Abstract

Budidaya ikan lele (Clarias gariepinus) dengan sistem akuaponik merupakan inovasi budidaya yang mengintegrasikan akuakultur dan hidroponik dalam satu sistem sirkulasi tertutup yang ramah lingkungan dan efisien. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Desa Fadoro, Kecamatan Mandrehe, Kabupaten Nias Barat pada tanggal 29 April 2025 oleh mahasiswa magang dengan tujuan mengetahui pertumbuhan tanaman kangkung dan kelangsungan hidup ikan lele dalam sistem akuaponik menggunakan kolam terpal. Sistem akuaponik memanfaatkan limbah ikan sebagai nutrisi tanaman, sementara tanaman membantu menjaga kualitas air kolam. Penggunaan aerator terbukti meningkatkan kadar oksigen terlarut yang penting bagi respirasi ikan dan mikroorganisme pengurai amonia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pertumbuhan ikan lele dan tanaman kangkung yang cepat dan sehat, dengan efisiensi penggunaan air hingga 90% serta pengurangan limbah budidaya. Padat tebar ikan dan pemilihan tanaman yang tepat berperan penting dalam menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem dan kualitas air. Sistem ini sangat cocok diterapkan di lahan sempit maupun daerah perkotaan, memberikan peluang usaha baru dan meningkatkan kesejahteraan ekonomi masyarakat. Dengan pengelolaan yang baik, akuaponik dapat menjadi solusi budidaya berkelanjutan yang menguntungkan secara ekonomi dan ramah lingkungan. Abstract

Fitoplankton dan zooplankton memiliki peran yang sangat penting dalam menjaga fungsi ekosistem perairan melalui kontribusinya terhadap produktivitas primer dan transfer energi dalam jaring-jaring makanan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji variasi spasial, komposisi taksonomi, serta interaksi ekologis komunitas fitoplankton dan zooplankton di ekosistem estuari tropis Sungai Nou, Gunungsitoli, Sumatera Utara. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan pada empat stasiun yang mewakili gradien estuari hingga pesisir, disertai pengukuran parameter lingkungan utama seperti suhu, salinitas, oksigen terlarut, pH, nitrat, dan fosfat. Sebanyak 13 genus fitoplankton (didominasi Skeletonema, Thalassiosira, dan Ceratium) serta 5 genus zooplankton (didominasi copepoda) berhasil diidentifikasi. Kelimpahan fitoplankton berkisar antara 5.490 hingga 6.000 ind L⁻¹, sedangkan kelimpahan zooplankton berkisar antara 1.190 hingga 2.030 ind L⁻¹. Nilai indeks keanekaragaman Shannon–Wiener (H’ = 2,20–2,54) menunjukkan stabilitas komunitas sedang hingga tinggi dengan dominansi rendah (C < 0,3). Analisis korelasi Pearson memperlihatkan hubungan positif signifikan antara kelimpahan fitoplankton dan konsentrasi nutrien (NO₃⁻ dan PO₄³⁻), serta hubungan negatif dengan salinitas, yang mengindikasikan bahwa masukan nutrien dari sungai merupakan penggerak utama produktivitas primer. Analisis PCA memperkuat temuan bahwa gradien nutrien dan salinitas menjadi faktor penentu utama struktur komunitas plankton. Dominasi diatom dan copepoda menunjukkan transfer energi yang efisien dalam jaring makanan planktonik serta menegaskan pentingnya Perairan Nou sebagai daerah pembesaran alami yang mendukung perikanan lokal. Temuan ini memberikan dasar ilmiah untuk pengelolaan perikanan berbasis ekosistem serta strategi pemantauan nutrien guna menjaga keseimbangan ekologis dan produktivitas perairan estuari tropis. Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems are essential components of coastal environments and play a strategic role in maintaining the stability and sustainability of marine ecosystems. This study aimed to analyze seagrass species diversity and the role of seagrass biodiversity in supporting marine ecosystem conservation in the Nias Islands, North Sumatra. The research was conducted at three locations: La’aya Village (North Nias Regency), Fodo Waters (Gunungsitoli City), and waters near Sirombu Port (West Nias Regency), using the quadrat transect method during the lowest low tide. Data analysis included density, frequency, cover, Important Value Index (IVI), and the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′). The results identified five seagrass species, namely Syringodium isoetifolium, Cymodocea serrulata, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule uninervis, and Thalassia hemprichii. Syringodium isoetifolium was the dominant species with the highest IVI across all study sites. The seagrass diversity index values ranged from 1.55 to 1.57, indicating a moderate level of diversity and a relatively stable community structure. These findings suggest that seagrass ecosystems in the Nias Islands are still functioning effectively and play a crucial role in supporting coastal stability, marine biodiversity, and as a scientific basis for sustainable marine ecosystem management and conservation. Keywords: coastal ecosystem; marine conservation; Nias Islands; seagrass biodiversity Abstrak Ekosistem lamun merupakan salah satu komponen penting ekosistem pesisir yang memiliki peranan strategis dalam menunjang keberlanjutan dan konservasi ekosistem laut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tingkat keanekaragaman jenis lamun serta peranan biodiversitas lamun dalam mendukung upaya konservasi ekosistem laut di Kepulauan Nias, Sumatera Utara. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada tiga lokasi, yaitu Perairan Desa La’aya (Kabupaten Nias Utara), Perairan Fodo (Kota Gunungsitoli), dan Perairan dekat Pelabuhan Sirombu (Kabupaten Nias Barat). Metode yang digunakan adalah metode transek kuadrat pada saat surut terendah, dengan analisis struktur komunitas meliputi kerapatan, frekuensi, penutupan, Indeks Nilai Penting (INP), serta indeks keanekaragaman Shannon–Wiener (H′). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima jenis lamun, yaitu Syringodium isoetifolium, Cymodocea serrulata, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule uninervis, dan Thalassia hemprichii. Syringodium isoetifolium merupakan spesies dominan di seluruh lokasi dengan nilai INP tertinggi. Nilai indeks keanekaragaman lamun pada ketiga lokasi berada pada kategori sedang, dengan nilai H′ berkisar antara 1,55–1,57. Kondisi ini menunjukkan bahwa struktur komunitas lamun relatif stabil dan masih mampu menjalankan fungsi ekologisnya secara optimal. Keanekaragaman lamun yang masih terjaga berperan penting dalam mendukung stabilitas ekosistem pesisir, penyediaan habitat biota laut, serta menjadi dasar ilmiah dalam perencanaan pengelolaan dan konservasi ekosistem laut di Kepulauan Nias secara berkelanjutan. Abstract

