Abstract

This study focuses on the language characteristics of multilingual female teenagers in Bandung, a city with a diverse ethnic population. The research is based on a small sample of 16-18 year old students from a private high school and uses a descriptive-analytic method to analyze recorded conversations as primary data and interviews as secondary data. The study categorizes and analyzes the language variations and characteristics of the teens' speech, using theories from Lakoff (2017) and Holmes (2022). The results suggest that some, but not all, of the language features proposed by Lakoff are present in the teens' speech. Additionally, the study identifies six language functions used, including lexical hedges, tagging questions, empty adjectives, reinforcers, emphasis stress, and rising intonation. Due to the participants' multilingualism, the conversations often involve a mix of Indonesian, local (Sundanese), and English codes.

Abstract

Corpus linguistics allows researchers to discover the nature of language use through lexical bundles throughout genres, registers, and language varieties. With the fast-changing development of the internet, the language of websites has become one fascinating variety to investigate. In the contexts of German language studies, Goethe-Institut is a worldwide German cultural institution dedicated to teaching German and propagating German culture, with its website becoming a well-known source for German-related studies. Under these considerations, this research is interested in analyzing the German language patterns in Goethe-Institut website by examining their frequency and structure of lexical bundles. Using a mixed-method approach, the corpus was found to be dominated by lexical bundles within the ranges of three- and four-bundles, with the least quantity of lexical bundles in the range of five. The majority of the four-word lexical bundles on this site fell into the categories of noun, preposition, or verb groups. Meanwhile, the adverb, conjunction, and adjective groups were the fewest to appear in the four-word lexical bundles. The language in the Goethe-Institut was shown to contain semi-formal expressions according to the frequency of use of the prepositions, nouns, verbs, and the active sentence expressions. The utilization of standardized German language and basic vocabulary indicates that this website is designed to be accessible for everyone, including German language learners. The language usage also demonstrates that the Goethe-Institut is especially a user-oriented website with expressions that evoke a ‘sense of belonging’.

Abstract

Multiword sequences are a language pattern that occurs when a bunch of words emerge in a similar register. In research papers conducted by lecturers and students, different topic areas and indexes has created various characteristics of lexical bundles. The method of this research is qualitative, combining corpus design to identify the sequence of words within the text. The corpus data were generated from five different indexing journals, yet the topic is linguistics. Initially, the whole papers were converted to text format to deal with readability in the program used. The program used was Orange Apps version 3.27 by applying the textable, data table, and text mining menus. The sources of the data are emphasized as being academic research indexed in SINTA 5, published in 2020. The main theory of used in this research is that of Biber’s (2007) which discusses the main characteristics and number of criteria for defining word strings. This observation resulted in 207.896 characters and 33.636 words. There were 4,273 words based on the pre-processing analysis result, which included transformation, tokenization, and PoS-tagging. From a total of 4,273 words, virus, deixis, and slang were the most frequently occurring. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the majority of journal articles are about viruses and slang. They pertain to the prevalent topic of pandemics at the time the journals were published. When the process of writing a journal article is in progress, this information may aid the authors in identifying the journal’s keywords and most frequent words.

Abstract

The media plays a crucial role in shaping gender representation and influencing societal perceptions of gender roles. While several studies have examined the diachronic view of language use in relation to gender representation, there is a dearth of research specifically focusing on the Sundanese language in this line of inquiry. Filling this research gap, the present study aims to analyze the usage patterns of three Sundanese nouns—mojang, pamajikan, and wanoja—that pertain to women, with the goal of exploring the representation of women in the corpus of the Sundanese magazine Manglé. Through a comprehensive corpus-based analysis, this study investigates the frequency and contextual meaning of these nouns using collocation analysis. The analysis encompasses four distinct eras spanning from 1958 to 2019: Guided Democracy, New Order, Transition to Democracy, and Reform. The findings reveal significant shifts in the frequency of these nouns over time. Notably, the usage of the term wanoja has experienced a remarkable increase throughout the examined period, while the occurrences of pamajikan and mojang have undergone a rapid decline. The collocation analysis suggests that women in the Sundanese corpus were initially depicted as dependent individuals, predominantly associated with their traditional roles. However, as the eras progressed, the representation of women evolved, portraying them as increasingly independent and actively engaged in the public sphere. The examination of women's representation in the Manglé corpus offers valuable insights into how women are constructed through lexical choices. It highlights the dynamic nature of female representation, challenging stereotypical gender roles

Abstract

Gender identity, one of the most important social categories in people’s lives, is socially constructed, and language is claimed to have a significant role in constructing the gender identity. This paper studies the construction of Sundanese women through five Sundanese nouns referring to women found in the corpus of Manglè magazine, published between 1958–2013. The research employs a mixed-method design in which quantitative analysis is combined with qualitative analysis to investigate how the nouns referring to women are used to construct Sundanese women from the periods of Guided Democracy (1958–1965) to Reform Era (2004–2013). The quantitative analysis is used to examine the frequency of word occurrence diachronically. The frequency of word occurrence is subsequently interpreted qualitatively by considering social and cultural contexts, such as the norms of speech levels in Sundanese, Sundanese belief about marriage, and gender issues. The result of analysis shows that women are constructed in various identities by every noun referring to them. The lexical choices used to construct women are greatly influenced by the social and cultural contexts.

Abstract

Amidst the debates over the most appropriate Indonesian term for ‘woman’, the present research examines the use of the gendered terms perempuan and wanita. The aim of this research is to reveal which term is more preferable and how the terms are used to talk about women. Using corpus-based approach, this study compared the frequency and pattern of word usage of perempuan and wanita obtained from two corpora, namely IndonesianWac and ind_mixed_2013. The research used a mixed-method design in which quantitative analysis was used to identify word frequency and to measure significant collocation, while qualitative analysis was used to determine meanings on the basis of semantic preference. The study reveals that the term wanita tends to be more frequently used than the term perempuan to signify ‘woman’. In terms of meaning, both terms are used to talk about women in relation to their body (especially their reproductive functions), other people (particularly men), family, and age. The difference is that perempuan tends to be used to talk about women in relation to gender equality and organization, while wanita tends to focus on women’s sexual relationship. Furthermore, results strongly indicate that perempuan tends to denote women in relation to their roles in public domain, whereas wanita tends to denote women in relation to their roles in domestic domain.
