Abstract

The palm oil industry is currently experiencing very rapid development which is marked by the increase of CPO production resulting the increase of waste product. The main solid waste from the palm oil industry is Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) that contains high organic matter which has an impact on environmental pollution if not handled well. The composting process is one of the alternative method to reducing environmental pollution caused by waste EFB. However, the composting process takes a long time. Therefore, it is important to do a breakthrough to speed up the processing time. In this research, EFB composting process is done by adding a mixed culture that is useful as a starter and POME as a nutrition source. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of adding POME toward C/N ratio in the windrow aerob composting. In composting process takes place with variations by adding POME 0%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. Treatment with addition of 30% POME showed the best result with the value of C/N ratio was 11.66 with a pH of 6.98, a temperature of 32.33C and a moisture content of 40.6%. with 25 days period of time. The conclusion of this research is that the addition of POME has an effect on reducing the C/N ratio and accelerating composting time. Keywords: Composting Process, C/N Ratio, Empty Fruit Bunch, Palm Oil MillEffluent (POME), Windrow

Abstract

The need and consumption of the community for fuel oil (BBM) which is increasing from year to year is inversely proportional to its availability. One alternative energy solution to replace fossil energy is bioethanol and biohydrogen. POME has a high content of organic compounds such as carbohydrates, cellulose, sucrose, and starch so that it has the potential as a substrate for fermentation of bioethanol and biohydrogen. Anaerobic POME processing technology can increase the formation of bioethanol and biohydrogen. This research was conducted by analyzing the characteristics of POME through pH, demand for chemical oxygen (COD) and volatile suspended solids (VSS) and their potential in producing bioethanol and biohydrogen. From this study COD obtained a value of 32000 mg / L. Potential energy of bioethanol and biohydrogen formed through the degradation of organic matter in POME obtained respectively 1700 ml H2 / ml POME / day and 1.35g / L for 8 days Keywords: Acidogenesis, anaerobic, bioethanol, biohydrogen, palm oil mill effluent

Abstract

Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) has total COD concentration 44.444 mg/L, with the high value of total COD it is very suitable to be processed anaerobically. To maximize the process of degradation of the substrate by bacteria can be done by the process of adapting bacteria or which can be called the acclimatization process. This acclimatization process uses two types of substrate, glucose and POME. The use of bovine rumen which is a mixed culture bacteria as an inoculum can benefit because of the diversity of microorganisms contained in it. This study was conducted in Circulating Bed Reactor (CBR) as semi batch reactor with working volume of 5L, ratio of substrate : inoculum = 70:30 %(v/v). This research aimed to study the effect of pretreatment inoculum in order to increase substrate degradation. This process was done in five days for every substrate with removal efficiency of soluble COD and growth rate of VSS in acclimatization phase I was 83,33% and 1.333 mg/L/day and in acclimatization phase II was 75% and 2,000 mg/L/day, respectively.Keyword: Palm oil mill effluent, Acclimatization process, Mixed culture bacteria, soluble COD, VSS
