as an alternative source. This research aims to determine the characteristics of greywater and analyze the removal chemical oxygen demand (COD), oil and grease using activated carbon. Abstract

Sago pulp is a waste from the sago starch industry. Sago pulp has not been used optimally and a small portion is used as animal feed, the rest is dumped into reservoirs or around rivers where sago is processed which can pollute the environment. Sago pulp can be used as solid fuel in the form of briquettes. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of sago pulp and analyze the potential for processing sago pulp into briquettes. The result showed the calorific value of sago pulp was 3383,51 cal/g. This result indicates that sago pulp can be used as a raw material for briquettes. Keywords: sago pulp, briquettes

Abstract

Peat water is surface water with striking characteristics because it has a high content of color and organic subtances, so it needs further processing so that it can be used as clean water. Adsorption using biosorbent is one method that has the potential to remove color and organic matter substances in peat water. This research aims to determine the characteristics of peat water and analyze the removal of colors and organic substances using biosorbent. Abstract

Contemporarily, Indonesia and Malaysia are the largest contributors of crude palm oil (CPO) in the world by up to 40%, and 37.3%, respectively. Furthermore, its production value this year reached 19.7 million tons, where each generates 2.5 m3 of wastewater. Meanwhile, of all the provinces in Indonesia specifically, Riau is the largest supplier for exports by up to 38%, generated from 225 palm oil mills, where a total of 6.3 million tons resulting in the generation of about 15.75 million m3 of wastewater, with organic content between the range of 30,000-60,000 mg COD/l. In addition, one of the uses of this wastewater includes anaerobic processes, with the double benefit of reducing COD concentrations, subsequently applying it as fertilizer, and also in the production of methane gas, as an alternative source of energy. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to observe the effect of bioreactor volume, scale-up on the performance of anaerobic hybrid bioreactors, in the treatment of mill effluents. The technology examined in this study was the anaerobic hybrid bioreactor with the dimensions of length 22 m, width 10 m, and depth 1.5 m, and a total volume of 330 m3, which is impermeable to oxygen, and a 250 m3 effective working volume. This was built and operated at a hydraulic retention time of 1 day, in the Palm Oil Mill of Riau, and the results showed the environmental conditions to range from a pH of 7.2 to 8.0, with temperatures from 320C to 350C, acetic acid of 774 mg/l to 1,180 mg/l, and alkalinity of 2,149 mg/l up to 2,400 mg/l. Furthermore, the performance of these reactors are shown by the highest COD removal efficiency of 77.8%, and a biogas test for the propensity of being applied as an alternative energy source obtained a methane gas concentration of 54%. Keywords: anaerobic, bioreactor, biogas, wastewater, performance, palm oil mill effluent

Abstract

Penggunaan boiler dan incinerator pada industri pengolahan sawit akan memberikan kontribusi polutan berupa partikulat (PM2.5 dan PM10) yang jumlahnya cukup besar. Partikulat merupakan polutan yang memiliki tingkat toksisitas tinggi sehingga bisa membahayakan kesehatan manusia dan lingkungan sekitar. Pemetaan sebaran partikulat perlu dilakukan sebagai salah satu usaha untuk memecahkan masalah dalam memantau dan mengevaluasi sebaran gas buang yang berbahaya terhadap masyarakat maupun lingkungan, sehingga strategi penanganan dampak pencemaran udara yang berasal dari pabrik kelapa sawit bisa ditentukan secara akurat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui besaran polutan yang berasal dari pabrik kelapa sawit serta memetakan pola penyebarannya pada lingkungan. Untuk dapat menggambarkan pola penyebaran polutan, dimulai dengan mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi penyebaran polutan tersebut seperti besaran polutan yang dihasilkan, stabilitas atmosfer, arah dan kecepatan angin. Data-data tersebut diperolah dari Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika Kota Pekanbaru. Untuk menggambarkan penyebaran polutan partikulat digunakan model simulasi yang telah diintegrasikan dalam software aermod. Dari hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa arah sebaran emisi untuk polutan PM2.5 dan PM10 dari hasil simulasi model cenderung mengarah ke arah tenggara dan utara dari sumber. Nilai konsentrasi PM2.5 hasil simulasi untuk 24 jam tertinggi untuk yaitu 9,26 µg/m3, untuk 1 tahun tertinggi yaitu 1,48 µg/m3. Nilai konsentrasi PM10 hasil simulasi untuk 24 jam tertinggi untuk yaitu 18,23 µg/m3, untuk 1 tahun tertinggi yaitu 2,87 µg/m3. Hasil simulasi tersebut menunjukkan konsentrasi polutan PM2.5 dan PM10 yang berasal dari boiler dan insinerator berada dibawah baku mutu masing masing polutan.The form of particulates (PM2.5 and PM10) which are quite significant. Particulates are pollutants that have a high level of toxicity that can endanger human health and the surrounding environment. Mapping of particulate distribution needs to be done as an effort to solve problems in monitoring and evaluating the distribution of hazardous gases to the community and the environment, so that the strategy for handling the effects of air pollution originating from palm oil mills can be determined accurately. This study aims to determine the amount of pollutants originating from palm oil mills as well as mapping the distribution patterns in the environment. To be able to describe the pattern of pollutant spread, it starts by identifying the factors that influence the spread of pollutants such as the amount of pollutants produced, atmospheric stability, wind direction and speed. These data were obtained from the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency of Pekanbaru City. To describe the spread of particulate pollutants, a simulation model is used which has been integrated into the AERMod software. The results of the study show that the direction of the distribution of emissions for pollutants PM2.5 and PM10 from the simulation model results tend to point southeast and north from the source. The PM2.5 concentration value for the 24-hour simulation results was highest for 9.26 µg / m3, the highest for 1 year was 1.48 µg / m3. The highest value of PM10 concentration simulation results for 24 hours is 18.23 µg / m3, the highest 1 year is 2.87 µg / m3. The simulation results show the concentration of pollutants PM2.5 and PM10 originating from boilers and incinerators are below the quality standards of each pollutant.

