Abstract

Computational Thinking is a way of thinking that refers to the ability to solve problems using concepts used in computing. Computational thinking is a way of thinking in solving problems that students must develop in the digital era. This research aims to examine the importance of computational thinking in improving students' mathematical problem solving abilities. The type of research used is qualitative research using a literature study approach in the form of books, notes, journals, reports of relevant research results, as well as the results of observations. The results of the analysis show that it is very important for students to have computational thinking in order to improve their mathematical problem solving abilities. Computational thinking involves solving problems using a logical and systematic mindset that involves selecting and using algorithms, data representation, problem decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition and hypothesis testing. Computational thinking has become an important and essential skill for humans in the 21st century. Educators must advocate the importance of integrating learning with computational thinking concepts into the educational curriculum. Computational thinking has an important role in learning. This can be useful for improving mathematical problem solving abilities. Apart from that, computational thinking can also develop critical, creative and analytical thinking skills in solving complex problems, both in the context of computing and everyday life.

Abstract

Improving the quality of education in Indonesia can be developed through the implementation of educational reform. One form of educational reform can be carried out by using a learning approach that can help teachers produce experts using the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approach. Initial findings reveal that only around 47.8% of SMA N 2 Medan students (class This research aims to see the effectiveness of the STEM approach in improving the critical thinking skills of SMA N 2 Medan students. The research method used is an experimental design with Non Equivalent Control Group Design. The research subjects were students of SMA N 2 Medan. The results showed that the sig (2-tailed) Equal variances value was assumed to be 0.000 < 0.05. Therefore, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted, which means there is a significant difference in critical thinking abilities after students use the Equal variance method. The STEM-PBL approach, compared with the innovative K13 approach. The average critical thinking skills scores of the control class in the pre-test and post-test were 38 and 79.5. The coefficient remains at 0.676 and is significant at 0.000. This means the correlation is positive. Therefore, learning with a STEM approach has proven to be effective in improving the critical thinking skills of SMA N 2 Medan students.

Abstract

The increasingly rapid development of technology and information has enabled transformation in the fields of education and teaching. This is clearly seen in the current curriculum expectations, where one of the expected learning outcomes from elementary school to middle school is that students are expected to have computational thinking skills. For this reason, the aim of this research is to look at students' abilities related to their computational thinking abilities. in solving the problems given. The results of the answers given by students are then analyzed according to the four foundations of computational thinking. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. This research was carried out in the Mathematics Education study program, Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara in the Number Theory course. The sample used was 12 students taking Number Theory courses. The instrument used is a description of 2 questions which are given during the learning process on mathematical induction material. The students' answer sheets were then analyzed to get a picture of students' computational thinking abilities based on the four foundations. The results of this research show that students' computational thinking abilities still need to be improved, such as decomposition abilities which are 41.67% and abstraction abilities which are 58.33%. Overall, students' computational thinking abilities are still in the sufficient ability category.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research aims to improve students' ability to understand mathematical concepts through the application of the Discovery Learning model supported by snake and ladder games. The research subjects consisted of 29 students. The instruments used in this study include observation sheets, written tests, and documentation. The data obtained was analyzed through several processes, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The success of the mathematical concept comprehension test in this study is determined by two criteria, namely the average score of the mathematical concept comprehension test results and the percentage of students who achieve a minimum completeness score. The average score of the mathematical concept comprehension test results in cycle I and cycle II was 67.5 and 78.5 respectively. The percentage of students who completed the first and second cycles were 65.5% and 80.1% respectively. This shows that in the second cycle, the average score of the mathematical concept comprehension test results and the percentage of students who completed it have met the set criteria. Thus, the application of the Discovery Learning model supported by the snake and ladder game has proven successful in an effort to improve the ability to understand mathematical concepts of students in grades IX-4 of UPT SMP Negeri 8 Medan

Abstract

This paper discusses an e-handout of STEAM-based circle material to improve mathematical connection skills at UPT SMP Negeri 41 Medan. The research and development design (R&D) uses the Thiagarajan model. The research results imply that the STEAM-based e-handout met the criteria of valid, practical, and improved mathematical connection skills. Material experts provided an average score of 81% (very valid), linguists provided an average of 80% (fairly valid), and media experts provided an average score of 100% (very valid). The average score of the teacher's response to the practicality of the e-handout was 75% (practical) and the student's percentage was 67% (practical), which means that teachers and students have a positive response. Mathematical connection skills at UPT SMP Negeri 41 Medan met the criteria of effectiveness. It is shown in the second trial in which the learning objectives that were achieved from the three mathematical connection indicators exceeded 75% and students’ learning completeness was 96%. The improvement in students' mathematical connection skills with an average N-gain score in trial I and trial II indicate an improvement score of 0.134. It can be concluded that the developed e-handout is valid, practical, and effective, as well as it can improve mathematical connection skills.

Abstract

The government limited social activities during the Covid-19 pandemic; as a result, the learning process was no longer carried out face to face. Therefore, an appropriate alternative was needed to facilitate the learning process. This study aimed to design valid Lectora Inspire–based matrix learning materials for grade XI high school students. This research was part of development research utilizing the 4D model by Thiagarajan. However, this study was limited only to the defining and designing stages. The defining and designing stages were conducted through a literature review followed by measuring the level of validation of the Lectora Inspire–based learning materials. This research was conducted for three months, from July to October 2020. The instrument used was a validation sheet given to four material experts and two media experts for the Lectora Inspire–based learning materials. The results showed that the learning materials developed based on Lectora Inspire had met the valid requirements. The results of observations from the validators toward the materials and media showed good scores after the materials were revised as suggested by the validators. The Lectora Inspire–based learning materials developed had many advantages compared to learning materials created using other programming applications.

Abstract

Variables and expressions serve as bridges where students cross from arithmetic to algebra. Although variables and expressions are important concepts in middle school and high school mathematics, they are topics that many students find challenging, and many, in fact, do not develop a thorough understanding of these topics. This study aims to explore the epistemological obstacles students face in understanding and interpreting the concepts of variables and expressions. Based on these objectives, a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach was chosen to achieve this research objective. The subjects in this study were 8th grade middle school students in the city of Medan, Indonesia. Tests and interviews were used to collect data. The data obtained were analyzed using an inductive approach. The data obtained are presented in narrative and graphical forms. Based on the research results obtained, six types of student errors in solving problems related to the concept of variables and expressions were identified. Overall, students' limitations in understanding and interpreting variables as something unknown is one of the triggers for epistemological obstacles. Teachers should give chances for pupils to debate and explain variables and expressions in the classroom to assist students gain a comprehensive knowledge of these mathematical tools.
