Abstract

This study examines the pragmatic functions of language and its interplay with non-verbal acts in the formulation and implementation of Minak Pengalun, a traditional herbal medicinal technique originating from the Karo culture of Indonesia. The study uses qualitative research methods, such as ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and participant observations, to reveal how verbal expressions, gestures, and symbolic rituals coalesce to safeguard cultural heritage, convey ecological knowledge, and facilitate holistic healing. Employing Speech Act Theory, the study delineates five pragmatic functions of language in Minak Pengalun: representative acts communicate ecological and procedural knowledge, directive acts direct preparation and ritual execution, commissive acts signify practitioners' dedication to cultural authenticity, expressive acts demonstrate spiritual and emotional connections, and declarative acts affirm and reinforce cultural norms. The interplay between verbal communication and non-verbal rituals, including ingredient preparation and ritual gestures, guarantees the procedural precision and cultural congruence of the activity. The findings underscore Minak Pengalun as a comprehensive tradition in which language serves as a medium for meaning-making, connecting the spiritual, cultural, and ecological aspects of Karo identity. This research underscores the significance of safeguarding both linguistic and ceremonial elements of ancient traditions amidst cultural evaluation while also promoting additional comparative studies and techniques for intergenerational transmission. The study highlights the dynamic relationship between language and action and emphasizes the importance of Minak Pengalun in preserving cultural and natural legacy.

Abstract

The rapid growth of technology has changed information media, making internet news easily accessible and extensively consumed. To attract readers, numerous online news platforms adopt clickbait methods, typically designing headlines designed to generate curiosity or emotional responses. This study explores the language tactics utilised in clickbait headlines published by IDN Times during the 2024 Indonesian Regional Elections (Pilkada) week. Using a qualitative descriptive technique and content analysis, the study analyzes 25 headlines picked by purposive sampling. Zhang’s rhetorical framework, which categorizes rhetorical elements into Hyperbole, Insinuation, Puzzle, and Visual Rhetoric, serves as the basis for the analysis. The statistics suggest that Insinuation is the most often utilised rhetorical component (12 occasions), followed by Hyperbole and Puzzle (10 instances each), and Visual Rhetoric (9 instances). These rhetorical methods effectively engage readers and shape their perspectives, particularly in the setting of political news. While clickbait boosts reader engagement, it also raises questions about media credibility and ethical journalism practices, especially when headlines overstate or mislead. This study contributes to the understanding of how language promotes public interaction with online news and underscores the need of media literacy in interpreting digital information. Future study could expand the scope to include larger datasets, numerous news platforms, or longitudinal analysis to explore the shifting dynamics of clickbait in digital media.

Abstract

This study explores women's empowerment in literature, focusing on the interplay between tradition and modernity across different cultural contexts. Employing comparative literary analysis, this research examines Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid and Mangalua by Idris Pasaribu. The methodology involves thematic and narrative analysis, where thematic analysis identifies key motifs related to empowerment, resistance, and gender roles, while narrative analysis examines how each character's story arc reflects broader societal norms. Through these analyses, the study highlights how each protagonist navigates societal expectations and challenges gender norms within traditional and modern frameworks. Findings indicate that both novels use women’s empowerment as a lens to critique and reshape cultural expectations, offering insights into gender roles across varied societies. The study concludes with recommendations for further research on cross-cultural gender narratives, acknowledges the limitations of focusing on only two novels, and suggests broader literary comparisons for future studies.

Abstract

This essay explores a strategy for teaching pupils to listen better. It necessitates that students practice listening both within and outside of the classroom. Several activities can be carried out, and various media can be employed to provide children with listening activities to hone their listening abilities. Watching movies is one of the students' favorite pastimes. Students are introduced to the language's context and vocabulary through the film. The task of writing a film report was given to the class after the movie. Giving pupils the task of watching movies and writing reports, since many individuals enjoy doing so on what they viewed, greater enjoyment is anticipated. But before they write a report, they must comprehend the movie itself. Before creating and presenting a film report in class, they may need to watch the movie twice or even more to comprehend it fully. To complete this activity, the students must hear the characters' words, expressions, and sentences. This activity has a variety of advantages. Students can learn pronunciation and practical phrases from native speakers by viewing movies. Along with these tasks, students had to compose a summary of the movie, decipher the meaning of useful words, comprehend the story's moral, and give their reports.
