Abstract

Aquaculture plays a vital role in meeting the global demand for animal protein, yet the dependency on expensive imported feed ingredients remains a significant challenge. Optimizing the use of local feed ingredients is a strategic approach to enhance sustainability and cost-efficiency in fish farming. This research aims to optimize the composition of local feed ingredients to achieve 30% protein content in farmed fish feed. The formulation involves rice bran, corn bran, fish meal, and tofu dregs, selected based on local availability and protein content. The methodology includes analysis of the protein content of raw materials, formulation testing, and physical evaluation of feed. The results show that the pellets produced have nutritional quality that meets the target, good physical stability, and cost efficiency of up to 40% compared to commercial feed. This research makes a significant contribution in supporting the sustainability of the fish farming industry and reducing dependence on imported raw materials.

Abstract

The pace of global environmental change and the intensification of human activities have put significant pressure on marine ecosystems, threatening the sustainability of many species that are important both for ecosystems and the economies of coastal communities. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the application of genetic technologies in the conservation of endangered marine species, focusing on environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring, CRISPR genetic engineering techniques and population genetic analysis. The method used was a literature review that examined current academic sources related to genetic technologies and their implementation in conservation. Findings show that eDNA is a highly effective tool in species and habitat monitoring, and has been successful in specific cases such as Napoleon fish and green turtles in Raja Ampat. In contrast, CRISPR techniques offer the potential to improve the genetic resilience of species, despite significant regulatory and ethical challenges. The implications of this study emphasize the need for strong policy support and international collaboration to address these challenges and optimize the use of genetic technologies in more effective conservation strategies in the future.

Abstract

This research was conducted at Malaga Beach, Siwalu Banua II Village, Gunungsitoli Idanoi District, Gunungsitoli City, North Sumatra Province, with the aim of determining the feasibility of beach tourism objects from the limiting factors of the Tourism Suitability Index Value (IKW). This research was carried out for 1 month, namely from the beginning of March to the beginning of April 2021. The method used in this research was the purposive sampling method. The analysis parameters used are depth, beach type, beach width, bottom water material, current speed, beach slope, water brightness and beach land cover. Based on the results of observations, it shows that the Malaga Beach tourist attraction has good potential because it has a wide sand beach and has not big waves. The research results show that the Tourism Suitability Index (IKW) value is 58.16% and is classified as S3 (Conditionally Suitable) level of suitability. This value provides information that the tourist attraction is in the appropriate category conditionally for the feasibility of its development. The condition for the development in question is the appropriate use of potential, namely the potential width or breadth of the beach as well as the presence of shady pine and palm trees by creating comfortable shelters such as tourist tents, gazebos, children's toys. Thus, Malaga Beach, Siwalu Banua II Village, Gunungsitoli Idanoi District, Gunungsitoli City, North Sumatra has good potential to be developed into a recreational tourism and children's play location, but is not suitable for swimming tourism.

Abstract

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic country, providing abundant biodiversity potential. The rapid development of chemistry, phytochemistry, and pharmacology has increased the research and application of various plants in the health sector. Phytopharmaca is a standardized herbal medicine that has proven its efficacy through clinical trials. Various types of marine biota that are easy to find have been proven to contain bioactive compounds that can potentially develop phytopharmaceuticals based on biological resources. The development of phytopharmaceuticals made from marine plant raw materials has yet to be widely developed. Limiting factors often found are references to pharmaceutical standardization and the required research funding. However, this does not rule out the possibility of realizing phytopharmaceutical products from marine plants that meet standards and clinical trials. Therefore, the aim of the explanation regarding research, types, and potential of marine biological resources in phytopharmaceuticals is to provide information and learning media.

Abstract

This study explores the culture of tubifex worms (Tubifex sp.) as natural feed to enhance the growth of catfish larvae (Clarias sp.). Tubifex worms are known for their high nutritional content, with protein levels reaching 55-66%, crucial for larval growth. The culture activity was conducted in Bawosalo’o, Nias Barat, from May 2 to May 31, 2025. Observations showed an increase in larval length from 0.72 cm on the first day to 1.1 cm by the seventh day, with a survival rate of 60%. Water quality, including temperature and pH, was well-maintained, supporting larval survival. Additionally, using tubifex worms as natural feed not only improved growth but also contributed to sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture practices. This research concludes that tubifex culture is an effective method for catfish larvae cultivation and recommends enhancing knowledge of breeding techniques and water quality management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the growth of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultivated in a concrete pond system in Dusun IV, Fadoro Lasara Village, Gunungsitoli City. The concrete pond system was chosen for its advantages in land efficiency, ease of management, and ability to maintain stable water quality. The research method employed a quantitative experimental approach over 60 days, with 200 Nile tilapia as the study subjects. The parameters observed included absolute weight and length gain, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and survival rate (SR). The results showed that the average weight of the fish increased from 5.12 grams to 98.46 grams, with a length increase of 12.5 cm. The SGR was recorded at 4.29% per day, FCR at 1.38, and SR at 96.5%. These results indicate that the concrete pond system can support optimal tilapia growth. This study recommends the application of concrete ponds as an efficient aquaculture alternative, particularly in areas with limited land and resources. This system has proven to be adaptive to local conditions and contributes to increased productivity and income for aquaculture farmers.

Abstract

The problem of plastic waste in the ocean is a global problem that endangers the quality of sea water and the marine ecosystem as a whole. This article discusses the relationship between how to manage plastic waste and how it affects seawater quality, such as pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), and biological oxygen demand (BOD5). Research from the literature shows that plastic waste, especially microplastics and macroplastics, can affect the chemical and physical quality of sea water. For example, a decrease in pH levels due to accumulated organic acids, local heating due to sunlight absorbed by plastic, and changes in salinity due to interaction with fresh water. In addition, the accumulation of plastic causes a reduction in dissolved oxygen (DO) and an increase in BOD5 levels, which is detrimental to marine ecosystems. Decreased water quality can endanger marine species because these species are very dependent on the chemical balance of the water. Despite much research on the impact of plastic waste on water quality, there remains a gap in understanding the long-term impacts and the need for more comprehensive plastic waste management. Further research is needed to resolve these issues and create more effective management strategies.
