Abstract

Introduction: Dental caries continues to be a major oral health problem among preschool children. The decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmf-t) index is widely used as an indicator to assess caries status in this population. Gender has been suggested as a factor that may influence both the prevalence and severity of dental caries. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine and compare the dmf-t index among preschool children according to gender. Material and Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design with a purposively selected sample of 31 preschool children. Dental caries was assessed using the dmf-t index. Data were analyzed descriptively, and comparative analysis was conducted using the Mann-Whitney test. Results and Discussions: The results showed that the prevalence of dental caries among preschool children was 67.74%, with a mean caries score of 3.55 ± 4.06 falls within the moderate category. The prevalence of dental caries was higher in girls compared to boys (69.23% : 66.67%), whereas the mean caries score was higher in boys (4.39 ± 4.90 : 2.38 ± 2.14). Statistical analysis indicated no significant difference in the dmf-t index between boys and girls. Conclusion: Gender did not show a significant difference in caries experience. although the prevalence of dental caries was higher among girls, the mean caries experience was greater in boys.

Abstract

Background: Tooth loss (edentulism) is a common oral health problem among older adults that negatively affects chewing ability, aesthetics, and quality of life. Posterior teeth, particularly molars, are more susceptible to loss due to their functional load and anatomical position. Biological factors such as age and gender may contribute to variations in tooth loss; however, community-level evidence remains limited in specific local settings.Purpose: This study aimed to describe the pattern of tooth loss and explore its potential association with age and gender among elderly individuals in Banjar Kebon Kori, Kelurahan Kesiman, East Denpasar. Methods: A descriptive observational study was conducted involving 17 elderly participants selected through total sampling. Data were collected through direct clinical oral examinations. Statistical analysis was primarily descriptive (frequency and percentage), and bivariate analysis was performed using Fisher’s Exact Test due to the small sample size. Results: Tooth loss was predominantly observed in posterior teeth, particularly the first molars (21.6%). Females showed a slightly higher proportion of tooth loss (53.4%) compared to males (46.6%). A higher proportion of tooth loss was also observed among participants aged ≥70 years compared to those aged 60–69 years. However, these findings should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size (n = 17) and unequal group distribution. Conclusion: This study suggests that tooth loss among elderly individuals tends to be more frequent in posterior teeth and may vary according to age and gender. However, the findings are exploratory and do not establish causal relationships. Further studies with larger and more representative samples are needed to confirm these observations. Keywords: Age, Elderly, Gender, Posterior teeth, Tooth loss.

Abstract

Dental caries and gingivitis remain public health issues with high prevalence in Indonesia across various age groups. This study analysed differences in the incidence of caries and gingivitis between children aged 6-10 years and adults aged 30-36 years based on screening activities at the Saraswati Dental and Oral Hospital in Denpasar. Using an analytical observational design and a cross-sectional approach, 89 respondents were selected via purposive sampling, comprising 44 children and 45 adults who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through clinical examinations using the def-t index for children, the DMF-T index for adults, and the Gingival Index (GI) to assess gingival condition. Data were analysed descriptively and bivariately using the Mann-Whitney test, showing that the caries index was significantly higher in the adult group (DMF-T 297) compared to children (def-t 129) (p<0.05). Gingivitis in both groups was classified as moderate, with a slightly higher proportion in children (28%) compared to adults (25%). It was concluded that caries is cumulative with in-creasing age, whilst gingivitis is more influenced by current oral hygiene practices; therefore, promotive and preventive strategies tailored to age-specific cha-racteristics are required to improve oral health.

Abstract

The caries in primary teeth is assessed by def-t index. One factor thought to be associated with caries status is gender, although findings on this are inconsis-tent. This study employed an observational design with a descriptive quantitative approach. A total of 31 pupils from Class 1B at Saraswati 1 Primary School in Denpasar were selected using purposive sampling. A direct examination of the pupils’ primary teeth was carried out by dental health personnel using the 2018 Riskesdas Dental Health Survey form. The caries status among boys was predominantly in the very low category, whereas among girls, the distribu-tion of caries status was more even. The Spearman’s test showed a correlation coefficient of r=0.225 with p=0.224 (p>0.05), indicating no significant associa-tion between gender and caries status based on the def-t index. It was concluded that there was no significant association between gender and the def-t In-dex category among Year 1B pupils at Saraswati 1 Primary School in Denpasar. The more dominant factors included children’s health behaviours. Further-more, parents’ roles in oral health literacy, supervision of toothbrushing, as well as environmental and economic factors were found to be more decisive in determining children’s caries scores than gender.
