Abstract

Climate change has significantly influenced the spread of infectious diseases, particularly in coastal regions where rising temperatures, increased precipitation, and extreme weather events create favorable conditions for disease transmission. This study examines the relationship between climate change and the prevalence of vector-borne and waterborne diseases in coastal communities, addressing gaps in previous research that primarily focused on macro-level epidemiological trends. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from multiple coastal regions, analyzing climate variables and disease incidence rates. The findings reveal a strong correlation between increasing temperatures and the expansion of disease vectors such as mosquitoes, contributing to higher cases of malaria and dengue fever. Additionally, poor drainage systems and inadequate sanitation were found to exacerbate the spread of cholera and typhoid fever. While community-driven adaptation strategies—such as improved water storage and mosquito control—play a role in mitigating risks, institutional responses remain fragmented, limiting long-term disease prevention efforts. This study underscores the urgent need for climate-resilient public health infrastructure, decentralized early warning systems, and the integration of public health and climate adaptation policies to reduce disease outbreaks in vulnerable coastal populations. Future research should explore longitudinal data on climate-disease interactions and assess the effectiveness of policy-driven interventions. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how climate change exacerbates public health risks and highlight the necessity for proactive, evidence-based strategies to enhance resilience in coastal regions.

Abstract

Background: Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are still a major cause of high morbidity and mortality, with more than 12 million cases per year worldwide. Indonesia is one of the countries with a high burden of ARI with 6 million cases. Antibiotic resistance in bacteria that causes ARI is also increasing, so it is important to evaluate the rationality of antibiotic use. Objective: To evaluate the use of antibiotics in pediatric patients with acute respiratory infections (ARI) using the Gyssens method at Medan Hospital. Methods: Descriptive research with Gyssens method. Results: The majority of patients were toddlers with an age range of 12-59 months (47.7%). Male (64.6%), and female (35.4%). The most common diagnosis was pneumonia with a percentage of 90.8%. Ceftriaxone injection (78.5%) was most commonly used. The Gyssens method showed that category 0 was 52.3%, IIA 24.6%, and IIIB 23.1%. Conclusion: The use of antibiotics in pediatric ARI patients at Medan Hospital is mostly rational.

Abstract

The medial longitudinal arch is a part of the plantar foot with clinical significance. Three variations of the medial longitudinal arch consist of normal, low, and high arches. These variations are caused by intrinsic factors such as gender. Failure to form the normal medial longitudinal arch leads to poor posture and balance. Variation in the shapes of the medial longitudinal arch can be assessed using footprints, namely the arch index. This study aims to identify the variations in the medial longitudinal arch between young adult males and females. The research is descriptive-analytic with a cross-sectional study design. The subjects are young adults aged 18-22 years. Sampling using the simple random sampling technique with a sample size of 54 participants. The medial longitudinal arch shape was evaluated using the footprint method with the arch index. The majority of participants (72.2%, 39 participants) were female, according to the results. The most age group was 21 years old 23 participants (42.6%). The highest average arch index (0.29) was in the male participants. The most prevalent normal medial longitudinal arch shape was observed in females 28 participants (71.8%). In males, the low arch was most common among 11 participants (73.35%), while the high arch was found in 5 female participants (12.8%). The Mann-Whitney statistical test showed p < 0.05. This study concludes that the medial longitudinal arch forms vary between young adult males and females.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is the second infectious disease in the world after Covid-19 and the thirteenth leading cause of death worldwide in 2021. Indonesia has the second highest number of TB patients in the world after India. TB can be cured with regular treatment for 6 months. Prolonged treatment can cause TB patients to become bored and lead to drug withdrawal, causing drug resistance problems. The better the patient's knowledge about TB disease, length of treatment, side effects and complications can influence the decision to encourage patients to adhere to their treatment. The success of Tuberculosis treatment is influenced by patient compliance in taking medication. The type of research used was observational analytic with a cross sectional approach to determine the relationship between knowledge and adherence to taking medication. . Respondents of this study were pulmonary TB patients at Tanjung Rejo Percut health center as many as 51 people. This study used a questionnaire in its implementation. The analysis test used is the gamma test. The results of the study showed a relationship between knowledge and compliance with taking antituberculosis drugs in pulmonary tuberculosis patients. (p value 0.023). The results of the study showed that the majority of male gender, productive age, the final category of treatment was complete (92.2%), namely cured (53.0%), not cured (39.2%) and incomplete (7.8%). The majority of patients' knowledge was 78.4% in the good category and the majority of TB patients' medication compliance was 64.7% in the high compliance category

Abstract

Refractive errors are the third most common cause of blindness. Uncorrected refractive errors in children will disrupt their learning process. Good parental knowledge and action regarding disorders will be able to prevent vision problems in children. This study aims to study the correlation between parents' level of knowledge and actions regarding refractive errors in children. The design of this research is cross sectional analytic. The sample for this research was parents of students at SD Negeri 101751 Klambir V grades 1 and 2. The sample size was 61 respondents. The sampling technique used simple random sampling. The instrument used in the research was a questionnaire. The data obtained was tested using Spearman analysis. The results of this study show that there is a significant correlation between the level of parental knowledge and actions regarding refractive errors in children with a value of p < 0.05 (p = 0.000). The close relationship between variables is moderate with a value of r=0.478. The level of parents' knowledge of refractive errors is significantly related to their actions. It is hoped that there will be a promotional program from the health department to provide education or counseling regarding eye health, and visual acuity screening, for early detection of refractive errors in children.