Abstract

The people in Ukui District, Pelalawan Regency meet their drinking water needs from bottled water, dug wells, river water and springs based on the 2018 RPIJM Pelalawan Regency. The quality and quantity of drinking water has not been guaranteed. The need for water in Ukui District in 2019-2038 is 111.24 L / sec, so it is necessary to plan a drinking water supply system for the next 20 years. The transmission system that carries raw water comes from the Air Hitam River. Based on the mass balance analysis, it is found that units capable of treating raw water with water quality are in accordance with PERMENKES number 492 of 2010. The processing units are planned for intake, pre-sedimentation, neutralization, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. This plan is also equipped with supporting buildings, namely chemical buildings, water towers, sludge treatment units and office buildings. The drinking water supply system plans a drinking water distribution pipeline network made using EPANET 2.0 software, namely the main pipe network. Abstract

Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) was high strength organic wastewater contained COD 50.000 – 70.000 mg/l. Mixed cultures used in this research is from cow dung. To increase concentration of bacteria on the inokulum and decreased lag phase on anaerobic treatment for treat it, the anaerobic mixed culture bacteria should be seeding process and acclimatized toward POME. The bioreactor of seeding process and acclimatization using circulating batch reaktor with worked volume 15 L and 5 L, respectively. Ratio wastewater to biomass bacteria was 70:30 (% V/V). This study use 3 variation of heat temperature of mixed culture anaerob that is 35° C for 1 hour; 70° C for 30 minutes; 100o C for 15 minutes with control. The parameter observed in this research was VSS and COD. Seeding process was doing in 5 days with highest VSS on day’s 5 was 8.280 mg/L and COD total concentration was 36.454 mg/L. Acclimatization process was doing on three stages, each of the 5 days. The most increase of VSS at the third stages of acclimatization was found within R1 (heat pretreatment inoculum 35° C for 1 hour) was 880 mg/L/day and the most reduction of soluble COD was found within R3 (heat pretreatment inoculum 100° C for 15 minutes) was 14,30%. Abstract

Empty fruit bunch (EFB) is a solid waste from palm oil industry which is 23% per ton fresh fruit bunch (FFB). Utilization of EFB is not optimal and it can be negative effect to environmental because of lignin content which hard to degradation. The best solution is utilization EFB so it can increase the positif value by doing composting This research aim to learn effect of anaerobic sludge from POME treatment toward C/N ratio In composting process there are 2 variations of addition wich are directly (S0 with 0.5 kg EFB spent mushroom) adding L1 about 1 kg, L2 about 2 kg, L3 about 3 kg, and L4 about 4 kg, and adding inderectly or in stage (S0 with 0.5 kg EFB spent mushroom) adding B1 about 2.5 kg, B2 about 0.5 kg, B3 about 0.75 kg and B4 about 1 kg. The result of lignin content in day 25 of pretreatment phase is 10.43% and the best result reach by composting with addition directly and addition indirectly  are adding 4 kg (L4) about 10.31% and adding with 1 kg (B4) about 14.14 and composting process stop in day 5. The conclusion in this research are pretratment by growing Coprinus comatus mushroom will help in degradation process and make the composting period be brief. Abstract

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) generated as waste by mushroom industries after the harvesting of mushroom. SMS is one of the most organic waste generated from agricultural waste that contain lignocelluloses and can be used in modifed for the adsorption of dyes, pollutants and heavy metals. In this study, SMS was modified using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and prepared as biosorbents. NaOH can be an efficient and economical modifier for lignocelluosic material. This study aims to determine the effect of the effect on NaOH concentration and contact time of iodine activation number and SMS surface area.Keywords: Biosorbent, NaOH, Spent Mushroom Substrate.

Abstract

Greywater is a waste from kitchen, bathroom, and laundry activities that contains high organic matter. The organic matter contained in the wastewater is utilized by the microalgae Chlorella sp. as a source of nutrient and its reduce the pollutant in wastewater. This study aims to count the number cells of Chlorella sp. which grew in suspension and attached to the Kaldness 1 (K1) biocarrier media and the removal of COD in domestic wastewater using Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (SBBR). The SBBR was operated on 4 cycles consisting of 30 minutes of filling time, 120 minutes of reaction, 45 minutes of decanting, and 120 minutes of stabilization time. This research was carried out with a working volume of 5 liters, 30% K1 kaldness media, and 25% suspended microalgae concentration with variations in stirring speed (40 , 60, and 80 rpm) and variation of settling time (30, 45 and 60 minutes). The best results showed a decrease in COD variations in stirring speed of 60 rpm and settling time of 60 minutes, COD removal efficiency was 78% from the initial COD concentration of 288 mg/L to 64 mg/L.Key Word : Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (SBBR), Domestic Wastewater, Chlorella sp., Biocarrier Kaldness 1.
