Abstract

This historical research examines the messages conveyed through the architectural art of an ancient mosque, the Cirebon Panjunan Red Mosque, which was built by Arab descendants living in Java in 1480 AD. In Indonesia, the acculturation between Islamic culture and traditional values resulted in the uniqueness of mosques' architectural buildings and ornaments. In addition to being a place of worship, mosques became an art form rich in symbols, representing historical, religious, and philosophical values. This qualitative research with historical methods seeks to investigate the visual narrative in the ancient mosque by implementing a series of historical research stages, including heuristics, criticism, and data interpretation. As pictures convey a narrative as well as words, visual narrative can be used to discover the values of the past. The results of the research have unveiled messages of history and culture regarding Islam's development during the Cirebon sultanate. In addition, the history of the Panjunan Red Mosque was described. Hopefully, this research can contribute to new knowledge on the past Islamic development in Indonesia and the wisdom of peaceful acculturation.

Abstract

The 2020 US presidential debate was a democratic practice held every four years. In the debate, each debater used turn taking strategies. This research focuses on the uses of turn taking strategies and their types dominantly produced by the debaters in the debate. The strategies encompass taking, holding, and yielding the turn. Elaborating the strategy in depth is the aim of this research. Qualitative conversation analysis technique using turn-by-turn consideration was the used method. The utterances of the debaters were the data. The data source was a self-made transcription based on the video recording of the debate. Overlapping, interruption, repair, and other debater selection often occur in the debate through those strategies. Consequently, TRP frequently cannot be reached, and the usage of these strategies affects turn allocation. The results show that turn taking strategies were applied in the debate. Trump used taking the turn and yielding the turn as strategies. Meanwhile, Biden used holding the turn as his strategy. For future research, discussions on turn-taking subcategories in the scope of political debates and conversation analysis are expected to be conducted more.

Abstract

Corpus linguistics allows researchers to discover the nature of language use through lexical bundles throughout genres, registers, and language varieties. With the fast-changing development of the internet, the language of websites has become one fascinating variety to investigate. In the contexts of German language studies, Goethe-Institut is a worldwide German cultural institution dedicated to teaching German and propagating German culture, with its website becoming a well-known source for German-related studies. Under these considerations, this research is interested in analyzing the German language patterns in Goethe-Institut website by examining their frequency and structure of lexical bundles. Using a mixed-method approach, the corpus was found to be dominated by lexical bundles within the ranges of three- and four-bundles, with the least quantity of lexical bundles in the range of five. The majority of the four-word lexical bundles on this site fell into the categories of noun, preposition, or verb groups. Meanwhile, the adverb, conjunction, and adjective groups were the fewest to appear in the four-word lexical bundles. The language in the Goethe-Institut was shown to contain semi-formal expressions according to the frequency of use of the prepositions, nouns, verbs, and the active sentence expressions. The utilization of standardized German language and basic vocabulary indicates that this website is designed to be accessible for everyone, including German language learners. The language usage also demonstrates that the Goethe-Institut is especially a user-oriented website with expressions that evoke a "˜sense of belonging'.

Abstract

Corpus linguistics has given a significant impact to various kinds of research which studies language, including translation studies. The impact of corpus linguistics to the development of translation studies is marked by the availability of corpora that allow us to study translation as empirical phenomenon and the emergence of corpus-based translation studies. The present paper explores several key concepts in corpus-based translation studies, resulted from the marriage of corpus linguistics and descriptive translation studies. Techniques and methods developed by corpus linguistics are thought to have the capability of extending the scope of translation research and introduce new pattern of thought for translation researchers. For that reason, the present paper discusses the paradigm shifts in translation studies; types of corpora and corpus analysis techniques applied for translation studies; and the development of corpus-based translation studies. The paper is expected to inspire experts in the fields of translation studies as well as corpus linguistics, particularly in Indonesia, to collaborate in developing corpus-based translation studies, which hitherto apparently has not been explored yet. Keywords: corpus linguistics, translation studies, corpus-based translation studies, descriptive translation studies.

Abstract

In this paper, I examine the evolving portrayal of women in Sundanese society through a close analysis of certain nouns denoting women in the magazine Manglé. Using corpus linguistics, specifically word frequency and collocation analyses, I aim to investigate the evolving images of Sundanese women in relation to Indonesia’s political context over time. I argue that the evolution shown can be seen as a detailed overview of how the images of Sundanese women have been transformed. The results indicate that the trend in constructing women’s images is predominantly through the use of the noun wanoja, in contrast to other nouns. Through this noun, women are increasingly portrayed as possessing greater confidence to engage in the public sphere. In addition to spotlighting Sundanese women’s discussion, this paper can also serve as a representative case of how corpus linguistics research can be applied to other Sundanese texts or other regional texts in Indonesia.

Abstract

Drawing on the appraisal theory framework developed by Martin and White (2005), this study examines Tempo's attitudinal stance.co toward the Free Nutritious Meals Program (Program Makan Bergizi Gratis) implemented by the Indonesian government in 2025. The results show that a total of 63 attitudinal resources were identified, with appreciation being the most frequent (43%), followed by judgement (40%) and affect (17%). Negative attitudes account for 74% of the data, indicating a predominantly negative stance. These criticisms are explicitly conveyed and focus on operational issues such as food quality, safety concerns, limited menu variation, unequal distribution, and perceived weaknesses in government management. Positive attitudes (26%) are less frequent and focus mainly on the program’s intended goals, such as improving children’s nutrition and supporting local food industries, rather than its actual implementation. These findings indicate that Tempo.co tends to adopt a negative stance toward the program’s implementation, primarily expressed through explicit evaluations of its shortcomings, while offering limited recognition to its broader policy objectives