Clean water quality is a fundamental component in sustaining aquatic ecosystems and supporting human life. Increasing pressures from pollution, climate change, and weak water resource management systems require integrated and sustainable environmental management strategies. This article aims to examine various aquatic environmental management strategies that support the sustainability of clean water quality through a literature review approach. The study applies a systematic literature review method by analyzing relevant national and international scientific journals focusing on ecosystem-based management, environmental technology innovations, climate change adaptation, as well as regulatory and community participation aspects. The findings indicate that ecosystem-based approaches, such as mangrove conservation and integrated coastal management, play a significant role in maintaining ecological functions and improving water quality. Furthermore, technological innovations including biofilters, membrane systems, and Internet of Things (IoT)-based real-time monitoring significantly enhance the effectiveness of water quality control and monitoring. However, challenges remain in the form of weak institutional coordination and limited community participation, which hinder effective policy implementation. Therefore, a holistic approach integrating ecological, technological, policy, and social dimensions is essential to achieve sustainable clean water management and long-term aquatic ecosystem resilience

Abstract

The highly profitable freshwater commodity in Indonesia is the dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus). In the cultivation process of catfish, feed plays a very significant role, contributing about 70% of all operational costs, with protein as the main component determining the appetite and growth of catfish. This study aims to describe the appetite response of dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus) to the provision of 30% protein pellet feed by observing feeding behavior and feed consumption patterns during the rearing period. The research was conducted in an observational manner at the community aquaculture pond in Hilina'a, Gunungsitoli. This study lasted for 2 months from April to May 2025. Fish were fed three times a day, and the feeding response was observed and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the fish responded well to the feed provided, marked by a high level of enthusiasm during feeding and a stable eating pattern throughout the study period. The controlled environmental conditions also supported the fish's appetite to remain optimal. This research shows that 30% protein pellet feed can stimulate appetite and has the potential to improve the efficiency of catfish farming. Recommendations include the use of 30% protein feed along with good environmental management to achieve optimal and sustainable farming results.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas teknis budidaya rumput laut, kemampuan kewirausahaan, serta penguatan kelembagaan ekonomi masyarakat pesisir melalui pendekatan edukatif partisipatif. Program dilaksanakan di Desa Siofabanua, Kecamatan Tuhemberua, Kabupaten Nias Utara dengan sasaran masyarakat pesisir dan kelompok pembudidaya rumput laut. Metode yang digunakan meliputi sosialisasi, pelatihan teknis budidaya Eucheuma cottonii, pelatihan manajemen usaha dan pemasaran, pendampingan praktik lapangan, serta monitoring dan evaluasi partisipatif. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan teknis peserta dalam budidaya rumput laut, meningkatnya pemahaman kewirausahaan dan manajemen usaha, serta terbentuknya kerja kolektif dalam pengelolaan demplot budidaya. Program ini juga mendorong kesadaran masyarakat terhadap peluang ekonomi berbasis sumber daya pesisir yang berkelanjutan. Dari perspektif pendidikan, kegiatan ini berkontribusi pada penguatan model pembelajaran berbasis masyarakat melalui integrasi edukasi, praktik lapangan, dan pendampingan berkelanjutan, sehingga dapat menjadi referensi dalam pengembangan program pemberdayaan masyarakat pesisir berbasis ekonomi biru.

