Abstract

Background: Students as young women are vulnerable to iron deficiency anemia. Anemia in adolescent girls can be caused by factors such as the menstrual cycle, diet, and nutritional intake Objectives: This research aims to analyze the relationship between the menstrual cycle, diet, intake of protein, iron, and vitamin C with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls Methods: This observational analytical research involves 104 female students as a sample. Anemia is assessed by measuring the respondent's Hb level. Nutritional intake was assessed using the 24-hour recall method. Data analysis was carried out using the Spearman rank test Results: The research results stated that there was a relationship between the menstrual cycle (p-value 0.000); diet (p-value 0.000); protein intake (p-value 0.012); iron intake (p-value 0.001); Vitamin C intake (p-value 0.002) with the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls. Conclusion: The existence of this relationship means that the menstrual cycle, eating patterns, and nutritional intake are the causes of anemia in adolescent girls

Abstract

Lack of iodine and zinc intake in adolescents disrupted the metabolic process of iron in their bodies, leading to decreased hemoglobin levels in the blood and increasing the risk of anemia among adolescent girls. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between iodine and zinc intake and hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls at SMK PGRI 13 Surabaya. This research was a quantitative study with an analytic observational design. The research sample consisted of 104 respondents selected using Stratified Random Sampling. Data on iodine and zinc intake were collected using a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), and hemoglobin levels were measured digitally using the Point of Care Testing (POCT) method from capillary blood samples. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank statistical test. The results showed that the average iodine intake was 63.68 mcg, and zinc intake was 4.24 mg, both classified as deficient. The average hemoglobin level was 12 g/dL. Spearman Rank test results indicated a significant relationship between iodine intake and hemoglobin levels (p-value = 0.032), and between zinc intake and hemoglobin levels (p-value = 0.030). The correlation coefficient values for iodine and zinc intake with hemoglobin levels were 0.210 and 0.213, respectively, indicating that the strength of the relationship between iodine and zinc intake and hemoglobin levels was weak.

Abstract

Menstrual cycle disorders are common reproductive health issues among adolescent girls and are often associated with hormonal imbalances. Central obesity, characterized by abdominal fat accumulation, can disrupt hormonal regulation, while poor sleep quality may decrease melatonin production, both of which can affect the menstrual cycle. This study aimed to examine the relationship between central obesity and sleep quality with the menstrual cycle. A cross-sectional design was used involving 82 female students selected through stratified random sampling from a population of 240 students at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Tulangan Sidoarjo. Waist circumference was measured using the midline method, sleep quality was assessed through a questionnaire, and menstrual cycle data were collected for the last three months. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rank tests. The results showed that 34.1% of respondents experienced central obesity, 35.4% had poor sleep quality, and 45.1% had oligomenorrhea. There was a significant relationship between central obesity and sleep quality with the menstrual cycle. It is recommended that adolescent girls adopt healthy lifestyles and regulate sleep patterns to maintain reproductive health and prevent menstrual disorders.

Abstract

The nutritional intake of students in Islamic boarding schools during Ramadan is often dominated by carbohydrates, with limited attention to balanced macro- and micronutrient consumption. This imbalance may affect health and learning concentration. This community engagement program aimed to enhance students’ understanding of balanced nutrition during fasting based on physiological principles. The activity was conducted at Pondok Pesantren Assalafi Al Fithrah Surabaya through three phases: initial survey, interactive educational sessions, and follow-up evaluation. Thirty-one students participated in both pretest and posttest assessments. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 54.19 to 66.77 (p = 0.005), indicating a statistically significant improvement. The participatory educational approach proved effective in enhancing students’ nutritional literacy. The program suggests that physiology-based nutrition education can serve as a strategic approach to improving health awareness in Islamic boarding schools. Integrating nutrition education into institutional food management policies is recommended to promote sustainable healthy eating habits.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population, so the majority of Muslims are very concerned about the halal food they consume. However, the existing halal food is not necessarily in line with the Muslim population. Therefore, there is significant data in research on consumer behavior in consuming halal food. Related studies or literature especially regarding the role of religion on consumer behavior is still minimal. Thus, this research is expected to be useful for students, both consumers and producers, as well as the government and other related parties as a reference in formulating policies related to halal industrial production, especially processed food products. This paper mainly aims to examine the comparison of Muslim consumer behavior towards halal products that are in the majority and Muslim minorities, in terms of determinant factors. Data processing techniques include quantitative and qualitative analysis data obtained in 2020 from UNUSA Nutrition Students and Non-UNUSA Nutrition Students.
