Abstract

Chronic stress is known to cause neuronal damage in the hippocampus, particularly in the CA1 and CA3 areas, which play a crucial role in memory and learning. One way to prevent this damage is by using natural ingredients with neuroprotective properties. This study aimed to compare the effects of Centella asiatica and Mentha piperita leaf extracts, either singly or in combination, on the number of normal neurons in the hippocampus of male mice exposed to stress. Twenty-five male mice were divided into five treatment groups: K− (control without treatment), K+ (stress without extract), P1 (stress + Centella asiatica extract), P2 (stress + Mentha piperita extract), and P3 (stress + combination of Centella asiatica and Mentha piperita). Stress was induced using a restraint stress method, while the extracts were administered orally at the prescribed dosage. After the treatment period, the hippocampus was removed, and histological slides were prepared with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining to count the number of normal neurons in the CA1 and CA3 areas. The results showed that the K+ group experienced a significant decrease in the number of normal neurons compared to the K− group. Administration of gotu kola (P1) and mint (P2) extracts increased the number of neurons compared to K+, but not to the same extent as K−. The combination of Centella asiatica and Mentha piperita extracts (P3) showed the most optimal effect, with the number of normal neurons approaching that of the negative control group. These findings indicate that the combination of Centella asiatica and Mentha piperita has synergistic potential in protecting hippocampal neurons from stress-induced damage. Further research is needed to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying this neuroprotective effect.

Abstract

Alcohol in the body is metabolized into acetaldehyde with the assistance of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). Acetaldehyde, the metabolic byproduct of alcohol, plays a role in the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). The effects of alcohol can lead to damage and death of spermatogenic cells caused by acetaldehyde, which is produced through the breakdown of alcohol by liver cells. Increased ROS levels generated by free radicals in sperm producing tissues may cause damage to the sperm membrane, thereby disrupting its stability and function. High concentrations of ROS may also exert toxic effects on sperm quality and function. This study aimed to examine the activity of Zuriat fruit (Hyphaene thebaica) extract on sperm quality and DNA fragmentation in male mice (Mus musculus) administered Balinese Arak. This research employed an experimental study design using a post-test only control group design. The results show that Zuriat fruit (Hyphaene thebaica) extract at doses of 1 g/kg body weight and 2 g/kg body weight significantly influenced sperm count, motility, viability, morphology, and DNA fragmentation (p < 0,05).

Abstract

Smoking has a serious negative impact on health because cigarettes contain harmful chemical compounds. To combat these negative effects, using natural antioxidants such as Dewadaru fruit has become the research focus. Dewandaru contains high antioxidants, namely flavonoids, anthocyanins, saponins, and tannins, which can fight free radicals in the body. The trachea is an air channel between the larynx and bronchi. To identify the activity test of dewandaru fruit (Eugenia uniflora L.) in the trachea of male mice (Mus musculus L.) exposed to cigarette smoke. This study employed true experimental di laboratory with post-test only control group design, probability sampling. The data were analyzed by using Shapiro Wilk and followed by the ANOVA test and Duncan's test. The finding showed that administering a Dewadaru fruit filter could maintain the histopathology of the male mice trachea exposed to cigarette smoke (P<0.05). Dewandaru fruit filter (Eugenia uniflora L.) has activity in the trachea exposed to cigarette smoke among male mice. Using a Dewadaru fruit filter also affects the presence of cilia, goblet cells, epithelial height, and lumen diameter in the trachea of male mice.
