Abstract

Background of the study: Ethnoparenting is a parenting model shaped by cultural values embraced by a community. In Madura, ethnoparenting plays a crucial role in nurturing children's character and social intelligence from an early age. Traditional Madurese parenting emphasizes togetherness, mutual cooperation, respect, and discipline within both family and community settings. Aims and scope of paper: This study aims to explore how the values embedded in Madurese ethnoparenting contribute to the development of children’s social intelligence. It focuses on the application of cultural practices in early childhood upbringing and their implications for interpersonal and social competencies. Methods: This study employed a qualitative ethnographic approach to explore Madurese parenting practices in fostering early childhood social intelligence. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving parents and educators from various early childhood education centers in Bangkalan. The data were analyzed using reduction, display, and conclusion drawing to identify cultural patterns and parenting strategies that support social intelligence development. Results: The findings indicate that Madurese ethnoparenting fosters multiple dimensions of social intelligence in early childhood, including communication skills, empathy, cooperation, politeness, adaptability, and a sense of social responsibility. These attributes are instilled through daily routines and interpersonal interactions within both familial and communal settings. Contribution: This study underscores the pivotal role of culturally informed parenting practices in cultivating socially competent children. It emphasizes the value of preserving and adapting Madurese ethnoparenting traditions in modern parenting contexts. By highlighting the connection between culture and child development, the research contributes to broader discussions on culturally responsive parenting and early childhood education.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Background of the study: Gross motor skills constitute one of the essential developmental domains in early childhood education. Their development is equally important as cognitive, social–emotional, and language development. Therefore, early childhood educators must possess the ability to design learning experiences that effectively stimulate children’s physical and motor development. However, learning activities targeting gross motor skills in many early childhood institutions remain limited, particularly in the use of structured, engaging, and competition-based play that can enhance children’s balance, agility, and strength. Aims and scope of paper: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of competition-integrated obstacle games in improving the gross motor skills of children aged 4–5 years at TK Khadijah Surabaya. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using an experimental method. A pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest model was implemented. The sample consisted of 31 children in Group A at TK Khadijah Surabaya selected through a non-probability sampling technique. The instrument used was an observation sheet assessing three gross motor categories: balance, agility, and strength. Data analysis included prerequisite tests—normality and homogeneity—and hypothesis testing using a paired sample t-test. Reliability testing yielded a coefficient of 0.966, normality values were 0.130 (pretest) and 0.196 (posttest), and the homogeneity test produced a value of 0.217. Results: The paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 at alpha = 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. The mean pretest score was 36.5, while the mean posttest score increased to 55.1, demonstrating that competition-based obstacle games effectively enhanced children’s gross motor development. Contribution: This study provides empirical evidence that competitive obstacle play can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy for stimulating gross motor development in early childhood. Practically, the findings offer guidance for early childhood educators in designing engaging, play-based learning activities that optimize children’s physical development in educational settings.

Abstract

The development of digital technology presents both opportunities and challenges for parents in assisting early childhood. A lack of understanding about the correct and safe use of digital media often exposes children to inappropriate content and lacks optimal guidance. This study aims to improve parents' understanding of the function of digital parenting, how to provide guidance, and the wise use of digital media for early childhood. The research method used a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects consisted of parents of students at Pembina Pejagan State Kindergarten, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection techniques used in this study were observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique in this study used technical triangulation. The results of the study indicate that parents' understanding of digital guidance has increased, based on participatory observation and input from participants. Parents increasingly understand the importance of limiting screen time, selecting educational applications, and active communication when children use digital devices. This activity shows that direct education through socialization and guidance successfully improves parents' digital literacy. A practical workshop as a follow-up program is recommended so that parents' skills can continue to develop and be consistently applied within the family environment