Abstract

Catfish (Pangasius pangasius) farming continues to grow along with increasing market demand, but is constrained by the high cost of commercial feed, which can reach 60-70% of total production costs. On the other hand, the fish processing industry generates large amounts of waste in the form of heads, viscera, bones, scales, and fins that have the potential to be processed into protein-rich natural feed. This article aims to examine the effect of utilizing fish waste as natural feed on catfish growth based on research results from the last five years. The method used is a literature study by searching national and international scientific articles published between 2021-2026 through the Google Scholar, Garuda, and Sinta-accredited journal databases. The results show that fish waste processed into meal, silage, or fish oil contains high protein and essential fatty acids, which can increase absolute weight gain and specific growth rate, and lower the feed conversion ratio in catfish and several other freshwater fish species. The use of fish waste as natural feed also provides economic benefits in the form of reduced production costs and environmental benefits in the form of reduced pollution from organic waste. Standardization of processing methods and appropriate dosages is needed to optimize the benefits of fish waste as natural feed sustainably.

Abstract

Intensive fish farming faces challenges such as disease, low feed efficiency, and declining water quality. This article aims to examine the effect of adding prebiotics and probiotics to feed on the growth performance of farmed fish through a literature review of various scientific journals. The results of the review indicate that probiotics improve gut microbiota balance, digestive enzyme activity, growth, and feed efficiency, while prebiotics support the growth of beneficial bacteria and boost the fish’s immune system. The combination of both (synbiotics) provides better results than using them separately. Thus, the addition of prebiotics and probiotics has the potential to be an effective and environmentally friendly nutritional strategy to improve the growth, health, and productivity of farmed fish.

Abstract

Water quality is one of the most important environmental factors affecting the growth and survival of catfish (Clarias sp.). A decline in water quality due to the accumulation of uneaten feed, fish feces, and organic matter can increase ammonia concentrations and reduce dissolved oxygen levels, thereby inhibiting fish growth. This study aimed to analyze the effect of polluted water conditions on the growth of catfish during a 30-day rearing period. The treatments consisted of clean water as the control (P1) and polluted water (P2). The observed parameters included absolute length gain, absolute weight gain, and survival rate (SR). The results showed that catfish reared in clean water exhibited better growth than those reared in polluted water. Fish in the control treatment achieved an average length gain of 4.2 cm and a weight gain of 28.5 g, while fish in polluted water showed a length gain of 3.1 cm and a weight gain of 21.4 g. The survival rate was also higher in the control treatment (96%) than in the polluted water treatment (90%). These findings indicate that poor water quality can inhibit the growth of catfish, although this species is still able to survive under suboptimal environmental conditions. Therefore, proper water quality management is essential to support optimal growth and improve the productivity of catfish culture.

Abstract

Catfish (Clarias sp.) is one of the freshwater aquaculture commodities with high economic value and increasing market demand in Indonesia. However, intensive cultivation is often faced with problems of decreased growth performance, low feed efficiency, and high risk of disease infection due to high stocking density. One strategy widely developed to overcome these problems is the application of probiotics in feed and culture media. This article aims to systematically review the role of probiotics on growth, feed efficiency, immune response, and water quality in catfish culture based on a literature study of various national and international scientific publications. The method used is a narrative literature review of publications from 2008-2025 obtained through Google Scholar, Sinta, and indexed international journal databases. The results show that probiotic application, whether from the genus Bacillus, Lactobacillus, or multistrain combinations, consistently improves specific growth rate, reduces feed conversion ratio (FCR), increases survival rate, improves immunological parameters such as phagocytic activity and leukocyte levels, and maintains water quality by suppressing ammonia levels. The appropriate dose and strain type of probiotics are determining factors for application effectiveness.
