Abstract

Abstract

The plantation sector is one of the area utilization activities that can significantly contribute to the income of rural communities, both in terms of providing employment and earning potential foreign exchange. These conditions are not supported by digitally integrated regional development information. This study aims to map the potential development of coffee plants in the Sambas sub-district based on the physical properties of the land presented in digital maps. The research was conducted in six villages within the Sambas sub-district administrative area using purposeful sampling. Within every village, three locations were chosen for soil sampling plots, each plot covering an area of 1 ha, and the sampling was done diagonally. The distance between each sampling plot is 5 km. Soil samples from each plot were then analyzed in the soil laboratory. The analysis results were processed using quantum GIS software to generate a digital map of land development potential. The results show a variety of land capability classes (classes II, III, and IV) with their respective limiting factors, namely drainage, flood threat, and soil texture. Land capability class II-d2 consists of locations A1, A2, A5, and A6. Land capability class III-d3O2 is at location A3, and capability class IV-t3.d4.O3 is at location A4.

Abstract

Food security is a challenge in almost all developing countries with low to middle-income levels, including Indonesia. Rice, as one of the primary food sources and a pillar of Indonesian society, has shown a decline in both production and productivity in recent years. This decline in rice production and productivity is attributed to the conversion of productive rice fields due to the high input costs required for each planting season. This situation arises from the limited ability of farmers to make accurate production estimates over large areas and within short timeframes. This research was conducted in Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan, in 2024 with the goal of estimating rice production using satellite imagery technology and geographic information systems (GIS) in Sambas Regency. The data used were obtained through sampling methods in each sub-district, and the imagery data were acquired from Landsat 8 satellites, processed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) combined with GIS, and analyzed using QGIS 3.36.3 software. The analysis indicates that the coefficient of determination for rice productivity is highly influenced by the NDVI value, which is 90%, with the formula y = 3.9453x + 0.5287. Consequently, the average rice production in Sambas Regency in 2024 is 2.36 tons/ha.Keywords : imagery, NDVI, Qgis, rice

Abstract

Monitoring mangrove vegetation is an essential initial step in mangrove management. The aim of this study was to observe the spatial and temporal changes in the coverage and extent of mangrove vegetation in the Jawai District. The method used in this research was remote sensing through geometric analysis of changes in coverage and the density of mangrove vegetation using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Green Chlorophyll Index (GCI) as indicators of mangrove vegetation health. The results of the analysis using Landsat 8 satellite imagery recorded in 2013 and 2023 as input data revealed that the extent of mangrove vegetation coverage experienced both increases and decreases in certain villages. A total of six villages saw an increase in mangrove vegetation covering 171.2 hectares, including Dungun Laut, Sentebang, Sei Nyirih, Parit Setia, Pelimpaan, and Sarang Burung Kuala. Meanwhile, five villages experienced a reduction in mangrove vegetation area, comprising Bakau, Sarang Burung Usrat, Sarang Burung Kolam, Sei Nilam, and Sarang Burung Danau. The village with the largest increase in mangrove area was Parit Setia, with an addition of 45.075 ha, while the greatest decrease occurred in Sarang Burung Usrat, with a reduction of 32.917 ha. Furthermore, the NDVI and GCI values showed a similar pattern, with an increase in index values from 2013 to 2023. When the NDVI value increases, the GCI value also increases. The density of mangrove vegetation based on NDVI ranged from 0.0249 to 0.4300 in 2013, and increased in 2023, ranging from 0.0451 to 0.5117. The GCI values in 2013 ranged from 0.0030 to 1.1628, and in 2023 they ranged from 1.0499 to 2.5708.

Abstract

Plastic waste is a serious environmental problem that requires immediate handling, especially in educational environments. SD Negeri 22 Seladu faces the challenge of managing plastic waste, especially used bottles, which have not been utilized optimally. This condition shows the need to increase students' awareness of plastic waste management and the provision of environmentally based learning media. This service activity aims to minimize plastic waste, increase students' understanding of waste management, and create learning media in the form of aquariums from used bottles. The method used includes preparation stages, delivery of materials, and practice of making aquariums from used plastic bottles. Activities are carried out with a participatory approach to actively involve students. The results of the activity show that students are able to understand the concept of recycling, increase creativity, and have a higher awareness of the importance of protecting the environment. This program provides significant educational and environmental benefits. By using used bottles as a learning medium, this activity can be used as a model for environmental education in other schools to support sustainable plastic waste management.
